Rod Stewart - Dirty Old Town Lyrics

Found my love by the gaswork croft
Dreamed a dream by the old canal
Kissed my girl by the factory wall
Dirty old town, dirty old town

I heard a siren from the dock
Saw a train set the night on fire
Smelled the spring on the sulfured wind
Dirty old town, whoa-oh, dirty old town

We're goin' to take a good sharp axe
Shining steel tempered in the fire
And we'll chop you down like an old dead tree
Dirty old town, dirty old town
Dirty old town, whoa-oh, dirty old town

And oh we'll chop you down
Oh, dirty, dirty, dirty old town
Dirty old town, dirty old town
And oh whoa-oh dirty old town
Chop you down one of these days

Love this album. People think I'm crazy when I say I prefer Stewart's version of Street Fighting Man to the original.

We all think we know Rod but on vocals like this his emotional immediacy makes it one of rock's most mysterious instruments. Constricted almost but compelling. On Soundbreaking Roger Daltrey days Rod one of the few vocalists he knows who likes his own voice - Roger doesn't but also should of course .

Some say this song is about Dublin and some say it is about Salford

    A.... C....

Written by Ewan Macoll about Salford originally. Late 40s to early 50s I believe

@Adam Cooke The Irwell and the Irk are two rivers that run through Greater Manchester and in "A Manchester Alphabet" it was once said: "I is for Irwell, for Irk, and for ink - But none of these liquids is wholesome to drink". Apparently though the Irwell (Salford's river) has been cleaned up now

@Adrian Cooke Very interesting. No longer such a dirty old town then!

Some of his best. That period was stunning as far as his recordings. I find it sad that most people don't even know that it existed. They only tuned in when he went top 40, and it really wasn't quite the same.

this & Handbags are for me the 2 best of this album by a country mile

I've always loved the way these Brits play/sing American roots music.

    M.... B....

The song was written about Salford, Greater Manchester in Lancashire, England, the city where the writer Ewan MacColl was born and brought up.

He was a folk singer, songwriter and much of America's roots music has its origins in folk music from Britain and Ireland.

@amazed66 Very true. Another great one from the UK, that does rootsy, soul, Americana is Van Morrison. He's Irish, I know. I don't like the term Blue Eyed Soul particularly. American/Irish/British/black/white Soul Music is Soul Music.

@Manny Badabing Do you know Chris Stapleton? Probably his best known song is Tennessee Whiskey which is Bluesey/Country but I like this one too.

@P4R50N5 Who said there wasn't? Ireland has a rich culture and heritage and the music it has produced is among the most beautiful to ever grace the world. Eireann go brach
