Robbins, Marty - Ballad Of The Alamo Lyrics

In the southern part of Texas
In the town of San Antone
There's a fortress all in ruins that the weeds have overgrown
You may look in vain for crosses and you'll never see a-one
But sometimes between the setting and the rising of the sun
You can hear a ghostly bugle
As the men go marching by
You can hear them as they answer
To that roll call in the sky.

Colonel Travis, Davy Crockett, and a hundred eighty more
Captain Dickinson, Jim Bowie
Present and accounted for.

Back in 1836, Houston said to Travis
"Get some volunteers and go
Fortify the Alamo."
Well the men came from Texas
And from old Tennessee
And they joined up with Travis
Just to fight for the right to be free.

Indian scouts with squirrel guns
Men with muzzle-loaders
Stood together, heel and toe
To defend the Alamo.

"You may ne'er see your loved ones,"
Travis told them that day
"Those who want to can leave now
Those who fight to the death let 'em stay."

In the sand he drew a line
With his army sabre
Out of a hundred eighty five
Not a soldier crossed the line
With his banners a-dancin'
In the dawn's golden light
Santa Anna came prancing
On a horse that was black as the night.

Sent an officer to tell
Travis to surrender
Travis answered with a shell
And a rousing rebel yell
Santa Anna turned scarlet
"Play deguello!" he roared
"I will show them no quarter
Every one will be put to the sword!"

One hundred and eighty five
Holding back five thousand
Five days, six days, eight days, ten
Travis held and held again
Then he sent for replacements
For his wounded and lame
But the troops that were coming
Never came, never came, never came...

Twice he charged and blew recall
On the fatal third time
Santa Anna breached the wall
And he killed 'em, one and all
Now the bugles are silent
And there's rust on each sword
And the small band of soldiers...

Lie asleep in the arms of the Lord...

In the southern part of Texas
Near the town of San Antone
Like a statue on his pinto rides a cowboy all alone
And he sees the cattle grazing where a century before
Santa Anna's guns were blazing and the cannons used to roar
And his eyes turn sorta misty
And his heart begins to glow
And he takes his hat off slowly...

To the men of Alamo.

To the thirteen days of glory
At the siege of Alamo...

Texas was stolen by the US to Mexicans by force. That was first Spanish land, afterwards Mexican's. A bunch of adventurers und thieves stole that land, by using foul play and tricks. Shame on you US anglo-saxons thieves and shame on the Mexicans who never knew how to defend the land they inherited from Spain. Shame as well on the fucking Masonry guilty of all this mess. You got never Glory but shame instead.

correct. also the white slave owners in the parts of texas that were under Mexican rule decided to secede from mexico after mexico abolished slavery so they could continue owning there slaves

Cowards, yet they marched in the castle of Chapultepec and killed cadets not even soldiers.

  16. S.... B....

Visiting the Alamo, seeing the bullet holes, and how small the church is, it's stunning that 185 could hold out for 13 days against such an overwhelming force.

  17. S.... ....

I may not be Texan but that spirit of fighting for freedom carries on in my heart and in many others. My hats off to you brave 185 men. May you always rest in peace. REMEMBER THE ALAMO!

  18. C.... D....

A slightly different version to the one I am familiar with (just a word or two altered and a slightly different musical arrangement) but still a great song. Going to listen to "Big Iron" now..........

  19. A.... S....

And now the Alamo is under threat again... look up the $450 million 'Reimagine' plan already underway. It's an insult to these brave men, and all of us living in San Antonio today. Their gravestone, the 'Spirit of Sacrifice' Cenotaph, is set to be broken down and moved off the Alamo footprint just after Christmas.

Interesting fact: of those who's nationality is known, more Brits fought at the Alamo than Texans. And more Europeans fought than Americans. One Brit had fought at Waterloo. Legend has it he left early... He knew what was coming and had earnt his retirement.
The battle was in reality a victory for the Mexicans who completely out fought the "rebels" but it was made in to a rally cry like dien bien Phu, Thermopylae, isandlwana etc.

This past Sept my wife and i took a road trip and one of our stops was to visit the Alamo . waited 50 years to finnally see it. I was not disappointed at all but very greatly moved. I stood outside the front of the church for a bit and thanked the Lord for the opportunity and the men who fought there.

    A.... J....

@Deutsches Afrika Korps It is a fact that they fought for a right to own slaves, though. Mexico abolished slavery and Southerners migrated there kept bringing in slaves.

    A.... J....

@Deutsches Afrika Korps Maybe, but I'm not wrong. The primary reason for the Texas revolution is that Mexico banned slavery but American immigrants refused free them

  48. E.... C....

That you are adorable Americans, the few moments in which you have had honor you exalt them as if they were an incredible feat, I do not say that this bad, but sometimes you forget that these achievements are nothing but small compared to the deeds of the Alcazar, the site of Baler, the blockhouse of death ... Do not be confused with what I mean, I am nobody to talk about the heroic defenders of the Alamo but that does not mean that it is a military deed like many that already have forgotten in their countries

  49. T.... T....

The "Texans" who died at the Alamo were from : Tenn., VT, KT, Penn., Miss., NY., Ill, NH., ML., Ark., LA., MS., Georgia., Ala., Ohio., Conn., R.I.N.C., S.C., England, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and Mexico. They were Americans and freedom loving people from other countries. So not only do many states have heroes who died defending the Alamo , but so do England, Ireland, Scotland , Germany, and Mexico.

  84. P.... W....

Great version of this song. Should have used him for the movie. Speaking of movie. John waynés movie was the best. Not only his money, but he put his hear, and soul into this picture. It was terrific, because he had a vision, and a belief. Movies were so much better from 30s to 80s. With some exceptions of course. Tombstone, Titanic, late 90s, godless, Gettysburg, God’s and generals, etc.

  85. P.... S....

Immagine commanding 185 men, saying "yall are probabaly gona die, those who wish to leave may leave" and not a man steps back... may god rest all your surly souls

    P.... S....

Yin the Great actually only one man left and that’s Moses rose

    P.... S....

@shiftyguggs24 now was it cowardly the way he left or did he have a good reason?

    P.... S....

Yin the Great well the story of Moses rose was during the 13 day siege. Colonel Travis drew a line in the sand with his army sword. He gathered the 185 men and told everyone if you want to stay and fight Cross the line. He did this because Santa Anna ordered his men to play “el deguello” which meant once he took the fort he will allow no prisoners and because colonel tracks and The defenders knew that no reinforcements were arriving and knew there chances of survival were low but surpisingly 184 men walked across the line in the sand except for two people Jim Bowie “who was carried across cause he was sick” and Moses rose. Moses rose left. Morse rose was old at the time in his 50s he was a French Jew immigrant. Illiterate and actually served with under Napoleon back in Europe then immigrated to Texas. Years after the Alamo he told his story and when people asked he simply said that he “wasn’t ready to die” and wanted to live to tend to his family. Some people call it cowardly I personally don’t. Moses rose see combat his whole life and knew the price of war. I mean most the of the people that called him a coward never seen combat or never felt what it feels like to go and kill someone. So it’s up to you to decide if he’s a coward or not.

    P.... S....

@shiftyguggs24 oh good to know, and i am completely inclined to agree that thats not cowardly, thanks for the lesson sir
