The first time I heard this song I remembered some friends from when I was in high school. We were in the shed behind their house and there was a Lionel train set set up that was covered with dust. One of the guys said, "That was Steven's, we can't touch it." Their brother was the first from our town to die in Vietnam, and their mother kept the train set as a shrine. It was one of my first inklings of real grief.

I think Steven would want you guys to run the trains. His Mom may have thought that you boys would emulate Gomez Addams.

I have loved this song since the 60's. For years, no one played it on the radio at Christmas. Something I couldn't understand at all but the big things were the Electric Light Orchestra and Mannheim Steamroller (which I do love but). About ten years ago, it started showing up again as if someone discovered a hidden gem tucked away in a safe and unseen for years. Roger is gone, but his legacy of great songs remains. This takes me back to the late 40's and early 50's when I couldn't wait for Christmas morning.

I was born in 1967 and will soon be 52 yrs old. I have loved this song since I heard it as a child. I am a District Manager, now, with many responsibilities, but I often think of the wonderful simpler times just like this song. I can just shut my eyes and this song takes me back to those happy days as a child!! God has Blessed us all richly!!! Can I get an AMEN?

My grandparents and all of my uncles, yes I had a couple fun and crazy ones, are all gone. To me they all made Christmas so exciting. I found that I couldn't recreate that magic with my daughter while she was growing up. Oh, we had good Christmases, but it just seemed like something was missing. Too much running for various programs and what not. I guess that's what Christmas is today. I'm grateful that she got to meet and grow up some with my uncles. I think they all made a good impression on her and added a little fun to her life.

It's ironic that in the year 1967 when this tune was written, the great Lionel Corporation was on its deathbed - no annual "wishbook" catalog for the first time in 60-plus years. The legendary Hillside, NJ factory was closed and the manufacturing equipment auctioned off in 1967. In the midst of this chaos, the Lionel Corp. somehow managed to buy their bankrupt chief competitor, Gilbert ("American Flyer" trains) but, overall, 1967 went down as their worst year ever. (In 1970 the "new" MPC - Lionel started producing toy trains again, but this time from Michigan.)
