Ronstadt, Linda - Down So Low Lyrics

When you went away I cried
Cried for so long
And I wanted you to stay
Ah but that was all wrong

The pain you left behind
Has become part of me
And it's burned out a hole
Where my love used to be

But it's not losing you
That's got me down so low
I just can't find another man
To take your place

Well you know I love you
But that wasn't enough
We both fell apart
When things got too tough
And I've learned how to give now
But what good
But what good would that do
No one can touch me
The way you used to do

And it's not losing you
That's got me down so low
I just can't find another man
To take your place

Well I know your opinion
Of me is not good
Please try to understand
That I'd change
Well I'd change if I could
And this coldness inside me
Well it's starting to build
And a woman can't be a woman
Unless she's fulfilled

But it's not losing you
That's got me down so low
I just can't find another man
To take your place
There's no one can

Ronstadt, Linda Down So Low Comments
  1. J.... S....

I love how it just goes dark so she doesn't have to smile and thank audience but just relax for a minute to bathe in the breathtaking beauty of what she's just executed!!!! (and audience can compose itself too).

  2. S.... ....

    The Queen 👑🙌🏾

  3. j.... s....

    Another beautiful version.

Ms. Ronstadt is a glorious blues singer. She's a glorious singer. She's a singer's singer.

  7. D.... ....

ditto.... below.. ditto.. I have no better words.. she sings them all... sublime.. she just has to think of a note and she hits it.... sublime....thank you .. love you linda

  8. F.... S....

She said in one of her interviews that with each song she had a picture of someone in her mind that she could relate to. She must have had some serious heartbreaks in he life to sing this song with so much intensity and conviction. she never married, but as far as I know she kept her heartaches private. We could only understand or experience it in her near perfect performances. Priceless.

  9. J.... S....

if a desert flower could sing.....

  10. M.... A....

Linda Ronstadt....the most incredible voice of all time!!!

  11. E.... S....

Who can beat this voice? Such emotion, such power. 💥🎶⚡

  13. B.... D....

Did anyone catch the little run at about 1:07? If memory serves that wasn't present on studio version.

    B.... D....

I thought her voice was gonna knock the Hair lean off Waddy Wachtels head

    B.... D....

Oh yeah, he was definitely into it!
Did you catch his foot stomp?

  14. G.... C....

To hear the TRUE SOUL of this song, listen to woman who wrote it and SANG IT FIRST.TRACY NELSON. THIS IS SHITE

    G.... C....

At least he didnt make a snarky Trump comment

  15. E.... A....

The greatest female vocalist of all time. This is almost non-existent in today's music.

  16. R.... A....

    Stunning -

  17. D.... R....

Spectacular! However, this video is just begging to be color corrected, enhanced and restored. A shame no one takes on the project to document and archive this artist.

  18. S.... K....

Linda is a master at phrasing. She knows how to deliver. It's in her genes. And of course she sings from the heart.

  19. A.... ....

This electrifying performance proves (to me) that Linda could have had easily added the blues to the list of musical genres she conquered. As far as I have heard, this is as close as she came, but it was clearly there for her if she had wanted it. I think she tended to avoid songs and genres she didn't feel a very solid bond with stemming back to her childhood. This was the profound artistic integrity that shaped her career and for which she was well known.

  20. c.... o....

very pretty , well done , she is good ,but i just love ETTA JAMES version the best ,RIP MISS ETTA

  21. p.... S....

Linda is singing with such wrenching ache and beauty, and understand that she is ruining her voice while she's doing it -- her manager, Peter Asher insisted she sing in a lower register than is natural for her. She's naturally a high clear soprano, and this is pitched much lower That's what an artist she is ... giving everything she has and more.

    Oh. My. God.

  24. A.... C....

    If you don't feel this, you're numb inside...or a Trumphead!😁

  25. O.... S....

Linda live and layin' it down. Electrifying. Her critics should be banished.

    O.... S....

    Her critics don't matter.

  26. L.... K....

    <3 <3 <3

  27. H.... H....

These moments from Linda in the seventies are so stunning. Emotional music up there with the greatest sounds ever made by a popular singer. No one came close then and certainly no one even tries now. Just surrender.

  28. Z.... ....

Wish she would have performed this more often.

    Z.... ....

She said that song "gave me a rash."

  29. R.... R....

    Cyndi já cantou essa canção?

    R.... R....

Yeah. A lot of women singers have tackled it.

  30. F.... M....

    Yep that's the BLUES

  31. J.... W....

I wss speechless when I heard this live as a teenager- and now - deeply believe Linda's live version is as stuning a vocal performance as ever ben performance.

  32. J.... C....

The goose bumps at about 3:00 still get to me to this day! What a voice and face!!

  33. j.... a....

wow! talk about the concert of the century! LR is one of my favorite performers and this is just about my favorite song by her. but the funny thing is i actually perfer etta james version of this song. in some ways. but both of them are great!

  34. L.... L....

    killer. a woman exposed.

  35. C.... L....

A great tribute to Tracy Nelson! Linda's rendition is almost up to Tracy's (and that saying something)

    C.... L....

    definitely above Tracy's.

    C.... L....

Definitely... no greater version than this.

    C.... L....

The difference is that Linda is not really a blues singer. She sings it more sweet than tough. At that point, it really does become a matter of taste. But Tracy's take is that of a strong woman with a certain ironic distance from the sentiment of the lyric. By the way, Linda's take is more closely related to the Mother Earth (Tracy's original band) from 1968 than the live performance from 1987, which was considerably more torchy. I actually do prefer the very earliest version with Mother Earth (from the album LIVING WITH THE ANIMALS). It is a bit more understated that the concert take.

  36. H.... C....

Words are not enough to describe her emotional connection to the music. What PURE singing is.

  37. o.... r....

Happy 70the birthday Lovely Linda Ronstadt. You're in our prayers. I miss your singing so much.

  38. H.... N....

Gorgeous and achingly sad voice. Beautiful woman and beautiful soul.

  39. F.... A....

She sings from deep down within herself. We are grateful she let us listen in.

  40. D.... S....

I think this live version is even better than the one on the album. Sounds better without the choir that the album had. It is tremendously powerful, and my fave of ALL of her songs!

    D.... S....

I feel the same. She is truly great.

  41. M.... H....

Goosebumps every single time I hear this.

  42. I.... J....

This is one of my favorite albums by her or anyone. Where each and every song is amazing!

    I.... J....

+Laura James I agree completely. Linda is amazing.

  43. C.... C....

An emotional surrender. This is something wonderful and rarely delivered with so much intensity. Linda Ronstadt at. her killer finest.

    C.... C....

    Clark Clark agree to that

  44. h.... ....

Whenever I hear this, I know that there is no other vocal that is a gut wrenching and powerful as this is. Nothing else comes close. The performance of a lifetime. And she knew it while she was signing it.

    h.... ....

+hotajax It is truly a remarkable performance.

    h.... ....

hotajax, I couldn't agree more. She's still far and away the single greatest female vocalist of all time. But it's so much more than simply having the greatest voice and skill, with her it's the raw emotional soul energy that's pouring out of her. You can tell that she means and feels every word she sings, that it's coming from her soul. As exemplified in this soul-stirring, otherworldly performance, her singing is transcendant, almost spiritual. The highest form of art which seems to sum up all at once the vastness yet the fragility of the human soul and the human experience in this world, the whole range of the deepest human emotions; love, fear, hope, despair, etc...

    h.... ....

Performance of a lifetime. No doubt.

    h.... ....

Kris Beal: Maybe the performance of a lifetime for someone else. For Linda, it was just another day's work. She was this good all the time. And nobody else came close.

    h.... ....

Song written by Tracy Nelson. Her original performance of this song, written after a break up with musician Steve Miller, is equally as powerful as Linda's cover.

  45. m.... ....

    The best.

  46. m.... m....

This shows how great Linda is.

  47. z.... b....

As emotional avalanche. No note, no gesture is prepared or assumed. Linda delivers pure authentic pain and sorrow in an amazing live performance. Thanking someone out there that this was preserved. Among the finest video captures of a female vocalist, singing her heart out, ever.

    z.... b....

@zane blast I like your interpretation. There was no ability to fake it in those days. saludos

    z.... b....

@gruntball Yes...agree....how versatile and pure the sound of her voice was. I only wish she was still singing today!! I have idolized her since my teens!  I read her interesting book Simple Dreams last year and I was so entertained and learned a lot about other groups too, like the Eagles. Didn't know she got them started.  I think Hasten Down the Wind was my favorite album.

    z.... b....

    No one like Linda, ever!❤️

    z.... b....

@zane blast ..a beautiful description but applies to DeeDee’s version..Linda is darn good but...

  48. i.... ....

    Powerful stuff.

  49. z.... b....

Linda darling you are vocally and visually stunning.

    z.... b....

    Agreed!

  50. L.... F....

    W O W !!!! ❤️〰

  51. d.... ....

    Linda, guapa!

  52. k.... m....

    awesome

  53. t.... ....

Almost as good as the original, Tracy Nelson version.

    t.... ....

+nemorable1 I've heard Tracy Nelson's live version of this and I don't think it is superior to Linda's. To each his own.

    t.... ....

+Christopher Jones You do realize this is just Ronstadt's "version" of Tracy Nelson's song, don't you? She does a nice job, but it ain't the original.

    t.... ....

Tracy's original version doesn't have the emotion or depth that this live version by Linda does. Tracy over sings it but even so her version is also enjoyable.

    t.... ....

Well, technically, this is Linda's "version" whereas it is Tracy's song. Everybody has their opinion and I certainly would say Linda sings Tracy's song very well, even if it sounds a little thin to me. She probably made Tracy Nelson a few bucks as well. Win win.

    t.... ....

@tomr Yep, you're right.  It may seem as though I'm trying to stand on both sides of the fence, but I like both versions.  Linda Ronstadt is one of my "go to" singers when I need a lift or some comfort music.  So sad that Parkinson's has stolen her voice.  Hate that for her.

  54. R.... G....

One of the greatest performances ever!!

  55. p.... ....

    Beautiful!

  56. J.... A....

Tracy Nelson sings this Amazingly but when Linda sings it She put it down & It stayed down...

    J.... A....

What does Cold Blood have to do with anything. Are you confusing Tracy Nelson with Lydia Pense?

    J.... A....

A lot of people confuse Tracy's original recording (with her band Mother Earth) with subsequent live versions that appeared on video (and on a live album as well). To my mind the '68 version is definitive, and while I'm not expecting you to change your mind necessarily about its "paling in comparison" to Linda's, I would recommend that you listen to that one (which is also available on YouTube) to get an understanding of why Nelson's fans champion that version. The fact that Linda's version is patterned on the '68 original is not a bad thing at all: it's just something to be noted. If you're curious, you can search it under the terms "down so low" and "mother earth."

  57. c.... n....

Thank you!Thank you! Linda for ur gorgeous voice all these years!

  58. D.... D....

Ridiculous. A tough song in a studio. Live on stage? Crazy good.

    D.... D....

    +Deb Della Piana Absolutely.

  59. u.... ....

This is one of the hardest songs for even the best singers to handle.  Ronstadt's legendary pipes demonstrate how a heart breaks with a deafening sound, and her version of "Down So Low" stands nicely beside the magnificent Tracy Nelson's.  Our Linda may never sing again, but we've been lucky to have had her for a few decades.

    u.... ....

how the heart breaks with a deafening sound....what a perfect statement!

    u.... ....

Luck for us, and unbelievably hard work by Linda to perfect her craft.

  60. N.... G....

Oh God PLEASE bring this woman's voice back to us  we love and miss it so much Awesome job Linda

  61. N.... P....

Still gives me chills after almost 40 years. One of the greatest of all time now fighting the battle of her life. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers.

  62. S.... i....

Toss up....I love both songwriter Tracy Nelson's original version & Ms Ronstadt's.

  63. j.... ....

    Perfect!

  64. F.... F....

Her musicality is absolutely second to none. Breathtaking.

  65. D.... ....

Linda is the only one that captures my heart !

  66. D.... ....

    no argument

  67. n.... ....

Sinatra was right, It comes down to pipes, phrasing, dark stage , and a blue spot light.

  68. s.... ....

    My God, what a voice.

  69. W.... B....

I Wonder everyday how can such a perfect person been taken away from us one day. We need more of these artist, to keep us humble

  70. D.... O....

Class act! Always will be! She gonna kick some Parkinson's ass!!! Fight hard Linda!

  71. g.... c....

    gives me chills WOW !!!!

  72. T.... E....

Linda, There has NEVER been anyone remotely close to you. God Speed in your current medical fight. If the love and strength from your fans gives you any comfort then you will be peaceful in you quest. We love you.

  73. r.... ....

Un-be-effing-lievable. I would have gone gay for her then.

  74. G.... D....

so beautiful and I am so sad.

  75. J.... ....

She informed a generation of listeners and singers alike. This is how it's done. Heart and soul.

  76. D.... O....

One hell of a singer! PERIOD!!!!!

  77. S.... F....

Linda HAS it all, her voice is my drug

  78. K.... N....

    Incredible performance.

  79. u.... m....

I so agree. I have tried to introduce her to colleagues but I guess time moves on. To me the Carrie Underwoods ("I want this song to show off my PERSONALITY"), Rhiannas, Beyonces, Taylor Swifts are not a patch on her. Her vocal range is stunning. She could sing anything and chose so well. With her, for the first time in a life-time I got the lyrics of "Tumbling Dice" and "Willing" who knew a little girl could sing a trucker's song with such power. She had it all.

  80. D.... J....

I think Linda Ronstadt is one of the best singers period. Her control, her choices of dynamics, interpretive choices, etc. I just don't hear in many singers. Today's singers seem to think great singing is just doing really long runs that interrupt the flow of a song. For my tastes, the current fashion of run after run is hard on my ears.

I never understood why Ms. Ronstadt wasn't more popular than she was, especially compared to the modern "runners" like Carey, Houston, etc.

  81. c.... ....

Give a listen to the original version (pre-Linda)
    Tracy Nelson - Mother Earth

Two versions of an amazingly beautiful song.

  82. r.... ....

    Wow. Just...wow.

  83. J.... S....

not a great big hit for her, but I feel, is one of her very best songs and performances....the voice comes through!

  84. T.... ....

    My favourite song ~

  85. G.... C....

An amazing talent. Thank you for the years, Linda!

  86. A.... C....

what this is - is a master class in how to blow the walls out of an arena... tube amps and all

  87. r.... ....

this Germany concert was her best performance ever

  88. h.... ....

Trying to describe how awesome this video is a waste of time. What a powerful voice!

  89. l.... b....

Duh Tracy wrote the song and sang her version - Linda pays homage.

  90. R.... M....

Linda does a beautiful rendition on this song written (and sung by) Tracy Nelson; kudos to both!

  91. E.... D....

I seriously I hope I can find this at karaoke!

  92. r.... ....

@GregorVonKallahan sorry man but I have no patience for idiots that go to the youtube performance of one performer like Linda just to cut her down to promote their personal favorite in Linda's comments section where you will find Linda's true fans. What kind of people do that and what else would you expect a fan to do but respond? Who then is the real idiot? Keep your comments to yourself or go to Tracy's and proclaim how wonderful she is there. Don't like it? Tough.

  93. r.... ....

@97448able Ronstadt's version is a refreshing change to Nelson's monotone version is all I am saying. She may have resonance, depth and soul but there is no range there. Nice try.

  94. r.... ....

@97448able Tracy's version is good and she has a decent voice but she belabors a note which can be a bit irritating. One could argue that she wrote the song and can sing it anyway she wants (which is true) but on this song I think Linda does a better job. Total shame the two didn't collaborate on more songs than Rock Salt and Nails. They sound so good together.

  95. A.... N....

Brings back great memories. My wife and I were at this concert in October 1976 when I was stationed in Germany.
