Rod Stewart - Every Picture Tells A Story Lyrics

Spent some time feelin' inferior
standing in front of my mirror
Combed my hair in a thousand ways
but I came out looking just the same

Daddy said, "Son, you better see the world
I wouldn't blame you if you wanted to leave
But remember one thing don't lose your head
to a woman that'll spend your bread"
So I got out

Paris was a place you could hide away
if you felt you didn't fit in
French police wouldn't give me no peace
They claimed I was a nasty person
Down along the Left Bank minding my own
Was knocked down by a human stampede
Got arrested for inciting a peacful riot
when all I wanted was a cup of tea
I was accused
I moved on

Down in Rome I wasn't getting enough
of the things that keeps a young man alive
My body stunk but I kept my funk
at a time when I was right out of luck
Getting desperate indeed I was
Looking like a tourist attraction
Oh my dear I better get out of here
'for the Vatican don't give no sanction
I wasn't ready for that, no no

I moved right out east yeah!
On the Peking ferry I was feeling merry
sailing on my way back here
I fell in love with a slit eyed lady
by the light of an eastern moon
Shangai Lil never used the pill
She claimed that it just ain't natural
She took me up on deck and bit my neck
Oh people I was glad I found her
Oh yeah I was glad I found her

I firmly believe that I didn't need anyone but me
I sincerely thought I was so complete
Look how wrong you can be

The women I've known I wouldn't let tie my shoe
They wouldn't give you the time of day
But the slit eyed lady knocked me off my feet
God I was glad I found her
And if they had the words I could tell to you
to help you on the way down the road
I couldn't quote you no Dickens, Shelley or Keats
'cause it's all been said before
Make the best out of the bad just laugh it off
You didn't have to come here anyway
So remember, every picture tells a story don't it

Freshman in college, 1974, when my Navajo roommate played this in our dorm room. This song through me into a state I never wanted to recover from. I still go into that state when I listen today. He also got me into Redbone, a native American rock group back then. Thanks Ron Yazzie!

@James Pritchett Ronnie Lane didn't play bass on "Every Picture Tells a Story", Ronnie Wood did.

  63. B.... G....

This an absolute masterpiece.  Vocals, acoustic guitar, thick baseline, powerful drums and great lyrics.

  68. P.... J....

    Rod Stewat at his best.

Rod with the Faces. With Jeff Beck and the Faces he was tops IMO. After that, I couldn't listen to him anymore.

    J.... F....

yep..that pretty much sums it up.

  70. K.... C....

She claimed that it wasn't natural.

  71. K.... C....

Neighbor's have to hate me....Get through 3/4 of song and then start at beginning again. Will do this about four times. So many great lines but love, "Got arrested for starting a peaceful riot"

  72. L.... M....

Rod Stewart is like Frank Sinatra, you either have that "unique" voice or you don't !.You then hope that something happens to put it out there. This is Rods finest example of his unique talent.

  73. r.... m....

n there she is at the end maggie bell

  74. B.... J....

Faces hands down one of the best bands of the 70,s

  75. I.... B....

  76. s.... m....

R.i.f.l.e. resistance is futile love everyone

  77. D.... E....

  78. C.... R....

My body stunk but I keep my funk.......

  79. D.... H....

One of my favorite, RodStweart when he was with incomparable, Faces YT, should have found a live rendition of the song. band performance.

  80. D.... H....

Kenny Jones is so much underrated, drummer, but he did play with my favorite, bands TheWho thou.

    D.... H....

This isnt Kenny ..this is Micky Waller on this cut

  81. S.... G....

I was 15 and naive - I heard this and wished I was Rod. God what a unit that was on that record, best pop singer we ever produced without playing the game. I cherish moments like these

  82. Y.... M....

Hey Rod hope ALL is GOOD Brother I still love your music like it's still 70s! Best ERA of Music STILL TOO! Peace!

    Y.... M....

    Yo mama!

  83. L.... C....

    Maggie Bell.

  84. B.... T....

This song was a knockout rambler back then. We did love the “Italian Girls” too! Great little band with Stewarty too! A slant eyed lady!? So politically incorrect! Wonderful stuff!

  85. S.... J....

    Ummmm perfect

  86. C.... Z....

I remember this from days long ago, a great song indeed. Yes Rod was once a rock n' roller and the Faces a good rock band. But this is a solo effort?

    C.... Z....

Ron Wood was on every track and all of the Faces were on at least some tracks. All his first three albums seem to be Faces albums my view and nothing since that time has been worth listening. He lost some essential component of himself when he made the Atlantic crossing and became a Las Vegas act, in essence.

    C.... Z....

@Grant Hurlburt Yeah, I saw him in 1979 in New Zealand. Blondes have more fun tour. God bless him, I've never seen so many women in any one place in my life but it was a ways away from Faces.

  87. B.... K....

Rods best vocal. Steve Harley cockney rebel co- wrote?

  88. l.... e....

One of my all time favorite songs from one of my all time favorite movie... Rocking Rod, now that would be a class act to see... He is amazing.....

  89. B.... C....

high water mark for rock = guts, feelings, confidence, swagger, self-deprication, hobo, world traveller, renegade, rebel, innocence, humor...it's all here in spades. masterpiece!

    B.... C....

It was a masterpiece album for sure and Rod's finest work. It had everything:, great guitars mixed with mandolin, great writing, a thumping rock beat, Rod's hoarse vocals.....just made for a classic album.

  90. M.... ....

Every picture tells a story ...Doughnut.

    M.... ....

Ha! I hear that every time! Homer's favourite song!

  91. P.... C....

He was best early with Jeff Beck, then the Faces, and his first few solo albums. To bad he went pop so early in his life.

  92. J.... C....

Cuando el sexi Rod Stewart, hacia buenas canciones.. Que las ha hecho, con todas las bandas que estuvo.

  93. J.... W....

I will play this song to the Martians when they come down to show them what rock and roll is!
