Rivers, Johnny - Tunesmith Lyrics
Married to the road, there's no other way to say it
Baby found out quite early in the game
That I belong to my songs, so she chose not to play it
Now I walk down the street and I hear them call my name
Give me your laughter, give me your tears
Tunesmith, tunesmith, sing me a song
But who sings a song for the tunesmith?
Who sings a song for the tunesmith?
She could have changed my mind if anyone could do it
That's why I know I'll always be this way
And now that I've got fame, I find there's nothing to it
I remember how I left her when I hear the people say
Give me your laughter, give me your tears
Tunesmith, tunesmith, sing me a song
But who sings a song for the tunesmith?
Who sings a song for the tunesmith?
This hotel room is all I own
Now that all my friends are gone
All alone at the break of day
I still can hear them say
(Tunesmith, tunesmith, sing me a song)
Give me your laughter, give me your tears
(Tunesmith, tunesmith, sing me a song)
But who sings a song for the tunesmith?
Tell me who sings a song for the tunesmith?
Tunesmith, tunesmith, sing me a song
Give me your laughter, give me your tears
Tunesmith, tunesmith, sing me a song
But who sings a song for the tunesmith?
Yeah, who sings a song for the tunesmith?

The Great-Great, Marty Paich arranged & orchestrated all of Johnny's best albums. ----------------------WolfSky9
" Rewind" is a Masterpiece. I plAyed it at least 1000 times, during '68 & '69. ------------WolfSky9, 71 y/o , soon to be 72 y/o
I used to listen to this album every night back in the 70s while living at my moms house. Sad memories!
people are people and love is love
Close the door and open a window
Played this album over and over in 1967. A friend had been killed and it always reminds me of that sad time.".
his best "album" !
you are the tunesmith
At first blush it seems POP, and mundane. COOL! Great lead cut! But for those few of us who communicate via the Cosmos, ( tuned-in and receiving) NOT projecting and wholly involved in our 3-D entanglement, in this earthly realm, its profound, other-dimensional, higher plane of existence 'essence' is cryptic but obvious, ...concurrently. ♥ PEACE, ... No, I'm not HIGH through better chemistry of humankind, ..haven't done any sh*t since May of 1988. Haha . . *It's just that I'm not ..erm... from around here. :P
Jimmy was a fantastic writer! Johnny and Glen(Campbell) did a great job interpreting them..
#hello😎👉 #Johnny #Rivers o cara é #Show #inimitável... ✍️ 🎸🎷🎼🎶🎵🍃✴️🎸
Johnny debuted this song at Monterey Pop in June 1967. It brought down the house, but then it was never released as a single. It takes me back.
wow, wished I had been a couple of years older I would have been there!!...wonder if there is a 'live" recording of it?....have no idea who at the record company didn't think this would have been a major hit for Rivers and webb!!??
Actually, it was, a few months after the album debuted, but the single didn't get a lot of airplay, so it went unnoticed.
hello😎👉Johnny Rivers o fenômeno na música internacional 🎸👌👏👏🍃🎶🎵👊👊👊👊
Really beautiful oldies tune
Really beautiful song . . . period.
He makes me FEEL. I forgot after a while how important that is but his music brought me back to really feeling life! He probably has no idea how many people he has affected in such a positive way❤️
Johnny should have released this as a single. I believe it would have gone to no. 1 on the charts, but of course we will never know.
+77thesnake you won't believe but this was released as a single in the Philippines when the rewind album came out. it still reminds me of the little town where I grew up.
+santorio55 hey thanks for the info. I did not know that. This is maybe my all time fav Rivers tune. Johnny's been my favorite singer for 40 plus years. He long over due for induction into the Rock and Roll hall of fame.
+77thesnake I agree with you. Johnny Rivers and his music were there to make me feel easy during difficult times.
It WAS a single HIT! Don't remember if it was high up, on the charts. I bought the 45 RPM single, just days after I first heard it! Have a huge stash of old hippie era 45s. Collected them, bought new, for about .. erm....too many years! Haha . . Peace, ..
@Robert Whitlock never cracked the top 10 (the top 25 didn't exist back then).
If you like rewind, check out 1968's Realization, my favorite JR album.....
Realization and Rewind were the two albums of Johnny's that I bought. Love the songs on them.
@Lynn Lobliner Mine also have both but pretty worn out. Got me through the army great uplifting stuff.
I have this in mint-pristine stereo vinyl, but I love seeing this on YouTube, too.
JR is just terrific here!
bboucharde My vinyl of this is almost worn out. I played it every day forever. still one of my favorite albums.
Huge Johnny Rivers fan--- but I Love this by the Bards.
One of my all time Rivers favorites--glad to find it!
It's amazing that we don't have radio stations that play nothing but Johnny Rivers...he was so magnificent and his songs were majestic...this little noticed tune dwarfs everything around these days....and he made all songs sound like they were his...
Did the Fifth Dimension do this song?
They sing back up on this.
Another great Webb tune gone unnoticed, thanks for posting. Any reason to not post "Sidewalk Song/27th St.??
You're on point, Chick. Vicki Carr also recorded this song... But this version by JR is the definitive version... For me, anyway.
Did anyone else do this song around this time? I swear my memory of it sounds different in my head; seems like there was also a womans voice as well .
Background harmony, vocals.
Johnny is a MoTown dude. Probably some soulful black chicks from the Motor City.
@Robert Whitlock actually, he's Detroit, by way of NYC, by way of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
great album every song excellent.
I have tears in my eyes . . . listening to this . . . after so many years . . . just beautiful.
That's Good!!!!
This album I had the pleasure of listening to as a young kid. I babysit at 9 yrs. Listening to this during a bad Thunderstorm Scared, frightened to death, iplayed this to give me comfort all alone for 2 days.
And few know...it was written by Jimmy Webb!...whom I think was FIRST discovered by ...Johnny Rivers...
All true.
This album got me through a "Dear John" letter while at basis training in 1969.
I wonder if Johhny Rivers really knows how much joy he has brought to us with his artistry? He is a treasured voice that makes me feel, yeah, he makes me FEEL! Music doesn't get much more emotional than this, thank you Johnny Rivers.
linda música, como tudo o que JR canta....
Vikki Carr's version is better.
wonderful song! I loved it back in 1978..like it was yesterday.
loved this whole record had it and lost it
really a forgotten gem ...
