Ronnie Milsap - Sancitified Lyrics

My mama told me when I was a baby child
I don't want you on the street at night out runnin' wild
For the people of the night can turn your hip side
And lead you from the fold of the sanctified

Sanctified in soul and spirit
Sanctified within your mind
You'll find light within the darkness if you're livin'
Sanctified (Sanctified)

Without my really knowin' time just slipped away
And the wages of my life left me with debts to pay
For I found that you must have loved to keep you satisfied
But the love I found was not the kind that sanctified

Sanctified in soul and spirit
Sanctified within your mind
You'll find light within the darkness if you're livin'
Sanctified (Sanctified)

Now it's many years I've wandered since I left my home
And it's many roads I've traveled lost and all alone
But I find that the way I've taken is just a one way ride
And the sinners of the world are never sanctified

Sanctified in soul and spirit
Sanctified within your mind
You'll find light within the darkness if you're livin'
Sanctified (Sanctified)

Sanctified in soul and spirit
Sanctified within your mind
You'll find light within the darkness if you're livin'
Sanctified (Sanctified)

(Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified)
Whooooaaaa, sanctified
(Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified)
Whooooaaaa, sanctified
(Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified)
Whooooaaaa, sanctified
(Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified)
Whooooaaaa, sanctified
(Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified) (Sanctified)

I finally got it just recently and read it; I was SHOCKED when I found out that Ronnie not only smoked and drank, but started doing one and/or the other at 12! (Thankfully, he only drank significantly twice in his life, and if I recall correctly, wrote about not smoking anymore.) I still think that, except MAYBE the belter notes at the end, this might have fit on one of Charlie's albums. (In the same book, Ronnie mentioned Charlie, but only for a few paragraphs.)

Thanks for posting, Ronnie's my favorite .

@CharlieAndRonnie (Cont.) Guess what 2 of his favorite kinds of music turned out to be. He also wound up smoking and drinking, also sinful. Later on, he wound up suffering from his own fame circa 1973-76. He drank more and more. All the while, he regretted not being the Christian he was expected to be. Sad story if you think about it. As for Ronnie, I have no idea whether or not he used drugs in his life; not from what I know. It's likely not said in his book, but I may find out when I can read.

Wow. I've just listened to this multiple times just now, and I'm starting to hear Charlie Rich in the lyrics. (This will take 2 or 3 comments.) As you probably know, my 2 favorite artists are Ronnie (Milsap) and Charlie Rich. I'm pretty aware of their respective childhoods and personal lives. In case you don't know and are interested to, Charlie was raised a Baptist (his parents were in a gospel quartet), but he was "brought up to believe that jazz, blues and dancing were sinful." (To be cont.)

I'm not sure if you'd call this a gospel song, but it certainly has the positive message of one. This is another message that should've been more heard of. Ronnie Milsap's powerful vocals, along with the backing vocals of the Black Cherries and the organ in the middle of the song, add to it! I have the self-titled debut on CD, and this is a definite highlight! Thanks for posting this and many others, dbelleburr!
