Robinson, Tom - Cold Cold Ground Lyrics

Call me digger, I don't have no other name
Don't want no hassle next time I'm making my claim
Long ago and far away
My dad was an animal but that's okay
Hitched to the city, now I'm here to stay
Begging on the cold, cold ground

Some people cuss and kick or spit in your face
Some just slip you a quid and quicken their pace
If you were me, the roles reversed
Don't try to tell me you'd escape the curse
Every alternative's so much worse
Than begging on the cold cold ground

Beg, beg, begging
The rain keeps hammering down
Beg, beg, begging
Begging on the cold, cold ground

I got smooth white skin, so I do much better than some
Some girls mother me, some men wanna have fun
Late tonight when you're in bed
Or sat up surfing on the World Wide Web
You'll forget the beggar boy you just met
Begging on the cold, cold ground

Beg, beg, begging
The rain keeps hammering down
Beg, beg, begging
Begging on the cold, cold ground

Don't kid yourself that you're immune
The 21st Century will be here soon
Fucked in a gutter, howling at the moon
And begging on the cold, cold ground

Beg, beg, begging
Why don't you give me a pound?
Beg, beg, begging
Begging on the cold, cold ground

Am I alright? You might well ask
A sop to your conscience as you walk on past
You sad motherfuckers can kiss my arse
I'm begging on the cold, cold ground

  24. T.... G....

Grandmas funeral today. I’ve been estranged for a decade. My 91 year old grandpa finally got to meet his granddaughter. We reap what we sow...

    T.... G....

kind of weird. im a bit "estranged" from my grandmother too these days, she's 84 or thereabouts, and we were once very close when i was in my early 20s and my teen years, and i actually tried to get her to listen to Tom Waits once all those years ago. She lost her mind after my grandfather died first, 9 years ago now. I feel bad for her, but it seems impossible to fix now...

  25. R.... C....

Even today, Tom plus The Accordion = Lethal x

  26. u.... ....

Tom is life, love, hate, death and rumination.

    u.... ....

And a dose of brilliant madness.

  27. A.... P....

    Power full song wooow
    long life Tom

  28. R.... ....

super super track on a super super album

  29. c.... ....

    America's real Poet Laureate

  30. R.... G....

“... Give Me a Winchester rifle and a whole box of shells ...” Tom gives Us a little “ Lonesome Dove”and a snatch from a Mexican pop song ... a taste of all that is Eternal ,as well as all that We so desperately try to hold onto , but which escapes Us anyway ... Many a night I have wandered the streets searching for something as human and as spiritual as this song

  31. R.... ....

This sounds so upbeat for such a depressing song.

  32. i.... e....

    magician

  33. L.... R....

Tom's reverie about his fight with creativity, coolness and alcoholism, a cold cold mistress as well.

  34. J.... H....

  53. S.... C....

    Tom Waits - Rocks<3...Light & Love...

  54. J.... F....

    Masterpiece

  55. M.... H....

Tobacco Road.... Fuck your shallow scum and their beloved "veterans" and the illegal wars that killed them.
    We piss on them.
This song speaks to the thinking living who would prefer death mainly due to the shitty world that those illegal wars have left them. Think about it, boy.

  56. p.... m....

one of my all time faveourite artists of all time amazing song love all of toms music

  57. H.... L....

i saw tom live in oakland in 1996. it was really something i'll never forget.

    S.... S....

I saw him in Kansas City in the mid 1970s--still one of the highlights of my life!

  62. M.... B....

Dont compare tom to anyone else, he is the king

    M.... B....

    THANKYOU VERY MUCH
    NUFF SAID 💥🌎🚬❤😁

    M.... B....

It´s Tom Waits. It is not the usual music industry.

  63. H.... D....

A Brian Fallon gig brought me here

  64. L.... D....

Wish tom was my daddy 😐

  65. J.... M....

    Wonderful!

  66. h.... ....

This is where he hits something 10/10. The snapshots of inner lives here - sadness, desolation, mounting anger - who would take that kind of stuff on? (Yeah, there are some - your nominations pls (he said vainly). Loudon W III wd be one of mine, different mental territory tho'). But you're absolutely drawn in. Enough.

  67. C.... F....

Cold, cold ground brought me here.

  68. D.... ....

31 people have very bad taste in music.

  69. G.... G....

"Make a pile of Trump Towers n burn 'em all down" - LMAO this morning. Thanks, Tom.

    G.... G....

its a pile of Trunk Tires, not Trump Towers

    G.... G....

@TheThompsonGunner you're too picky for an Osborne

    G.... G....

Konstantins Jaunzems I get that a lot

  70. M.... N....

"When the road's washed out we pass the bottle around, and wait in the arms of the cold, cold ground...bring a bible and a rope, bring a whole box of rebel and a bar of soap."

  71. D.... ....

Did he say "make piles of Trump Towers and burn them all down"?

  72. C.... N....

I was just trying to explain Tom Waits to a foreigner... and basically I was saying that while most Americans don't know his music, some of the best musicians that most Americans know (like Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen) DO know his music, and know it very well... a weird paradox...

    C.... N....

bruce springsteen is not all that good, SO commercial, not even in the same sentence as bob Dylan pleeze

    C.... N....

For people who don't know who he is, I like to say he's probably your favorite artist's favorite artist

  73. R.... C....

Red Cadillac And A Black Moustache

    R.... C....

An ingrown toenail and a blustery day.

    R.... C....

A jar full of nothing and a spent ticket .

  74. S.... b....

That's funny...the first time I heard this song was on Homicide...I ended up calling the production set (got the number from the network), and those guys were amazingly cool, told me who it was and even named the albumn. Rock on Desleigh

  75. l.... ....

it's a cold cold ground ppl

  76. A.... Z....

I actually get off to millennials who never heard of Tom Waits. Think of it as my "ass pennies". (UCB reference to all you bosom suckles.)

  77. J.... ....

    This is magic... That accordian

  78. T.... C....

    LEOLO LOZONE

  79. w.... a....

just makes me think of amy winehouse everytime

  80. A.... Z....

Absolutely sickening that this has under a million views. An amazing song from an amazing artist. Years after he has passed be prepared for the flood of comments stating "Where was this genius in my time? I was born in the wrong time period." and "I'm only twelve but I love this music." The irony being Tom Waits has been here the whole time here "waiting" for you.

  81. J.... J....

"make a pile of Trump tours and burn em all down"....i like that.

  82. t.... ....

Saw him on TV doing a small skit: I would walk it with him.

  83. S.... H....

How often i forget that the cold ground is at the finish line.......

  84. K.... ....

00:01 I thought windows gave me an error

  85. V.... ....

When I get a feeling or an emotion that's to difficult for me to express it, I usually find that Tom Waits has found a way to put it in a song. This song reminds me of my childhood home and growing up on a rural route.

  86. L.... G....

amo esta cancion casi tanto como amo a Leolo

  87. S.... M....

Sometime in the late fall - last 2 weeks of October to the first 2 weeks of November - find a good, old graveyard on an overcast day. Bring along your phone, headphones, and a bottle of whatever hooch you prefer - I usually go for brandy or cognac in this case - and give this a listen in the cold weather. It's magic.

    S.... M....

What you said was pure poetry my friend . Cheers ! The fainthearted should simply abstain.

    S.... M....

    thats style

    S.... M....

Erskine Caldwell is smiling. a little bit of funny a little bit of rage.

    S.... M....

Tobacco Road go preach somewhere else you commie bitch

    S.... M....

Gonna, thanks. Cheap tequila or Fireball

  88. y.... y....

Tom Waits sure has a lot of songs about being dead

  89. A.... M....

Conor Oberst should cover this song.

  90. E.... A....

This hits like a punch in the gut.

    E.... A....

Saw this live in 88 at Massey Hall, Frank's Wild Years tour anyway. Feeling good and feeling shitty
    at the same time.

  91. R.... N....

One of the greatest songs !! From one of the Greatest in this Rock-Music-Universum !!!
You are innocent when you dream !!!
Thank for the music and the beautiful feelings over the years !!!!

  92. S.... S....

Bei diesem Lied muss ich immer an "Léolo" denken, ein französisch-kanadischer Film von 1992. Schön, wild, bedrückend und tief - halt wie Tom Waits ...

  93. N.... ....

    homicide life on the street!!!!
