Rod Stewart - Cut Across Shorty Lyrics

Now a country boy named Shorty
and a city boy named Dan
had to prove who could run the fastest
to wed Miss Lucy's hand

Now Dan had all the money
and he also had the looks
But Shorty musta had that something boys
that can't be found in books

Chorus:
"Cut across Shorty, Shorty, cut across"
That's what Miss Lucy said
"Cut across Shorty, Shorty, cut across
You know it's you that I wanna wed"

Wait a minute
Now Dan had been in training
about a week before the race
He made up his mind old Shorty
would end in second place
You know Dan with his long legs flying
he left Shorty far behind
Shorty heard him holler out
Miss Lucy that you'll soon be mine

(Chorus)

But Shorty wasn't worried
There was a smile upon his face
'Cause old Lucy had fixed the race
And just like that old story
about the turtle and the hare, you know that thing
when Danny crossed over the finish line
he found Shorty waiting there

(Chorus)

It's you that I wanna wed, no no
And oh Lord it's you I wanna wed
It's you that I wanna wed

Rod Stewart Cut Across Shorty Comments
  1. M.... M....

The Faces were extremely popular in Detroit, where they played many times at the Eastown Theater. I remember them playing Friday,Saturday and a matinee on Sunday. They would stay at a Holiday Inn on the east side of Detroit. My friends and I went to the Holiday Inn and we drank with them, really fun guys and they were really into the Current tune by Free "All Right Now" drinkin and dancin to the Free

  2. B.... R....

  3. s.... ....

The first time I heard this was live first American tour in my hometown of Chicago. All I knew was that rod once did vocals with Jeff Beck. And after this cut and you're my girl knew I'd be back for the second tour.Ahhh Hippie serendipity

  6. v.... ....

    Great early classic from rod.

  7. P.... S....

I'm a 68 year old black hippy from Chicago the first time I heard this song was live on their first American tour followed by you're my girl. But Ronnie Lane and Rod's duet on baby I'm amazed haunts me till this day r i p Ron.

  8. D.... ....

    Hollywood ruined him

  9. K.... ....

ELGROOVER: Thanks for using the original sleeve artwork from 1971 to illustrate this clip. That later pic they nearly always have now (showing just a stretch of cobblestones and a manhole cover) just isn't as evocative.

  10. j.... l....

Rod rocks this song, which was recorded by Eddie Cochran years earlier. This song is one of the many fine recordings on Gasoline Alley, which is a great album.

  11. L.... 1....

    Still love this old song...

  16. L.... J....

I've heard that Ron Wood once said that Rod Stewart could have been the greatest voice in the history of rock and roll, but decided he wanted to sing pop songs instead. This song is Rod at his finest.

  17. C.... F....

Pure magic from a bygone age.

  18. G.... G....

  22. A.... B....

Saw the Faces perform this at Fillmore West early 70s.. it will always remain a favorite memory.
I remember Bill Graham tossing apples to everyone as we came in
downstairs. Those were special times to be a part of. I can still see Rod, Ronny Lane, & Ron Wood singing into 1 mic. they were amazing.
    Thanku for putting this up.

  30. d.... ....

Some of the bass part on this track is bowed. Probably Dennis O'Flynn on an upright.

    d.... ....

    Ronnie Lane?

  31. J.... M....

one of my favorite songs ever..

  32. M.... S....

too see the faces live best ever just as great as Humble Pie the greatest days for sure, never got high to see bands so I could remember everydetail. I do remember even at 64.

  33. M.... S....

never ever get enough of Rod Stewart & The Faces.

  34. T.... C....

This and The Killing of Georgie re my favorite RS tunes. It still sounds fine 40 years later.

  35. S.... B....

Fantastic song, originally sung by the late Eddie Cochran and released in 1960 just prior to his tragic death. Rod Stewart's version is fantastic and Ronnie Wood's instrumentals are really top class.

    S.... B....

Do you know if that's kenny jones on the drum kit?

  36. M.... B....

    Great fun

  37. C.... ....

Wow, been 40 years since I heard this song. You are right...raggedy, human, and parts of it are perfect. This would never be recorded now. Thanks Rod for your old stuff.

  38. D.... D....

    great song,for sure

  39. x.... x....

    Thank You!

    Great song :)

  40. D.... ....

    Cut across Shorty, cut across.

    d.... ....

Grew up with this tune I’m 53 knew the faces as a child

  42. D.... T....

This was my (post Beatles) world when I was 16 years old. Love It!

  43. t.... ....

    syncopation on the drums.....thebest

  44. D.... B....

I love cranking this every now and then.

  45. S.... ....

the 1st 4 Stewart solo albums are him at his absolute best...he was picking great songs, writing great songs....and that attitude that's needed for this kinda rock n roll...plus the voice is right there....

    S.... ....

There has never been any more truer words than that! It's absolutely unbeatable combination interspersed with his records with the faces during the same time frame. By the time of Atlantic Crossing it was over. Rod was screwed over by the era but made a boatload of cash LOL never did reach these heights again. Songs, arrangements, and production set his voice perfectly.

  46. R.... K....

A terrific song by a great entertainer. Great oldie but goodie.

  47. E.... T....

I will never get tired of this song!

    E.... T....

    truly one of his best,,,

  48. B.... K....

Loved this song the first time I heard it way back when it was a hit.
I forgot how funky the music is. Good stuff.

    B.... K....

@Bill Knotts  the album did well but where was this released as an A side on a single? thx.

    B.... K....

@Rick Stafford Have no idea. Only heard it on the radio back around 1971.

    B.... K....

@Bill Knotts AOR station back in the day no doubt.

    B.... K....

@Rick Stafford i only remember it from the album. i could be wrong, but i don't think it was released as a single.

  49. c.... w....

One of my favorite songs - one of their best soul numbers (rod, ronnie, and the assorted gang).  Larry Brown below - stop hating so people will check out your old band - sorry I wasted those seconds of my life - you guys aren't even close to that league with no acoustical.  I hope the other band members don't agree with your comments

  50. C.... ....

Amazing how such power can come from unplugged instruments!

    C.... ....

Carlos Canales Vega There is some electric slide guitar at the end there.

  51. E.... D....

Some of the best drumming to ever be put on vinyl...

    E.... D....

    u be rite

  52. r.... b....

I am an old assed mofo  but this when Rod rocked

    r.... b....

    robt burk I heard that

    r.... b....

    You're not wrong.

  53. L.... D....

Another "turn up very fucking loud" song....Enjoy darlings.    H/T to Steven Krohn

    L.... D....

Have a nice Sunday my dear friend!

    L.... D....

You as well Dear Viviane !  ♥♥♥

  54. E.... T....

Happy 70th, Rod!  To me, you'll be forever young.  I love you.

  55. K.... K....

this is what is so great about the Internet-I heard of the death of his keyboardist today and it brought up all the memories of these songs-this music is unbelievably good.

  56. E.... H....

Gasoline Alley was by far a brilliant album.

    E.... H....

yep,it was a good one alright.

  57. V.... S....

    2 hours from LA

  58. V.... S....

how much $$ for you to be in my back yard for a concert?

  59. T.... ....

the value of this track will come in to it's own in years to come as sure as the sun shines and the river flows.

  60. J.... J....

    a favorite from the album.

  61. S.... R....

    this is a good song

  62. S.... K....

Hard to believs this is all acoustic

  63. L.... B....

Man, I loved this tune when it was popular and this album is a landmark of rock and roll history. Having said that, I had not heard this in forever and I could not help laughing at the drum sound. Man that is one awful drum sound and combined with the out of tune instruments and raggedy playing panned every which way .. wow!

    L.... B....

+Larry Brown huh??? we listening to the same fucking tune.

    L.... B....

    Larry Brown

    L.... B....

Larry Brown i always thought that he used alternate tunings. instuments can be moved a little up or down for the voice or effect.

    L.... B....

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh Rock'n roll, gotta love it!

    L.... B....

Blue notes. They did that on purpose.

  64. t.... ....

    Quittenton from Steamhammer ?

  65. E.... ....

Really?! Ok, so it's got no 'billy in it, but even so, as another poster commented, "Good grief, what's not to like?" ;-j

  66. N.... ....

So weak and unconvincing compared to the Eddie Cochran version.

    N.... ....

    NoiseAnnoys You don't know squat.

  67. n.... ....

Love your recollection. Humble for the ages - a classic.

  68. c.... ....

shorty must have had that somthing that can't be found in books. kinda like this song. kinda like this album.

  69. K.... P....

Love Mickey Waller's earthy drumming on this. And Dick Powell, the violinist, is a dream. Rod Stewart found him busking on the streets of New York. This recording is one for the ages.

  70. g.... t....

    Just so damn good!

  71. a.... ....

This was one of the "deep tracks" on latenight Top-40 AM radio in Jan/Feb 1971. Rare as all holy hell. Thank God for YouTube for making this rare material available. :)

  72. B.... M....

    Rockin´ !

  73. b.... ....

Wow. I had completely forgot this was here. Thanks for reminding me. Just awesome.

  74. r.... ....

Totally agree brother; no one has equalled this.

  75. r.... ....

    "one" not "on" lol.

  76. r.... ....

Never gets old; this would definitely be on of my desert island discs, superb. There arent enough superlatives to describe this.

  77. r.... ....

Whats happened to the original comment??????where did it go??

  78. E.... ....

At least the '1' proves that that button does work, no more testing required ☼ ;-j

  79. L.... H....

I'm 'like" #88. Really. Me and my trailer-mates had this playing over and over in the early 70's in our off-base home by the swamp outside Ft. Bragg. Heard it again for the first time in decades and just love it all over again!
What's up with the one lone outlier who punched the 'dislike' button? Good grief, what's not to like?

  80. d.... ....

    damn good tune

  81. C.... G....

... found Shorty waiting there ,,, it's you that i wanna wed !!!

  82. r.... ....

the musicality on this is incredibly cool...rock, country, folk, funk? don't know what to call it , but i love it's messiness. some music is meant to be messy, but what a full country funky sound. unique. modern day rockers my chemical romance have a full messy sound i love.

    r.... ....

    Loosey Goosey.
    It just flows.

  83. w.... ....

probably the hardest song to replicate, great sound never to be repeated, never heard anyone who could.Great Band.

  84. l.... ....

@42marisol1 Yes unlike the latter days when Rod Stewart turned into an anonymous mainstream singer.

  85. n.... ....

The Faces often had this number in their setlist and did some killer live versions of it.

  86. R.... O....

I play, and this stuff is the best. I used to play "Every Picture Tells a Story" as my Faces tune, But this is so much better.

  87. L.... ....

@shaunchesworth Check out the Faces box... great electric version closes disc two. Completely different feeling but just as effective.

  88. L.... ....

Per the Mercury LP from '70, Woody and Martin Quittenton on the acoustics, Pete Sears on bass, Mick Waller on drums and Dick Powell on violin. Woody's credited for the slide part though it's probably Sam Mitchell.

  89. m.... ....

    Crank up the volume!

  90. b.... ....

This entire album is one of the best rock and country albums that has ever been produced.
I love the way it sounds like it was recorded in someone's basement.
Rod Stewart was at his best when he was doing this material.

  91. F.... ....

    Toin it UP!!!!!

  92. F.... ....

ONe of my favorite Stewart covers.

  93. s.... ....

been waiting for this to be put up for a long time..love this song..thx el

  95. t.... ....

Gasoline Alley, best Stewart LP, along with Truth , Jeff Beck.

  96. f.... ....

I believe its Mickey Waller on drums..

  97. j.... ....
