Robert Johnson - Sweet Home Chicago Lyrics

Oh
Baby, don't you want to go
Oh
Baby, don't you want to go
Back to the land of California
To my sweet home Chicago

Oh
Baby, don't you want to go
Oh
Baby, don't you want to go
Back to the land of California
To my sweet home Chicago

Now one and one is two
Two and two is four
I'm heavy loaded baby
I'm booked, I gotta go
Cryin', baby
Honey, don't you want to go
Back to the land of California
To my sweet home Chicago

Now two and two is four
Four and two is six
You gon' keep on monkeyin' 'round here friend-boy,
You gon' get your
Business all in a trick
But I'm cryin', baby
Honey, don't you want to go
Back to the land of California
To my sweet home Chicago

Now six and two is eight
Eight and two is ten
Friend-boy, she trick you one time
She sure gon' do it again
But I'm cryin', baby
Honey, don't you want to go
Back to the land of California
To my sweet home Chicago

I'm goin' to California
From there to Des Moines, Iowa
Somebody will tell me that you
Need my help someday, cryin'
Hey, hey
Baby, don't you want to go
Back to the land of California
To my sweet home Chicago

I am the only person alive today who knows how and what you must do to go to the crossroads. Yes Robert Johnson did sell his soul to the devil and made his deal at the crossroads, but in doing so he was only in search of acceptance and comfort in life ,

Keith Richards believed for years that there was someone accompanying Mr Johnson on these numbers and then became frightened to know that it was just his hands at work.

And somehow, a man barely recognized in his time, with only a handful of recordings shaped the history of music for the next century..

And I’m 60 and we played Foghat’s version of this. I think most other versions were kind of lame as far as the bass line is concerned. Mr Johnson was a pioneer in his own right but he was also quite a mathematician. Lol!!

  53. S.... T....

I once was at a concert with Willie Dixon and Johnny Shines and had the opportunity to talk with them. Dixon was very friendly and we spoke for an hour. Shines didn’t say so much but I asked him what he thought about Cream’s version of Crossroads, and he said it was OK. Then he said; You know, I played with Robert Johnson. I couldn’t believe it. I spoke with a guy who once actually knew Johnson well. It was too much, I could’t find out what to ask.

  74. D.... H....

Lonesome Dave from FOGHAT was great with this song

    D.... H....

    yes girl

  75. S.... B....

A big part of the lines Johnson plays are of course skill, but also genetics. That famous picture of him with cigarette in mouth shows a pretty good image of his left hand and you can get a pretty good idea of just how big his hands were. With mitts like that you could imagine the kinds of chord shapes you can make.

  76. A.... ....

This song makes me sad because it makes me think of the 30s and how black people were treated and how hard things were back then.

    A.... ....

    yes the slavery sad face

  77. A.... L....

To those on this post who claim that blues songs like this didn't create the genre we now know as Rock n', Roll, predominantly, but that country music, likewise, equally contributed-NEED TO GET A GRIP. Country music (a musical form with heavy country blues influence) only influenced those musicians during the 50's that had country music as a part of their cultural up bringing-namely white artists of the time, with Chuck Berry being the possible exception. This country/hillbilly, rock hybrid had a name: ROCKABILLY. Sure enough, one can say it was a type of Rock N' Roll; but that's all it was: A TYPE, just like DOO WOP was a type. The rest of it had, including those songs with country/hillbilly influences-a direct pipeline to the kind of blues you're presently listening to, as well as the Rhythm & Blues and Jump Blues, during the Post WW2 period. Elvis, when he was being interviewed while stationed in Germany, admitted as much. (Interestingly enough, the first recorded Rock concert [The Moondog Coronation Ball, 1952], consisted of on all black lineup, playing the type of "Race Music" listed, such as Rhythm and Blues, and Jump Blues. On another note, 2/3 of the audience was black as well.) So again folks, get a grip, and stop distorting the historical record.

  79. C.... H....

He plays guitar amazingly. It's a pity he died so young

  80. C.... C....

I learned of Robert Johnson from a jazz history class in college, and ever since, i've appreciated blues on a whole new level.

  85. G.... D....

So, where's the ripping blues licks? This is better than Clapton, Hendrix? I don't think so.

    G.... D....

If it's flashy guitar leads you're interested in, try Blind Willie Johnson for some amazing slide guitar.

Robert Johnson was a great guitar player, but not in the same way Hendrix and Clapton were.

    G.... D....

@frantruff Ok. I will check him out. Thanks.

  86. L.... F....

A lot folks don't that Don Law, who produced Robert Johnson's sessions, also produced many Johnny Cash records when cash left Sun Records
