Robbins, Marty - Just Before The Battle, Mother Lyrics

Just before the battle, Mother,
I am thinking most of you
While upon the fields we're watching,
With the enemy in view

Comrades, brave, are round me lying
Filled with thoughts of home and God
For well they know that on the morrow
Some will sleep beneath the sod

Farewell, Mother, you may never
Press me to your heart again
But, oh, you'll not forget me, Mother
If I'm numbered with the slain

Hark, I hear the bugels sounding
'Tis the signal for the fight
Now may God protect us, Mother
As he ever does the right

Hear the battle cry of freedom
How it swells up in the air
Yes, we'll rally round the standard
Or we'll perish nobly there

Farewell, Mother, you may never
Press me to your heart again
But, oh, you'll not forget me, Mother
If I'm numbered with the slain

Robbins, Marty Just Before The Battle, Mother Comments
  1. M.... A....

Tohle já miluji. Vždycky z toho mi jde mráz po zádech, ta píseň má obrovský náboj a sílu. Krása. Díky Marty!

  2. M.... ....

For some reason i think the melody reminds a bit of another civil war melody; "Lorena." And both are very powerfull and beautifull melodies...

    M.... ....

My daughter's name is Lorena Marie. I named her after that melody from the Civil War.

I'm 85 years old and remember that we had this song and played it on our Victrola (windup record player) when I was a youngster and my Mother sang along with it. I'm pleased to find it on U-tube. Marty Robbins is superb!

    R.... S....

Maybe your mother had heard the song, sung by some old Civil war veterans when she was young. Back then it still was possible to shake hands and talk with Civil war veterans..

  4. M.... K....

A new one for me. It's just so beautifully done by Marty Robbins. Any idea who wrote it

  5. D.... D....

Hi Tarquin, I was in the UK some time ago, pitty I did not know you back then. Thank you so much for your postings. I thought I was the greatest Marty Robbins fan ever but you are more clued up than I. He was the greatest, the voice, the lyrics, the message,so soothing, so true. I can and do listen to him all day long. You were so fortunate to have met him in person.

tarquin45, another Marty song I never knew existed. Thank you very much. I did cd in a tribute to Marty and I'm playing on anoither that will probably be called "Return To The Gunfighter". I've been told I sound similar, which is a real fine, since he's my main infl;uence. God bless.

my mother used to sing this song back when i was a child in the 50s and it makes me remember how she always said it would be over her dead body that i went into the service. I think it must have been very hard on her when i joined the Army in 1966, against her pleading.

  12. J.... B....

the song that President Lincoln and "Bobby Lee" would not let their soldiers sing while gathered around a campfire.  Workedat the Ryman Auditorium, selling peanuts and popcorn in the crowd, when Marty had a crossover hit;  and when I was old enough to go to a prom had me a 'white sportcoat !"   Lincoln said:..don't play that song ...gives too many soldiers ..."happy feet".  The song never caught on in Nashville butthe stars of the Opry sneaked out the back of the Ryman and down to Tootsies Orchard Lounge to drink a beer between performances.  Never could get a copy of Willie, Ray Price, Johnny Cash,  etc. celebrating tootsies orchard lounge with a ribaldditty that was underground in Nashville.      Daddy Bee

Thanks so much, it has dipped in and out of my life for as long as I can remember Thanks for letting me know it was a civil song.

  14. M.... N....

A very moving civil war song. It is dedicated to all mothers who have lost their children in battle.

    M.... N....

+MaryJo Neyer we sons and brothers cry to

  15. J.... B....

This is the most poignant and powerful war protest song I ever head, although it was not intended to be that. And sung by one of the great voices of all times. Oh, if only more people could hear, really HEAR, this song and understand its implications.

    J.... B....

It's not protesting, it's just about war.

    J.... B....

If it was protest, some hippie would be running away with a full diaper.

  16. R.... F....

Words cannot describe that voice,a gift from God  I am hearing for the first time ever this balled. It breaks my heart to think of all the brave men who died for this great country

  17. J.... L....

    Thee is none better...

  18. a.... ....

Still here getting my daily fix of Marty,5 years on

  19. r.... ....

The song was written by George F. Root who also write "The Battle-Cry of Freedom", "Tramp, Tramp, Tramp", "The Vacant Chair" and others. It is written as though it came from an actual soldier but Root was a songwriter.

  20. A.... C....

wonderful..a very moving sing and so beautifully done .

  21. K.... D....

This was a song written by a soldier in The Civil War.Marty sings it superbly from his heart.Just listen to the feeling in his gifted voice.Masterful.Thanks.

    K.... D....

Ever heard of the song "Hobo's Lullaby" by Goebel Reeves and one of Woody Guthrie's favorite songs. Woody's son Arlo even titled one of his albums with this classic song. Reeves took the music from the song you're listening to now.

That's probably because it wasn't released in Marty's lifetime unfortunately. It first showed up on a German Bear Family album called 'Just Me And My Guitar.'
