Ronettes, The - Is This What I Get For Loving You? Lyrics

There's been a lot of talk around
That you've been seen with a certain party
And now I'm so afraid I'm losing you
Oh baby, don't tell me you don't want my love
I couldn't give it to just anybody
Baby won't you tell me its not true
Don't leave me baby
Don't tell me its over
After I trusted you
And did my best to make you happy
Is this what I get for loving you baby
Is this what I get for loving you baby
There was a night when you held me tight
And you said you'd always love me
You sad you'd never hurt me

What would there be left for me
Its such a cruel world to be alone in
I always needed you to look out for me
And baby I'm gonna miss your loving arms

They're the only arms I feel at home in
Don't you know how lonely I'm gonna be
Don't leave me baby
Don't tell me its over
After I trusted you and did my best to make you happy
Is this what I get for loving you baby
Is this what I get for loving you baby
There was a night when you held me tight
And you said you'd always love me
(And you said you'd never hurt me)
You said you'd never hurt me
(You said you'd never hurt me)

Don't leave me baby
Is this what I get for loving you baby
Is this what I get for loving you baby
There was a night when you held me tight
And you said you'd always love me
You said you'd never hurt me

Can't beat that "wall of sound". Of all the girl groups during this time, "The Ronettes" were the purest definition of this style of performing!!

  27. S.... m....

    Love ronnies voice

  28. T.... T....

I honestly don't know why Hollywood hasn't made a movie about them.

  29. l.... ....

Before she died. Nedra Talley did a Documentary for UK TV called "I'm In A Girl Group" where she, Mary Wilson Of The Supremes, Sister Sledge, Delores "La La" Brooks Of The Crystals as well as UK Girl Groups talked about what their Careers. It was narrarated by Suranne Jones a Former Soap Star.

    l.... ....

Estelle died, but I think Nedra is still alive

  30. M.... K....

Wow...Ronnie is just breathtakingly GORGEOUS!!! What a voice, too!! The greatest ever!

    M.... K....

    No doubt about that.

  42. R.... P....

I guess this is what you got from Loving me nothing, I wasn't the best guy in the world, but I know that no one will Love you as much as I did and still do Sue P. ,you know this is for you RP

  43. J.... T....

    A true class act.

  44. l.... ....

    Lovely Estelle!

    l.... ....

Yes, she was very lovely. Too bad she descended into mental illness  not long after the Ronettes broke up. I read somewhere that they found Estelle living on the streets and they had clean her up to make her presentable for the induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony.

    l.... ....

@JACK ANTHONYYes, heartbreaking. Darlene Love, who knew her back in the day, saw Estelle there--Estelle didn't remember her. She was able to pull herself together enough to give a brief thank you, but wasn't able to perform with the other two. She suffered from mental illness for pretty much the rest of her life, living on the streets at times and telling passersby that she was going to be performing that night in a club with the Ronettes. She died a couple years ago.

  45. P.... J....

We were blessed to have the best music of modern era

    P.... J....

Every generation thinks theirs is the best

    P.... J....

@HamiltonRb I seriously doubt that! Today's generation I'm sure knows their stuff isn't great! I'm glad I grew up in 1960s that music was Awesome!

    P.... J....

David Osterberg I’ve seen my grandsons playlist ( he is 15) and he has over 400 songs and none from our generation, so I think they are pretty happy with their own music. If you look at comments from music in the 60’s etc, it is us that think our music is so great that every generation should automatically like it, and music today is trash. But when I look at comments from the kids music of today, they never even think of our music, never mind calling it trash. Sometimes I wonder who are the insecure adults and who are the kids.

  46. h.... ....

    One of their hidden treasures.

  47. M.... V....

    awesome shocking blue...

  48. e.... k....

THAT SLIGHT HIP ASS TWIST. NOT TOO FAST OR 🐌...JUST ENOUGH TO DRIVE US KIDS AT THE TIME...INSANE

  49. s.... ....

On this day in 1965 {April 27th} the Ronettes featuring Veronica performed "Is This What I Get For Loving You?" on the NBC-TV weekly program 'Hullabaloo!' {the above video is from this episode of the show}...
Just under a month later on May 23rd the song entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart at position #88; the following week it moved to #79, and on it's third and fourth week on the chart it peaked at #75, then it fell off the Top 100...
Between 1963 and 1966 the trio had eight Top 100 records; one made the Top 10, "Be My Baby", it peaked at #2* for 3 weeks in 1963...
    * The three weeks that "Be My Baby" was at #2, the #1 record for those three weeks was "Sugar Shack" by Jimmy Gilmer and the Fireballs...

    s.... ....

Be My Baby should have got to #1 for at least one of those 3 weeks.

  50. s.... ....

Now I know what a fish feels like when it can't take its eyes off that shiny lure, follow it anywhere. Ronnie is mesmerizing.

  51. g.... ....

Everyone loved Ronnie, and she ended up with the psycho jew...

    g.... ....

Jew huh? I thought it was a psycho Irish.

  52. c.... 8....

    This is what performers do....!!!!

  53. M.... ....

Simply can't stand it, and, i admit, not only 'cause of the music, which is classic, amazing Spectacular!

  54. r.... ....

wish i could go back soooooo bad!!!

    r.... ....

Oh man, I know the feeling!!! If only I could.

  55. W.... R....

    Class!
    Just different 'gravy'.
Oh, so they were lip synching?! Yes but Hahaha, Bullshit!
Mother Donna, Ree Hannah(and I love their music) but, blah, blah, blah they all did it.
In an era when there was no PC, smartphone, HD video.
Phil may have been 'on the edge' of insanity, but ,hell...the music with The Ronettes,(and others) will never be eclipsed.

    W.... R....

Very few acts during that era had to be lip synch due to lack of technology. A lot did sing and had the backing tracks playing, while others tv shows went for the full track with no singing to get the best version of the song onto the air. It was never about not being able to sing, it was about not being able to present to best version of the song with limited tech. This evident with "The Loving Spoonfuls, Summer in the City" While the boys did sing and play, there was a backing track going the had the sound FX of the traffic that was found on LP's, records and radio station, but would be hard pressed to reproduce during a television taping. It's funny to see John look at Zol with a shrug and say, "I'm not doing it" while shaking his. And this practice is continued today even though we have advanced and are able to produce a concert quality program. For whatever reasoning.

  56. E.... P....

Let me quote another commenter: God, I love the Ronettes, but I can't take my eyes off of Nedra!!!

    E.... P....

  62. C.... D....

The Ronettes were the best-I loved The best Part Of Breaking Up-However- Ronnie has a unique voice-The Best!

  63. L.... L....

How could she remember all those words? I could never remember all those words.

  64. R.... H....

Their subtle hip shakes are far sexier than anything seen out of today's pop "entertainers", where dressing like whores and pretending to hump the stage often substitute for talent and soul.

    R.... H....

    So true! Amen!!

    R.... H....

Yes. I agree.  Especially those subtle shakes that conclude the song.

    R.... H....

oh gosh yes there music was great and they were sexie and lady like. Now dats there music doesn't sound good and the lady's now days act dirty

    R.... H....

    Not to mention pretending oral.

  65. w.... h....

  66. s.... f....

    spettacolari!!!

  67. s.... h....

    IMMENSE !!!!!!!

  68. M.... D....

One of Ronnie's best performances.  Reason being: she sang live vocal with a recorded background.  I wished all the rock shows in the 60s did it this way.  Thanks for posting.

  69. e.... p....

One of the best music videos on YouTube. Great music, great looks, great performance.

  70. P.... D....

    Beautiful

  71. J.... M....

ned what happen to live performance version I been coming here for so long to listen to that please change it back please and thank you!!!!!! I really would appreciate it!

  72. J.... ....

Great Sleeper of a song. In this vid you can hear the clapping from the girls the echo on that stage was heard even through the sound track, lip syncing here. They could hold there own. I played this 4 times and it never gets old Nedra looks great and so does Ronnies sister.
Ronnie is till rockin' saw her in Hoboken's Washington Ave. Fair a block from Carlo's Bakery a feew years ago.
    Loved them then & now.
    Thanks for the post.

  73. p.... ....

I just cannot express the feelings I get when I see and hear this video. If there were any taste and justice in this world today, this record but be re-released and sell in millions. Grateful thanks for uploading.

  74. P.... D....

    Absolutely perfect pop

  75. d.... ....

I filpped over this song when I first heard it. Sort of an oddity for the Ronettes, with its 'down' theme, something more appropriate for the newly-signed Righteous Bros. All their hits were behind them when this was (barely) released in '65. Too bad this didn't restore them to the Top 40. Terrific nonetheless!

  76. D.... H....

Nedra is so cute! This was back in the day when singers had talent and didn't have to parade around on stage half naked to make up for their lack of talent.

  77. A.... P....

    Best girl group. EVER

    A.... P....

I agree, but only for live performances.  Nedra and Estelle were rarely on the recordings, and when they were you couldn't hear them because Phil Spector had a whole chorus of singers behind them,  completely erasing the distinction of their voices.

  78. n.... b....

    I luv this song

  79. S.... ....

    Great upload! Love them!
