I get why she changed the line to “I pawned my Smith and Wesson” (gun), that’s more her style, but I LOVE Zevon’s original line: “…Smith Corona” (typewriter) He always had a way of drawing the banal everyday elements up into something impactful. To think of this guy so down and out that he is trading his typewriter (a symbol of self-expression) for a fix, is HEARTBREAKING.

I agree. The typewriter is much more powerful than the gun, in this line. I think that Zevon himself sang live sometimes "Smith Corona" and sometimes "Smith and Wesson", though.

This was always my favourite Linda Ronstadt song. In the 70s I did not know English well enough to really get the lyrics. But what a singer she was, and always with such good taste in the songs she picked.

"Carmelita" was the name of a cousin.  I was attracted to the song because of that. Can't get it off my mind after all these years.  Warren Zevon's lyrics and Linda's marvelous interpretation are so evocative.

my wife and i ran off to mexico, one step ahead of the cops. we used to shower together and she would beg me to sing songs. i used to sing this one to her and stamp my foot when i got to "the county won't give me no more methadone and they cut off your welfare check at 2:10" later when we got back to florida i was playing this record for her, and when we got to 2:10 her face lit up!

we had been coworkers, and she had told me she was 19 years old. later on i found out she was 16. i had already started an affair with her, and was crazy about her...couldn't stop. she ran away from home, and her mother found out about us and sicced the cops on me. they were doing an investigation, and vowed if they found evidence that i had had sex with her they would lock me up. i had already done a 12 year stretch in prison, and wasn't looking forward to going back. one night she called me and suggested we run off to mexico because no one there would care how old she was. she was dead right. after 5 months we ran out of money, and with the last of our cash got bus tickets back to florida. we stayed in key west with my ex wife. one day an old friend of hers spotted her. knowing it was a matter of time before the police came to get me, we got married. that was in 1987, and we lived happily ever after

When this album first came out I saw the poster with this picture on it in the window of a record store. I went in and told them I wanted that poster when they took it out of the window. The next time I was there the poster was not in the window so I went in to get my poster and a different person was behind the counter and she said the boss was saving it for a guy who's a huge Linda fan. I said "that's me" and I got the poster.
I've been a fan since I heard her with the Stone Pony's and still am.

The next summer, saw the Eagles front for Procal Harem. PH were very good, the Eagles stole the night. Oh, and Linda was never better than that night in '71. Mostly her, but what a backup band!

Yeah, I have to agree with most here. Linda really made me FEEL this song when I first heard it probably in 1978-79. But I have a version in which she "feels into it" even more.

Just how the hell are the emotions in this version more authentic than the original with Zevon? It's a good version but sorry the despair of the protagonist is much more obvious in the WZ version. There's just no question about it.
