Rod Stewart - Lady Day Lyrics

North winds have made my face a little older
and my back is bent through trying too hard
My vest is torn so I make no perfect picture
to place upon your white-washed wall
I'd like to stay but you have not asked me
Still I don't really expect you to
Dusty boots would shame you now Lady Day
Are we really that far apart
I wish the world could see you now Lady Day
laughing down at your oldest friend
The one who shared just about all he had
in a one-sided love affair
I get scared when I remember too much

Wasted time I suppose you could say that
Strange it don't seem that way to me
But wait a minute
I don't even think you're listening
Just let me tell you how I really feel
I've seen the inside of your heart Lady Day
when you wanted to be shown the way
I loved you then as I love ya now girl

This version of the song is recorded too fast.

    C.... S....

Did you play it on 45 rpm instead of 33 and a third?

    C.... S....

    Heheheh. :)

To jockybee1, you say Scotlands finest voice? He wasnt from Scotland, he was from Middlesex!

The slide guitar on this album was done by the late Sam Mitchell. IMO in the same league as Ry Cooder (whose playing I love).

    f.... a....

That was Ronnie Wood. Sam Mitchell played with Rod later.

Rod in the rock and roll hall of fame, TWICE!..once with The Faces and once as a solo artist...Nuff said...

Ive news for you girl, we never understand life properly, its a continual learning curve, some parts we grasp, other parts we dont, its like being at school. Rod was young & hungry when this album came out, the more success he achieved the more lazy & less creative he became, as the decades went on the weaker his material became

lol...Im thinking that "life" took over ....You figure with juggling wives, and what, 8 kids? Homes, yachts, ali-money, Mr. Stewart has been busy..As a young girl I played this whole album over and over and over..before I knew life. There are a whole lot of us that know he is not just a "pop" machine....but a VERY creative force....I guess he's still hitting the iron while its still hot........tc

    M.... ....

MissSusieQue1 Well said, Miss Susie🙂 (I too, listened to Rod's music as a young girl over and over❤)

    @chapelierfoudre

Yeah, I hear you.I am tired of trying to explain to folks that Rod used to be a respectable artist with some of the most heartfelt performances ever put to tape

  11. v.... ....

What happened to Mr.Stewart? Is he possessed of a demon or something? We want him back.He was among the most brilliant musicians of the early seventies. The same could be said for Ronnie

    v.... ....

    People get old dumbshit

@NitroGary01 I hear you. This song is pretty complex for a popular song. The multiple rhythms, harmonies, rhythm lines, atonalities. It must be the gray and slate blue Scottish skies that brings that blue note to him. His early '70s music reminds me of a line from Three Days of the Condor, when Robert Redford is commenting on Faye Dunaway's photographs: "Not Fall, not Winter ---- November."

debbie bryant this is for you. keith

  14. N.... ....

Ah, my youth. Funny how, when I feel a little blue, all Rod's early albums seem to fit the situation. Never a dull Moment, Gasoline Ally, Every Picture', and particularly Smiler (his finest).
It makes me think of late at night, a few beers and darkness, and now a tear in my eye.

  15. d.... ....

    Probably his best album.....

  16. d.... ....

    Superb Album !

  17. F.... ....

That boy could tell a story and write a mean tune. One talented dude. An international treasure that Stewart.

  18. C.... F....

What an incredible gem ! So precisely played, with delicately intricated instruments all along the song. And oh so heartfelt, so tasteful !! ROD STEWART 1964 - 1974 : the most criminally ignored rock'n'roll career ever.

  19. S.... M....

For ever the "Crooner",The Faces great band

I agree Lady Day is one of Rods Finest.

    S.... S....

I agree...this is enhanced by Stewart's melody, lyric and vocal, and most importantly by the beautiful melodical, tasteful classical guitar of the late Martin Quittenton..... I never ever tire of listening to this beautiful song, mainly for the classical guitar of Quittenton, it's quite simply gorgeous.

    one of Rod's finest
