Roger Miller - River In The Rain Lyrics

River in the rain sometimes at night you look like a long white train
Winding your way away somewhere river I love you don't you care
If you're on the run winding some place just tryin' to find the sun
Whether the sunshine whether the rain river I love you just the same
But sometimes in a time of trouble
When you're out of hand and your muddy bubbles roll across my floor
Carryin' away the things I treasure hell there ain't ain't no way to measure
Why I love you more than I did the day before
River in the rain sometimes at night you look like a long white train
Winding your way away from me river I've never seen the sea

But sometimes in a time of trouble...

Although catagorized as a "Country" singer, Roger Miller is actually what I would call a "Balladeer" His hits crossed boundries into "Pop" and Folk... But I think "Balladeer" describes him perfectly. I knew him personally in the Early '60s before his hits of Dang Me and Chug a lug. Long before King of the Road.

  4. S.... F....

its very hard to find but he wrote a song for terri gibbs called ''I just dont love you thats all'' its as good as this and this song cant be beat

My husband and I are old now. We were running our Walker hound on a side road here in Houston County, Tennessee, when this song that we had never heard before came up on Sirius, and about knocked us out of the truck. I always knew the man could write, but had never heard him sing so well, so powerfully before. Thank God for these artists, these souls, who inspire the rest of us to keep trying, to keep loving. Sweet blessings on his memory.

    R.... S....

Thank God for Sirius xm and Dallas Wayne. He played this on his show.

+Dave Wollenberg AWESOME SONG! As I posted on one of your other comments, I am going back in time 30 years to hear the weekly country top 40 from this week in 1985. Plan to do this for the next 5 years so I can relive the "Neotraditional Era" of Country Music week by week (86 to 89)! Right now I can access the full top 40 (top 100 even!) on Billboard's archived magazines week by week. However, after December of 1986 there is not another one until December of 1989. I plan to then cut it to the top 25 which are posted on Billboard's Hot Country Songs Chart Archives (which date back only to January of 1985). Do you have any access to Billboard's full top 40 (each week) in 1987, 88, and 89? That would be great if you did because although the top 25 covers all the major hits and then some, I would miss great songs like this that peaked at #36. Unfortunately Roger Miller's last top 40 song on country radio. Great song though. Hard to believe this is the same guy who does "Can't Roller-skate In A Buffalo Herd" and "Dang Me!" Anyway I figured you would be the one to ask about more billboard weekly chart archives from the late 80s as you seem to know this chart backward and frontward. Anyway love your comments. What a shame this song was only in the top 40 for 2 weeks. Great song. LOVING this era of country music though! Such a magical mix of pop, folk, bluegrass, etc in there. Lots more diversity in the late 80s than in today top 40 country hit list; Not to mention about 4 new songs in the countdown every week. I was born in 1987 and actually do not remember this era, but it is awesome reliving the country music of this era through collecting these billboard hits. Keep up the great posts.

    D.... W....

+George Pilzer I finally answered my own question. Dave, do you know about THIS page? http://www.americanradiohistory.com/Billboard-Magazine.htm AWESOME info here. EVERY Billboard Magazine addition from 1943 to 2009. Includes the full charts in every genre EACH WEEK, INCLUDING COUNTRY!!! THIS is where I will get my info on the FULL country charts each week in 1987, 88, and 89 where they are not listed on that other site. Is this where you get all of your facts and trivia from too?

This is my all time favourite Roger Miller song

  93. J.... R....

Looking for a recording of Jamey Johnson signing this live.  I've heard him do it, and it's awesome.  Great song.

  94. r.... ....

I always thought of this song as metaphor for addiction and those whose lives have been scared by it.  It reminds of my mother who battled drugs and alcohol all her life.  I think of my brother and I when Roger sings "But in a time of trouble, when you're out of hand and your muddy bubbles roll across my floor."  Of course we could always see how she was destroying herself, but still some part of her was always our beautiful mother.  "Carrying away the things I treasure, hell there ain't no way to measure why I love you more than I did the day before."

    r.... ....

toked a bit but no hard stuff

    r.... ....

Miller did have a (rumored) amphetamine addiction in the early 70's that supposedly effected his songwriting ability.

    r.... ....

But I don't believe that this song was ever written as a metaphor for drug addiction. It was written for "Big River"', a broadway musical about Huckleberry Finn. It's about the Mississippi River.

When I get to the other side, the first concerts I want to attend are Roger Miller and Robin Gibb.

    A.... B....

Both very talented. They were so much better than the drivel we get today.

    A.... B....

I would add the other half of Uncle Tupelo to that. Sun Volt is making some fine music as well.

  96. T.... Y....

Great ! Bob. Love the images too.
