Righteous Brothers, The - Hung On You Lyrics

Girl you got me to fall in love with you
Though I'm not free to fall in love with you
Oh, baby
Why did I have to get so hung on you
Tell me
Why did I have to get so hung on you

Believe me, baby,
I didn't plan it this way
I thought I'd see you one night and
Forget you the next day

You're not the girl that I belong to
And even though I know it's wrong to
There's a little place where we can go
Where we won't run into a soul we know

Whoa, baby, baby
Well I wish I could get you out of my heart
Then I could also get you out of my life
Baby
Why did I have to get so hung on you
Tell me
Why did I have to get so hung on you

Sure I could tell you it's over and then
One day I'd call you and beg you to see me again
This is a fine mess I got myself in
And let me tell you baby, you're not helping
You know the changes I'm going through
And still you look at me the way you do

Cause you got me to fall in love with you
Though I'm not free to fall in love with you
Baby, baby
Why did I have to get so hung on you
I want to know
Why did I have to get so hung on you

Righteous Brothers, The Hung On You Comments

i loved this song and was a big Bill Medley fan and bought the 45. the radio stations seemed to stop playing it and it started slipping in the charts. but the dj's had turned the record over and the rest is history. the best Unchained Melody recording ever, no disrespect to earlier versions.

    b.... ....

Many radio stations were playing both sides during the summer of '65. When Unchained Melody gained traction, Hung On You was off the air. The rest is history.

There's a song - if not a memorable one - hidden in all that reverberation. I can see why DJs flipped to the quieter B-side. Spector overdid those knobs. This was not among his best Righteous Brothers productions. ("Just Once in My Life" still takes the cake.)

I miss this music. A great song by terrific singers.

This was the SureShot on WMCA New York 6/30/65. It peaked at #23 on 7/14 and then for the next three weeks while stalled at #26, WMCA played both sides, Hung On You and Unchained Melody. On 8/11, Hung On You was off the playlist while Unchained Melody went up to #17, peaking at #4 for two weeks, 9/1 and 9/8. WABC never played Hung On You. They didn't get on Unchained Melody until 8/3. A lost Righteous Brothers track, but still a good one. They don't make 'em like this anymore!

    f.... ....

Just goes to show you that records went to airplay first on WMCA all the time

  8. M.... ....

Arguably their finest moment, bar none. Absolute, utter perfection.

  9. A.... C....

The best Phil Spector produced track with The Righteous Brothers, together with Just Once In My Life

  10. D.... W....

We just miss this caliber of music. Feel bad for people that didn't get to live this era musically.

  11. q.... ....

Without doubt my favourite Righteous Brothers song.

    q.... ....

Well "Unchained Melody" is far ahead from this one according to me.

  12. B.... ....

On this day in 1965 {August 11th} the Righteous Brothers performed "Hung On You" on the ABC-TV program 'Shindig!'...
At the time the song was at #50 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; four days later on August 15th it would peak at #47 {for 1 week} and it stayed on the chart for 7 weeks...
At the time of this appearance on 'Shindig!'; the record's flip-side, "Unchained Melody", was at #6 on the Top 100...
    R.I.P. Jimmy O’Neill {Shindig’s host, 1940 – 2013}…

Just discovered this track & absolutely love it. Pure class.

cracking track..I DARE A GOLD RADIO STATION IN THE UK PLAY THIS

  17. R.... J....

I suppose that Phil, Carole and Gerry got paid royalties on the sale of this 45 no matter which side got more airplay.  But by the 80s, radio DJs didn't have a choice in the matter, with the designated single on both sides of the record.  Most stations by then were playing music on tape carts. For the few stalwarts that held out for playing 45s in the 80s, the same song on both sides was almost a necessity, as record companies opted for cheap styrene instead of vinyl for the pressing of 45s.  Those styrene records developed cue burn fast!

    R.... J....

@Russ Johnson Like after one play. RSO was famous for that. So was RCA. Columbia just got clicks and pops but no cue burn.

  18. T.... G....

    holy shit

A Much Better Song Than Unchained Melody

    9/17/1945 "RIP"

  21. m.... m....

Bobby Who? Hatfield is dead. Is it a friend of yours?

  22. m.... m....

I play it over and over when I'm in the mood.

    m.... m....

This song says a lot to those who've gone down this road .
    Will haunt you forever.

  23. M.... L....

great song....did get some airplay where I was raised outside of Buffalo , NY....one of my favorite songs.

  24. p.... ....

The ending trading of the single word "why" gets me every time. I would like to know if that was part of the original lyric or did Phil, or Bill, or Bobby, or Jack, or Larry, or any of them come up with the idea to ad lib the end? Oh to have been a fly on the WALL OF SOUND !!

    p.... ....

That was just Bill and Bobby. It was their 'thing'. I doubt they even discussed it.

  25. J.... Z....

A shame, really a great song. I was going through some rough teenaged love at the time, so this hit home.

  26. M.... B....

This is on the "Icon" comp Universal put out recently!

  27. B.... K....

In 1965 this was magic ... it still is. My sister and Bobby are singing this now. I can't wait to hear them ...

  28. g.... ....

As great as this is (and it IS), I really, really like Bill Medley's solo version of this song that he did with Herb Alpert & Michel Colombier.

  29. M.... B....

Another good gem which may had been a double sided hit but i used to hear that song on oldies radio in the eighties and this is top notch.

  30. J.... H....

One of the best Righteous Bros. songs ever!!!!!!

  31. l.... ....

"Time 2:40" Real time 3:37. dj's p.o.'d much into flipping? Great record - but maybe a bit too dense in texture - remember some of the Crystals' later discs -"Little boy" and the monster, inflated version of "All grown up"? Compare to Bobby Vee's roughly contemporary "Run like the devil" arranged and produced by Jack Nitzsche. Similar orchestration but a lot cleaner, smoother and more accessible ear-wise.

  32. s.... M....

This is one great song by the Righteous Bros. I never will get tired of this one. They had a lot of great hits in their time.
    Great Post
