Rolling Stones, The - Memo From Turner Lyrics

Didn't I see you down in San Antone on a hot and dusty night?
We were eating eggs in Sammy's when the black man there drew his knife.
Aw, you drowned that Jew in Rampton as he washed his sleeveless shirt,
You know, that Spanish-speaking gentlemen, the one we all called "Kurt."

Come now, gentleman, I know there's some mistake.
How forgetful I'm becoming, now you fixed your bus'ness straight.

I remember you in Hemlock Road in nineteen fifty-six.
You're a faggy little leather boy with a smaller piece of stick.
You're a lashing, smashing hunk of man;
Your sweat shines sweet and strong.
Your organs working perfectly, but there's a part that's not screwed on.

Weren't you at the Coke convention back on nineteen sixty-five
You're the misbred, grey executive I've seen heavily advertised.
You're the great, gray man whose daughter licks policemen's buttons clean.
You're the man who squats behind the man who works the soft machine.

Come now, gentleman, your love is all I crave.
You'll still be in the circus when I'm laughing, laughing on my grave.

When the old men do the fighting and the young men all look on.
And the young girls eat their mothers meat from tubes of plasticon.
Be wary of these my gentle friends of all the skins you breed.
They have a tasty habit - they eat the hands that bleed.

So remember who you say you are and keep your noses clean.
Boys will be boys and play with toys so be strong with your beast.
Oh Rosie dear, doncha think it's queer, so stop me if you please.
The baby is dead, my lady said, "You gentlemen, why you all work for me?"

Rolling Stones, The Memo From Turner Comments
  1. M.... W....

Jagger raps better than half the so called rappers of today!💋

  2. B.... M....

Great song. Takes me back to the summer of 1987

  3. B.... S....

Mr. Jagger's lyrics are not so woke, but the song scratches an itch, indeed.

  4. b.... m....

This is 100% grade "A" ROCK N ROLL baby!

  5. S.... E....

    Mí remera favorita

  6. S.... E....

    Mí remera favorita

  7. S.... E....

    Mí remera favorita

  8. R.... ....

That is the dirtiest nastiest slide guitar I have ever heard. I feel like I gotta take a shower and have a gin based drink.

  9. O.... C....

    Love this song.

  10. J.... B....

Hand me some Coke and a needle and a spoon! Wow!

  11. J.... B....

I still have to tell you this stuff is over the top! It's like exile on main Street but much darker and heavier!

  12. J.... B....

I'm 64 years old born in 1955 I remember hearing this song about 40 years ago! Like plundered my soul!just released 40 years later off of exile on main Street! I wonder if this shed Mick Taylor on it? Stones never needed Altamont speedway! They had it all wrapped up before then! I think they really eclipse The Beatles! Around 2,000 light years ago!

  13. M.... W....

Remember who you say you are!

  14. H.... L....

the best song of 'performance' - the only one except for 'natural magic'? anyway, love that song and the film.

  15. 1.... ....

Took me 25 years to find this song. Goodfellas. The sample was only a few seconds. Thanks Shazam! Finally .

  16. M.... m....

one of the best Stones tracks ever, except, it wasn´t the Stones.

  17. C.... T....

How does this not have a million views?

  18. M.... N....

You're a fa99y little leather boy with a smaller piece of stick.

  19. H.... L....

the song, the singer, the film: just perfect! saw the film about 10 times or more ...

  20. M.... K....

Now I knew my Pittsburgh guys always wanted guns and since I was gonna see them later in the afternoon to pick up a delivery, I was pretty sure I'd get my money back.

  21. a.... l....

Let's get the coke and have some fun.

  22. P.... F....

Ry Cooder is probably the only slide player of the " modern " era that
has his own sound . Duane Allman was fantastic , Mick Taylor was
great . Rory Gallagher was wonderful . Ry has a sound of his own .
As soon as you hear a song like this or Sister Morphine you know .
    That's Ry Cooder .

    P.... F....

Marvelous touch and fluidity. Ry stands with the very best.

    P.... F....

    lowell george?

    P.... F....

Lowell George and Roy Rodgers . do you know Roy's stuff

    P.... F....

    Don't forget Derek Trucks!!!

    P.... F....

Completely agree with you, Paul Fuller. They treated him badly. Mind you, what came later (Mick Taylor) was sublime.

  23. J.... C....

    - Vocals: Mick Jagger
    - Slide Guitar: Ry Cooder
    - Electric Guitar: Russ Titelman
    - Piano: Randy Newman
    - Bass: Jerry Scheff
    - Drums: Gene Parsons

    J.... C....

    A heck of a lineup!

  24. B.... J....

It is also infinitely better than the other version in IMHO.

  25. C.... K....

    Fuckin' Ayy! Cooder Jagger

  26. d.... ....

one of the most underrated songs of all time...

  27. S.... K....

    love this sexy song

  28. S.... T....

This was the absolute highlight of the great film, "Performance."

  29. D.... R....

Just a badass song that couldn't be written today...

  30. l.... p....

Hey Billy watch the movie It played at a theater I couldnt get into because I was 14 so I got my first job at that place . Just to see it. Dont ask my age women dont tell

  31. R.... 9....

    Goodfellas !!!

    R.... 9....

Helicopters, tomato sauce and dirty slide guitar.

  32. B.... B....

    Oh dear a God....sex with a guitar!

  33. S.... K....

one of the greatest songs ever recorded by a rock band

    S.... K....

This recording wasn't made by a rock band you idiot.

    S.... K....

@Yurek Hunt why are you so bothered?? do you have nothing better to do with your life than rage and act like you're above other people in a YouTube comment section?? go be a sad excuse for a human being somewhere else you fucking degenerate waste of skin

  34. M.... M....

    Performance was such cool garbage.

  35. R.... N....

Are y'all as sick as I am of that shitwit's fascist ranting all over youTube before a song plays?

  36. J.... H....

Jagger needs lipstick like Dolly Parton needs padding.

  37. S.... P....

When the director of this film died Keef said that it was the best thing he ever did. I guess Mick getting too comfy with Anita hurt him. Cooder on fire here!

    S.... P....

Didn't hurt him at all because while Mick and Anita were filming Performance Keith snuck over and fucked Marianne Faithful. You should read his book. Gives a good bit of information on that period of time and what went on.

  38. p.... t....

    greatest rock song EVER

  39. B.... J....

Well Sean Durack, everything I looked up says its written by Jagger and Richards. Sung by Jagger. That makes it a Stones song IMHO.

  40. n.... ....

So funky I can smell it.

  41. B.... K....

    Attention ,paroles perturbantes .

  42. J.... B....

    Metamorphosis boot leg album.

    J.... B....

    Used to have a copy.

    J.... B....

    Jello Biafra still relevant

  43. B.... J....

Probably the best Stones song nobody ever mentions/many don't know. Powerful!! Lyrics are SO GOOD!!!

    B.... J....

    NOT a Stones song...

    B.... J....

@sean durack well it is on a stones album, but not this version

  44. R.... K....

    Audio only ....

  45. D.... K....

This song always makes me cry...outstanding!!!

  46. T.... P....

Now thats how to do rap.

  49. R.... M....

Randy Newman on Piano? What piano?

  50. M.... D....

Mick has been listening to highway 61.

  51. T.... L....

    Has anyone seen Lou Dact?

  52. W.... ....

The excellent recording. Just perfect - Ry Cooder - slide guitar, Russ Titelman - guitar, Randy Newman - piano, Jerry Scheff - bass and Gene Parsons - brilliant drumming - par excellence.

    W.... ....

didn't know the other Stones weren't on it, but Ry Cooder...unmistakable!

    W.... ....

Thanks for posting the individuals.. Gonna look em all up...

    W.... ....

I hear Lowell George on there too. He's listed on the film credits.

  53. O.... G....

    RIP Nicolas Roeg.

  54. K.... R....

What is a small piece of stick?

    K.... R....

    ....a little dick...

  55. B.... C....

Performance, not Goodfellas brought me here.

    B.... C....

    Mr. Scorsese says hello

  56. h.... ....

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
    All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

    “Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
    The frumious Bandersnatch!”

    He took his vorpal sword in hand;
Long time the manxome foe he sought—
So rested he by the Tumtum tree
    And stood awhile in thought.

And, as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
    And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
    The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
    He went galumphing back.

“And hast thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
    O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!”
    He chortled in his joy.

’Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
    All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

  57. K.... O....

Ry cooder made that tune as ever. Signitiure beat. Once they fucked hin over go away. Learn your history. Stones suck my rolling stones!!

  58. m.... s....

Didn't Arthur 'Two Sheds' Jackson do a non-vocal bagpipe and theremin version of this tune?

  59. t.... ....

    I love the drums

    t.... ....

    Gene Parsons = genius

  60. m.... ....

So Jagger def went solo a decade too late. This is it!

  61. D.... H....

    Mick jagger,,legenda hidup,rock n bleus,,singer in the world,.

  62. k.... m....

all little guys who doing rap have to get back home and learn from this giant song

  63. L.... M....

    Jagger at his swaggering best

  64. g.... h....

    atmospheric

  65. E.... B....

"a GOODTIMES ENTERPRISES PRODUCTION"....I'll bet! Killer work, especially when the transition to C# Minor ("Come now, gentlemen')

  66. k.... ....

    Pure sleaze...just genius.

    F.... G....

    Thank you.

    F.... G....

I think he sings AND I seen you down in San Antone........YOU were eating eggs......etc etc. Anyway, what a fucking great song, whatever the words are. Ry Cooder is still bitter as fuck about the way they used him: and quite rightly too.

  68. m.... b....

    AWESOME

  69. M.... B....

    Performance!

  70. A.... T....

Interesting to think what the Stones would have been like if Cooder had joined?

    A.... T....

And if he’d stuck with Marianne and written more great lyrics.

    A.... T....

Alice M: You're kidding right? Marianne Faithfull?? Have a day off!

    A.... T....

Absolutely , Ry is a very special and talented guitarist but fall out with Jagger or Richards and that's it my friend. Ry is getting the credit he deserves looking at all these comments about his latest album. first saw him in 70's at Hammersmith Odeon need to see him again. You like to think it would have been something special if he was a Stone even just for a few years

  71. p.... t....

    greatest rock song ever

  72. C.... L....

Outstanding music. Love it. Thank you!!

  73. R.... F....

    it was ham surrey

  74. E.... W....

The 1st 30 seconds had me reeled in

  75. C.... l....

just do it. please. .you'll be happy you did

  76. C.... l....

if you watched the movie performance, you'd understand

    C.... l....

    off the wall flick

    C.... l....

I regarded the "you all work for me" moment as the high point of the entire movie.

    C.... l....

Cheryl loves bling : just watched it again, such an underrated film... I just can’t get enough of it.

    C.... l....

I’d better see it *again,* from the perspective of many years later. At first viewing back then, whatever I’d consumed made this film even MORE unsettling and confusing.

  77. J.... ....

Man, I forgot about this song and used to love it. I reading a Stones book and saw the title and just had to look it up. Keith refused to play on this one (Mick and Anita allegedly hooking up during the movie), but Ry Cooder sure took advantage of that opportunity.

    J.... ....

I remember you in Hemlock Road!

    J.... ....

Mick couldn't get Keith in the sack so he settled for Anita...

    J.... ....

    @zazoom84 lol

  78. M.... ....

"stop with those fuckin drugs, they're makin your mind into mush"

  79. c.... ....

Cheeerzzzzz mi owd nocker....HD too ..like its Christmas.......ohhh it is....ta Santa...x

  80. D.... T....

This track was recorded in Los Angeles in early 1970, and uses the vocal track of the first, slow version. The tape of Jagger's vocals was sent to Jack Nitzsche, where all music parts were recorded by Ry Cooder on slide guitar, Russ Titelman (guitar), Randy Newman (piano), Jerry Scheff (bass) and Gene Parsons (drums).

    D.... T....

I love this song!!! An ex-boyfriend bought it for me on Vinyl, & took me to see the movie. I think it was in the early '80's. Still love listening to it! A Classic, just like the Stones!

    D.... T....

OMG, a band actually gets named and praised!!!!

    D.... T....

thx awesome info peace out my man

    D.... T....

  84. p.... ....

Jimmy Miller on drums I believe

    p.... ....

Gene Parsons from the Byrds lots of Byrds in the stones 65-73 years

    p.... ....

    It was Mad Cyril

    p.... ....

    @Masstransit2: "We've BEEN courteous!"

  85. G.... B....

The genius of Ry Cooder. :-)

    G.... B....

His guitar is also important for Sister Morphine, too.

    G.... B....

didn't know it was him, but now you say so, it doesn't surprise me

    G.... B....

This was recorded before his first album, I believe.

  87. S.... T....

Jagger acts!  Jagger raps!!  Thanks for posting!  A kickass song.

  88. H.... P....

This song was in Good Fellas!
It got a lot of air play on KMET and KLOS in LA back in 71' and 72'
Ry Cooder was badass on that slide guitar!

    H.... P....

Sure 'nuff n yes I do

    H.... P....

Or was It Al Kooper on slide ?

    H.... P....

    Devilz DandruFF yes indeed!!

    H.... P....

hangsolo: Not a chance!! It's Cooder! It's also instantly recognisable as Cooder! Jagger wouldn't have know Lowell George at this point in time anyway. George had just left The Mothers at the point this was recorded so where would Jagger have heard George playing slide guitar? It's unlikely he would have heard Lowell's previous band The Factory because at the time they never got as far as releasing an album! Jagger's memory is shot to bits. Where's his book? Mick and Keef became aware of George later. On the Stones '72 Us Tour Keef later told NME, The album that they both played to death was Little Feat's 'Sailin' Shoes'! I'm not surprised, it's easily the greatest Stones album that the Stones Never recorded!

    H.... P....

    It's Ry dipshit .
