Ronstadt, Linda - My Funny Valentine Lyrics

Behold the way our fine feathered friend
His virtue doth parade
Thou knowest not my dim-witted friend
The picture thou hast made
Thy vacant brow and thy tousled hair
Conceal thy good intent
Thou noble, upright, truthful, sincere
And slightly dopey gent

You're my funny valentine
Sweet comic valentine
You make me smile with my heart
Your looks are laughable
Unphotographable
Still you're my favorite work of art

Is your figure less than Greek
Is your mouth a little weak
When you open it to speak
Are you smart

Don't change a hair for me
Not if you care for me
Stay, little valentine, stay
Each day is Valentine's Day

Ronstadt, Linda My Funny Valentine Comments
  1. F.... W....

I have always loved this song, but being a rock musician, I wasn't familiar with 'classic' versions of it. Tonight I listened to many different interpretations, and Linda Ronstadt blew me away. As another commenter noted, she worked her way into the song, rather than starting with the chorus. And her voice was just incredible on this!

  2. e.... ....

Maybe the first and only Nelson Riddle chart I didn't like. I think he's trying too hard to do something original with this immensely overperformed song but the results is a dry and boring arrangement, in my opinion...too bad for Linda...

  3. V.... L....

I grew up with your music and this song touches my heart!

  4. M.... V....

So beautiful one of my favorite

  5. r.... ....

This was Johnny Carson's favorite song. He has been gone just over 12 years already.  RIP.  He was also a great Ronstadt fan.

  6. m.... ....

I've listened to all the other versions and this is definitely the best.

    m.... ....

    masterlongtube i agree! 😄

  7. R.... C....

Warm and gorgeous. Her voice, her being.

  8. C.... M....

Brilliant. She got it just right...so clear and charming.

  9. m.... w....

i like this, but there is a female singer that sings it wonderfully.

  10. B.... R....

Mesmerizing!! I can't get enough of this rendition and the fabulous and exquisite string arrangement and ensemble that the genius Nelson Riddle came up with. I Don't get tired of listening it over and over. Insuperable.

  16. J.... M....

People love this song and Linda she hits all the high notes with ease.

  17. K.... Y....

still, you're my favorite work of art . . .

    don't change a hair for me. . .

for the Prince of my Heart . . .

  18. J.... B....

    From a 72yo Aussie fan.

  19. A.... S....

I like most songs she sings...

  20. K.... W....

    Gorgeous voice. So sweet.

  21. k.... s....

what a beautiful clear voice singing country or classics

  22. I.... M....

Love Linda Ronstadt.. What a voice & gift.. I'm going to miss her singing. I hope she gets better.

  23. G.... B....

    And fade to jelly...........

Gorgeous. So many contemporary singers who try to sing the standards bore me to tears. They are often overwhelmed by the orchestra or simply don't have the warmth, sadness and vocal beauty of Ronstadt. You can hear her ranchera heritage, a bit of her country rock belt and her pure joy of singing with a superb conductor, arranger and musicians. They create an envelope of musical compliments to her notes. She is visually and vocally something from a dream.

    g.... d....

+gogo delux your so right . shes the best , in every way

    g.... d....

Yes, she was a beautiful blending of genres and the ability to infuse great emotion into each song. Many female vocalists today can sing the notes, but the emotion is almost dead. You can hear the depth of her being in each note.

    g.... d....

Or they think they have to do something to make it different, and end up with different but not better. Some might say this one is boring, but I like it just the way it is; don't change a hair for me :-)

    g.... d....

Linda Ronstadt will always live in my memory as being the epitome of a professional Singer. Those who have not experienced her do not understand how high she actually set the bar.

  25. y.... ....

    Te adoro Linda la linda.
What a pity we didn't met some forty years ago. :)

  26. P.... C....

BOINK BOINK BA BABA  THUMP THRA BUMP THUMP DE DOM !!!!!!!!

  27. J.... M....

What a wonderful voice, one of my all time favourite singers xx

  28. n.... k....

    リンダのヴァース入りの「マイ・ファニー・バレンタイン」初めて聞きました。なんと力強い歌唱、小雨上がりの小さなバーから流れ出るこのメロディーのイメージが吹き飛んでしまいました。

  29. C.... C....

    Brilliant.

  30. S.... ....

Great intro of this classic American standard. Melancholy, soft and gentle, her
interpretative lyrics and holding those notes makes this a special performance
    by Linda.

  31. G.... T....

I feel so badly that she is so ill..... such a versatile singer for so many decades.

  32. E.... A....

    She does a WONDERFUL rendition!

  33. d.... ....

Question...does Linda not get this song to Heaven and back...twice?

  34. T.... ....

    Amazing.

  35. r.... b....

    great song !good ainger!!

  36. c.... ....

Not my favorite song of Linda's, but her beautiful voice can make even a bad song sound incredible. What an absolutely gorgeous woman she is! Will you be MY Valentine, Linda?

  37. M.... D....

I have all of her original recordings with Nelson Riddle on VINYL oh yeah ;-)

  38. c.... ....

I have heard it, and I like it, too. There are several great versions, I was just in a Linda mood when I posted this. Love her. Thanks for the info; I will listen again.
    C.

  39. s.... ....

Thank you for this upload! I've always loved Linda, and this is actually one of my favorite songs. Most versions don't include the intro like hers does; it was nice to hear that. BTW, have you ever heard Elvis Costello's version? I know I've listened to it on YT before in case you want to check it out.

  40. M.... P....

This song goes to my late father Atty George B. Gallos on his 79th birth anniversary on February 27, 2012 Philippine time. "Your looks are laughable, unphotographable. Still you're my favorite work of art."

  41. c.... ....

    @DeadEyeRabbit
    Thank you.
    C

  42. R.... ....

not crazy about the song, but her voice is pure ecstasy. so i had to "like" it.

  43. d.... ....

Her voice sounds like a musical instrument - simply amazing.

  44. c.... ....

    @zaxapitsa5
Thank you. One of mine, too.
    C.

  45. Z.... C....

i was looking for the best version of this song. ok, I just found it.

  46. r.... ....

Absolutely have loved Linda for over 40 yearsbut find her a bit strident here. Try Friederike Alexander's version, which also opens with the rarely heard verse.

  47. c.... ....

    @Hermeterec
Just mentioning Johnny Mathis makes my heart throb! I will try and see if they will take some uploads of him. All my old vinyls of him are about worn out. Thanks for reminding me. C.

  48. J.... S....

from Jose' Sepulveda, the Hermeterec.....dear nieson0727.....with all due respect, I fear that I must respectfully demur. Linda's rendering of this time-honored classic from Rodgers and Hart is wonderful, without a doubt, but the definitive (hate hearing that word all the time) version does now and must always belong to the great Johnny Mathis! I know....its all subjective, but that is my opinion.

  49. s.... ....

that was the most perfect note at 2:33

  50. s.... ....

that was the most perfect note at 2:07

  51. m.... ....

If you enjoyed this arrangement for string quartet that Nelson Riddle did for Linda Ronstadt, be sure to check out the album 'Close to You' by Frank Sinatra. All selections are based on string quartet with various solo instruments highlighted on each song. It's the ultimate in understatement, and a great album of Sinatra's that is frequently overlooked.

  52. M.... J....

    the best version for me

  53. a.... s....

    Tucson's very own.

  54. S.... ....

Linda's Beautiful & Damn Talented too

  55. g.... ....

i like this version a lot.

  56. c.... ....

And God bless Linda for singing it! Happy Valentines day to you and your family! C.

  57. c.... ....

    @jtdendy
You are more than welcome. Thanks for stopping by.
    C.

  58. g.... ....

    Wonderful!!! Just wordenfull....no more words.

  59. S.... Y....

The most poignant version of this song ever recorded.

  60. J.... G....

Linda is absolutely the best. Has she recorded anything lately? Those were the "daze" and I miss them......

  61. D.... R....

The whole series of Nelson Riddle recordings - this is the music Linda was born to sing.

  62. L.... R....

Thank you so much for uploading this beautiful ballad. I would have given anything to see a live version where Linda sings this under the watchful eye of Nelson Riddle. This and 'But Not For Me' and 'Little Girl Blue' from their last (studio) album together 'For Sentimental Reasons' :)

  63. G.... M....

i love how she sings it

  64. M.... W....

Wow! Amazing voice and Nelson was the finest at his craft with Gordon Jenkins

  65. c.... ....

You are more than welcome, nieson, Thank you for the comment. C.

  66. n.... ....

Without doubt the best recording of this song - in my humble opinion.

Thank you lots and lots for uploading it!

  67. c.... ....

I am so glad you enjoyed it. I love the intro's also, and so often they are left behind. This always makes me think of my sweetie...don't change a hair for me...he has no hair. And each day is valentines day.

  68. g.... ....

Love it when Linda sings the intro verse to the standards she sang with Nelson Riddle! Too bad more singers don't sing the complete song. The intro verse sets the mood for the song by telling the beginning of the song's "story." This is such a great song! Always makes me think of my son who was born on February 14. Thanks for the great post!

  69. c.... ....

I will look for Linda's Blue Bayou. ..I know I have it. I have played Roy Orbison's more often, though I love them both. Thanks for the reminder, John

  70. J.... D....

Hi Claudia. I first saw Linda perform her magic on 1966's Kraft Music Hall, hosted by a youthful John Davidson (an under-appreciated voice), a summer replacement for Perry Como. It would be great if you could upload her "Blue Bayou", if it already isn't out there. Nelson Riddle's arrangement for this number is unique for his style, but appropriately beautiful. I'm glad Linda appreciated her father's taste in music. Amicably, John
