Rolling Stones, The - Can't You Hear Me Knocking Lyrics

Yeah, you got satin shoes
Yeah, you got plastic boots
Y'all got cocaine eyes
Yeah, you got speed-freak jive
Can't you hear me knockin' on your window
Can't you hear me knockin' on your door
Can't you hear me knockin' down your dirty street, yeah
Help me baby, I ain't no stranger
Help me baby, I ain't no stranger
Help me baby, I ain't no stranger
Can't you hear me knockin', ahh, are you safe asleep?
Can't you hear me knockin', yeah, down the gas light street, now
Can't you hear me knockin', yeah, throw me down the keys
Alright now
Hear me ringing big bell tolls
Hear me singing soft and low
I've been begging on my knees
I've been kickin', help me please
Hear me prowlin'
I'm gonna take you down
Hear me growlin'
Yeah, I've got flatted feet now, now, now, now
Hear me howlin'
And all, all around your street now
Hear me knockin'
And all, all around your town

  13. J.... F....

Incredible! “Far Out Magazine”, whatever that is, claims the opening riff is by Keith Richards, not Mick Taylor. WTF? (This from a story on SmartNews about all of Keith’s amazing opening riffs on classic Stones songs).

    J.... F....

Yes Keefs riffs, played on "open tuning." Mick Taylors lead at end. Best song ever... The end section was apparently recorded as the band just jammed on ... Classic !

  14. L.... B....

    happy birthday keith!!!!!!!!!!!!

  15. R.... ....

Love this one by the Stones....they were IT when I was a teen.

  16. G.... M....

Unfortunately, for too long a time, I thought this song was on "Jamming With Edward". That's why I missed out on it so long. I didn't have the money to go out and buy every album I thought MIGHT be a good one....I had to KNOW it was a good one. Of course, that was way before the internet where you could find out lame, stupid info so easily.

  17. R.... G....

Badass! Full on loaded and loud from the GREATEST R and R band of all time! Been listening to the Stones since ‘71 and they still sound just as fresh today as they did back then....

  18. D.... H....

I started doin' my own things nobody ever thought of doin'. To keep an eye on things, I brought in my kid brother Dominick and some desperados, and started knockin' over high-rollers, casino bosses... bookmakers... anybody right here in town. I had a good fuckin' crew goin' for me, I'll tell you that. I had Sal Fusco, a great second-story guy. Jack Hardy. He worked for a safe company before he did a six-year bit. And then there was Bernie Blue. This guy can bypass any alarm for me. It was like old times."

  32. F.... D....

So, once they pulled that shit, I started doin' my own things in Vegas nobody ever thought of doin'. To keep an eye on things, I brought in my kid brother Dominick... and some desperadoes from back home and started knockin' over high rollers, casino bosses, bookmakers, anybody, right here in town. I had a good fuckin' crew goin' for me, I'll tell you that. I had Sal Fusco, a great second-story guy. Jack Hardy, he worked for a safe company after he did a six-year bit. And then there was Bernie Blue. This guy could bypass any alarm for me. And I opened up my own jewelry store, too: 'The Gold Rush'.

Holy Guacamole what a track! Context matters, I was 14 when this album came out, couldn't get enough.............still sounds as fresh as the first time I heard it. It was a golden time in rock...............thank you Rolling Stones!

  39. C.... S....

Very rarely a few musicians and a singer come together and the combination is simply magical...this is one of those very rare occasions. You can have the best musicians in the world play together but generally that does not produce timeless soul touching grooves that touch you somewhere I cannot even explain. The Stones do this repeatedly with their music. What would life be like without the Rolling Stones. When you cannot imagine it....

  40. M.... M....

    Rock in it Mick Taylor

  41. D.... D....

It is funny that sometimes when people aren't themselves, and they are known to give off the impression of joyful, glad and happy people most of the time. Saying to them that their mouth is somewhere else singing joyful shouts, may mean that as far as integrity and its definition to some, they are not (doing or feeling) what they (did or felt) at the time in which they were themselves. Author Jeff Olson in his Book titled,'The Slight Edge,'says Slight Edge integrity is: "doing what you said you were going to do even if the feeling or mood you felt when you said what you said, is no longer the feeling you presently feel." In page(91),chapter (6) titled,'The(7)Slight Edge Principles.'

    A.... D....

Hey man , , eh , dont bowl guard . .pass some of that this way .

    LGB!!!!!

  56. J.... R....

Do you guys think Keith Richards was jealous of Mick Taylor’s guitar playing & taking the lead spot on most of their songs in the Mick Taylor era? Tell me if I’m wrong, but I read somewhere they both had a misunderstanding which is a reason why Taylor left The Rolling Stones?

    J.... R....

Taylor has said he left the Stones because he was afraid of ending up a drug casualty. There were probably other reasons too, but thay's the one he has given as the main one.

  57. A.... D....

    Shortcomings, honest mistakes.

  58. A.... D....

Sound or noise travels at about 750(mph) the last person to hear its echo is supposedly hearing voices.

  59. A.... D....

G tuning? Three(3)kinds of people: (1).Those who make things happen, (2).Those who know what happened, (3).Those who ask what happened.

  60. A.... D....

    (E,A,D,G,B,E. 123456.)(E,G,B,E,A,D. 145623.)

  61. A.... D....

I'm guessing(E)tuning is standard tuning.(A) and on=D,G,B,E.And(G)tuning is (G) from the third fret on (E) low pitch and so on=B,E,A,D.

  62. A.... D....

Squid,(from the fifth fret on string E low pitch).Fifth fret on (E) low pitch is (A) and so on and so forth,D,G,B,E.

  63. T.... J....

Makes me think of Martin Scorcese

  64. Q.... R....

The comment section for this song is almost as legendary as the song itself....

  65. E.... W....

Can’t you hear me knocking, by the Rolling Stones, is a warning of tragedy and rejection impending. The narrator scribes an allegory that paints a picture of a predatory cocaine addict who prospects for party girls, while pushing drugs for favors in return. He begs them, desperately, for wheels and sex, but to no avail. His friendships are short-lived. The narrator suggests a group of women led to his homelessness and abandonment, as he eagerly seeks to replace a “lost love” to fill his void. His vicarious behavior, prejudice, and frustration is revealed in the lines “Y'all got cocaine eyes” and “Can't you hear me knockin' down your dirty street, yeah”. Y'all is a contraction of "you all". Can't is a contraction of cannot, expressing he is unable to achieve his goal because she did him dirty. So the abused becomes the abuser, as they got speed-freak jive from someone. He’s flat-footed, because he’s always walking the street to score, begging relentlessly. He longs for sex and drugs, speaks of wedding bells amid fraudulent contracts, and he lies about kicking the habit ("I've been kickin', help me please"). I’m uncertain about what narrative mode it was written in, as a polemical allusive imitation written in first person narrative is a rhetorical mode in literature that blames nobody specific and is portrayed by a fictitious character.

  93. R.... G....

The Stones pulled out all the stops on this track. The extended jam is one of their best. Read an account of its recording and it's a complete accident that this was played and recorded. The band thought the producer would go to a fade-out after Mick's vocal so they kept on playing. The whole jam is complete improvisation; the sax, the spacey guitar solo, everything. It's a gift from the musical gods to the listening public. Taylor goes into the closing windup and Charlie Watts punctuates the ending with a cymbal crash as if on cue. A jazz tour-de-force that Traffic would have had trouble pulling off! Glad they found seven minutes plus on the LP for the whole thing.

  94. C.... :....
