Robbins, Marty - Jimmy Martinez Lyrics

The story began in Renosa
A village in old Mexico
A girl and a Mexican soldier
Were sweethearts, a long time ago
They made big plans for a wedding
The town of Renosa would go
And there would see Jimmy Martinez
Married to Sarah Sero
Oh-oh-oh

One day there came a message
It said that Jimmy must go
As Jimmy was leavin' Renosa
To fight at the Alamo
He never returned to Renosa
The story's been told and retold
How Jimmy the Mexican soldier
Died at the Alamo
Oh-oh-oh

Jimmy's last letter to Sarah
Began with a message like this
Oh dear one, how sweet is the memory
The memory of our parting kiss
I send my heart in this letter
I pray to the one up above
Oh Sarah, don't ever forget me
Stay just as pure as the dove
Oh-oh-oh

I'm like the dove in your window
It's chosen just one mate for life
And you are the one I have chosen
The one that I want for my wife
He never returned to Renosa
The story's been told and retold
How Jimmy the Mexican soldier
Died at the Alamo
Oh-oh-oh

Sarah refused to believe them
She prayed for Jimmy's return
And there ever night in her window
A small little candle would burn
Years turned her dark hair to silver
She prayed for Jimmy so long
Then one night the village was saddened
The light in her window was gone
Oh-oh-oh

What a wonderful song, this marvelous performer sings for everyone , both sides of all stories! Just the best , the best ever, and here I keep finding more and more some I haven't heard for decades , other that are new to me. But you can never mistake the greatest story teller with the clear clean voice , and you can understand every word.

This the way he had his background singers with excellent really good Harmony the higher the middle part and the lower part the three part harmony was very nice and you could really say, much like Elvis had which with his Jordanaires in the background doing there good harmonies and the way they sounded really smooth to with Elvis, Marty Robbins and his background singers this was his Jordanaires which was those two guys in the background what a great Trio they were featuring Marty of course I feel personally that Marty Robbins was even better than Elvis as a singer very good performer too, my personal favorite don't get me wrong I think Elvis is more electrifying onstage definitely an excellent good singer but I think Marty was the better overall performer and singer the quality-wise of his voice I think overall Marty had the edge.

Something that is old IS something that is new..I've hear lots of Marty tunes.. This is a tune I Have not heard this one before. I really really like country ballads. Reading reaching Billboard Hot only 51 & only 24 on the Country chart. So very underrated. So Sad

My mom gave me this name as a newborn and I always hated it until My boss played this song for me the other day and after 56 years I love my name.If my mom had ever played this song for me I would have loved this name as I was growing up but sadly I was adopted at age 2 and although moved back when I was 13 for a couple of years yet I still had never heard this song untill this past Monday.Thank you David for giving this beautiful gift of a song to me.I just hate that I had to wait so long to appreciate my name...Renosa Gayle (my mom didn't know how to spell Reynosa correctly) it was the summer of 1961 and was my mom's favorite song.Thank you Moma, I didn't know how special it was

    G.... W....

    your mum called you jimmy?

    G.... W....

Ha ha ha ha too funny. These coments are frequently written so badly that one has to wonder what the meaning was in the first place. Thanks for the laugh Karl. Brief and to the point. @karl Kruger

    G.... W....

Gayle White, WOW my mother heard this song when she was in high school and in 1963 when I was born she gave me the name of Reynosa. She too did not know how to spell it, so she looked it up on a map. She gave me Ann as a middle name saying I had one unusual/difficult name and one simple name.
She hadn't heard the song since high school, I found the song bout 6 months ago and played it for her... Funny thing is, Jimmy Martinez love interest was name Sarah and that is my mother's name, (Ann is her middle name, so her and I have that in common). Also like you I was not fond of my name Reynosa, got picked on as a kid and discriminated against as an adult. Mom said I could always change my name, but no, that is what my mother wanted to name me and I do like it now. Since one of my college professors did not like calling me Reynosa, she shortened it to Rey. Since then I have had many aliases over the years. Currently I go by Reyann or just Ray.

  22. S.... S....

What an unparalleled voice! What a charming human being to give space in his art to embrace his Mexico neighbors in dozens or more songs! In America the beautiful has been good people in all times, despite its government on the turn.

    S.... S....

Sergio you are so white that your ancestors are most likely from europe. NO one turned on mexicans. We just want legal immigration I am of that heritage but American first bc I was born here. Don't bring politics into it bc I can give you an ear full. Mary Robbins did not marry a mexican he just wrote great ballads. Dont add more than there is.You need to listen to the Ballas of the Alamo. Marty Robbins praised the heroes of the Alamo which were Americans.
