Rodney Crowell - Things I Wish I'd Said Lyrics
You lay there fighting for each breath
While angels hovered 'round your bed
With open arms like God' s own smile
They led you to the light
And now your journey has begun
To the land where spirits fly
And your soul will never die
So travel lightly in my heart
You and I will never part
And far beyond this world we see
There's a place for you and me
And I thank my lucky stars
Now I don't have to hang my head
Over things I wish I'd said
So here am I your only son
I'm thinking back on work we've done
You were strong and I was young
Man we had our fights
And everything I felt for you
Has been turned to something new
And this is love I feel today
It will never go away
So travel lightly in my heart
You and I will never part
Far beyond this world we see
There's a place for you and me
And I thank the moon and stars
We had a chance to heal our scars
Now I don't have to hang my head
Over things I wish I'd said
I don't have to hide my tears
I don't have to drown my fears
And I don't have to hang my head
Over things I wish I'd said
No, I don't have to live in dread
Over things I wish I'd said

Rodney Crowell Things I Wish I'd Said Comments
One of the best live performances of a song I've ever heard. It memorializes, with such clarity, his last visit with his dieing father. I like it better than the studio version.
Love this song, almost makes my eyes water!!!
just discovered this song.. it's something of awesome, cannot stop to cry; but I like it completely
''travel lightly in my heart''-------What does it mean??????????????Can someone explain in other words.Please…..
Wow good stuff
When my aunt died in 1991, I wore this song out playing it over & over crying! My favorite singer!
Rodney, you've written some good ones but, I think this is yr very best. Thank you. Very meaningful song & it reminds us all to settle things before it's too late. I'm glad to hear that you do believe in a better place to get to. I just HOPE you know that the Bible (New Testament) teaches that it's ONLY belief in Jesus that can get us there. And of course, we have to ask for forgiveness for what all we've done wrong since God won't let impurities into a sinless Heaven. God bless you kid. See you there. Virginia
That's a heavenly inspired beautiful song Rodney wrote ….
in his own way, as good as Hank Williams...
The most beautiful song ive ever heard.
Fifty One Dislikes?....Maybe those Folks got some taste...in their mouths??

Yes I love that song and the man sang it
My grandpa died a couple days ago and we had his funeral today and he had this song play and I would love to learn how to play the solo at 1:24 in honor of my grandpa of which he was in the marines.
The poets poet. Gods blessings to you sir.

What a battle you have won
And now your journey has begun

So travel lightly in my heart
You and I will never part
And far beyond this world we see

Breathtakingly beautiful. Wow.
I got a few shivers, goosebumps, and a lump in the throat listening to this. Had to play it a few times one-after-the-other to catch it all. My Father died alone, in a nursing home, coming up 4 years ago on 2nd May 2014. I myself was in hospital a hundred miles away, and was unfit to travel when they called my mobile (cell) phone to inform me he passed away. He was in good spirits the last time I spoke to him, and I arranged to see him when I got discharged and was fit to travel out to the home. It would only have been (hopefully) 2 weeks. I talked with him on Thursday evening (May 1st). The next day, he was having his tea and biscuits before bedtime at 9pm, and was noted to be in good cheer and still joking with the staff. The nurse came to collect his cup at 10pm and give him his medication, but that was it - in the space of an hour, he decided to leave this world.
I never got to say the few things I wanted him to hear. And likewise, there were a few things he never said to me, as neither of us were emotional in that sense (we never said we loved each other, and I never even called him Dad). We were just like 2 mates that got drunk together, rode our motorbikes, and took the piss out of each other quite a bit.
Els mijn lieve Els zal je nooit vergeten!
What a beautiful song,,,Rodney goes un noticed as a song writer and a musician....we love you buddy.
Such a beautiful song,,,,Rodney Crowell sings it from the heart..
Stuart Sullenbarger ...no, Rodney, you aren't un-noticed as a songwriter and instrumentalist! I have appreciated those talents ever since I 1st heard you. So glad you settled down though!
Mom died from cancer in 2004; Dad left us in 2013. This is for both of you. I can't wait to see you both in eternity, worshiping Jesus around His magnificent throne.
Mom & Dad
You lay there fighting for each breath, while angels hover around your bed
My dad has been gone almost 9 years and I still think about him every day. His photo is the screensaver shot on my cell phone. This song reminds me how much I loved...and still do love him.
OMG!!!!!!!!
I wanted to sing this at my mom's funeral. She passed from lung cancer Easter night 2004. I dared not after my dad committed suicide September 2013. If I could have one wish, it wouldn't be for fortune or fame, but to sit once more and talk with them.
I love this song,GREAT SINGER.
Rodney Crowell & Alan Jackson are 2 of my favorites in the country music scene. the first time I heard "I Couldn't Leave You if I Tried" it caught my attention, big time! I then took notice with more of his music. great songwriter!
Love this man and his music, a true American treasure.
I'd listen to anything Rodney wrote. So talented!
Many years ago in 1991, my husband and I were watching The Ralph Emery show in Nashville network. Rodney Crowell was on and sang this song. Our 20 yr old son, kevin, had left a couple of hours before this. He came over and hugged me, and told me he loved me and would be back in a little while. This song came on and I told my husband that if something happened to Kevin, our last words were, "I love you." An hour later, our doorbell rang. Our son had lost his life in an accident. My sister wrote to Rodney and told him about this and how we had just heard this song. Rodney sent us a card, and a tape from that show with him singing this song. He is a wonderful man.
god bless you and your family. i just came along to this , and i lost my dad, niece, and uncle within 1 month. march 2017, and this is just so beautiful! take care of each other, because this world is just crazy anymore. xoxox!!!!!!💗

Classic!!!
Rodney Crowell wrote this for his late father who, like many of us had some or, in some cases , many differences with our fathers but had a chance to reconcile those differences before it was too late. RIP Dad, I Love & miss you. everyday.

Rodney Crowell is an American treasure -- this song lives in my heart forever.

Len Krautheim, This is the one of the best songs ever . if you don't like it you are already dead!

It would not be hard to think of this song as being one of the best all time, considering the subject matter we all have ......

What a beautiful song and lyrics Rodney Crowell. I have sung it many times for Friends I have lost, it's very appropriate. Thank you for writing lyrics that my heart feels to say at times like the loss of my friends.
I keep coming back to listening to this song to listen over and over.
I wanted to sing this at my mother's service 2004, but didn't have the strength. I wanted to sing this at my dad's service in 2013, but it didn't seem right, as he committed suicide. I still miss them.
In 2012, I lost my dad to Alz. In those last few days that he was conscious, I made sure he heard everything I wanted him to know. While I'm sure he already knew, in those last days of consciousness , when I knew he could still here me, I told him I loved him and that beyond that, he was and will always be my hero. So now, 2 years later, this song still rings so true to me.
This song expresses how I feel about my Dad. Five years gone, and forever in my heart. I love you Dad, and I love Rodney for writing such a heartfelt song.
I remember you dad every day..and I will see you again. a happy day that lasts forever
Mark Kelly ...i thought he said it was written about his mother.... a good pne, at any rate.
This is such a beautiful song. Just change the word son to fit your own situation.....
Miss you daddy. Love you forever. See you on the other side when it is my time.
really need mom and dad right now....decisions to make <3
i miss you dad you were my hero and best frind love rick
Rodney wrote it...
oh wow......
Made me almost cry...sadly I do have tings I wish I'd said to both my parents especially my dad and my brother too
Beautiful --- Reminds me of the many loved ones I've lost and never had a chance to say what I wanted to say.
hope my brother sees this
After reading this, I really do not have words to express my sorrow for you. I just pray that God helps you deal with this. Again, I am so very sorry for your loss.
Beautiful song..Makes me cry, reminds me of my Daddy so much.
Thank you for sharing that lovely story. I cannot think of a more appropriate song for him to sing at your dad's memorial. So moving, although it tends to bring the tears up. It doesn't surprise me a bit that Rodney was so sweet and gracious; he is just that sort of person. :-)
Rodney has been so great throuhhout career, but I didn't realize that this one song would touch me so deeply. Thank you for putting down on paper what i feel in my heart. I love you mom.
Beautiful song
I lost my best friend to a shooting and just heard this song I wish the writer to know he wrote my heart.....R.I.P Keithy Wilson
The story of my Dad and me when I was young. Once I matured I found my best friend. Cant help but shed a tear.
Thanks so much for posting this. My heart breaks anew every time I hear it, thinking of my Dad who died last year, but this song is just remarkable. So, so beautiful. Many thanks to you , too Rodney. I second that, the poster who said he is a gift. Rodney HAS a gift, and he IS one, to music appreciators everywhere.
"Now I don't have to hang my head over things I wish I'd said" Great line and something to think about before it's too late.
How & Why does Rodney have such "Poetry", Beautiful words
Inside of Him.
What a Gift He is to Us.
