Ricky Skaggs - Gone Home Lyrics

All of my friends that I loved yesterday
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home (they have)
The songbirds that sing in the dell seem to say
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home. (they have.)

They've joined the heavenly fold
They're walking the streets of pure gold
They left one by one as their work here was done
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home. (they have.)

Life here is lonely since they've gone before
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home (they have)
The old weeping willow that stands by the door
Sadly says (they have gone home) gone home. (they have.)

They've joined the heavenly fold
They're walking the streets of pure gold
They left one by one as their work here was done
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home. (they have.)

The trumpet will sound on that Great Judgment day
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home (they have)
We'll see all our friends that have gone on that way
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home. (they have.)

They've joined the heavenly fold
They're walking the streets of pure gold
They left one by one as their work here was done
Gone home (they have gone home) gone home. (they have...)

"Jumping" Bill Carlisle I believe wrote this wonderful piece. Bill wrote a number of good "Novelty" tunes, and performed with great energy, often getting in a little "jump" did his act, he was a great entertainer with these numbers, but with Gone Home, he hit a lasting and significant "Out of the Park", Home Run. Gone Home will in time make everyone forget those novelty tunes he wrote, this is a significant and wonderful Gospel Hymn in it's own right. While our WWII Vets deserve every recognition we can give them, this great song applies to all of us who are experiencing loss as our dear friends and loved ones one by one pass from the scene, They've Gone Home.

    D.... D....

Thank you for your informative and thoughtful comment.

  17. I.... ....

The final insult: today's Leftie SJWeenies fancy themselves as being like into these men, as they "battle Nazis" (ordinary, Conservative Americans!), and praise murderers who slaughtered ordinary concert-goers like fish in a barrel, proclaiming the victims deserved it, being "gun-toting Republicans" and all. None of them note that all those there gun toters were UNARMED, but that seems not to matter. Geez, no wonder these WWII vets are suffering new bouts of Combat Fatigue. The rest of us are beginning to suffer our first bouts!

  18. D.... 6....

From South Africa - I have listened to this song over and over - cannot help but become emotional.  Thanks Ricky and K T- love all your songs I can get hold of on Youtube.

Wonderful song but I can only hope that the newer generations remember these people and what they went through. They didn't go to the Dr to get help for post traumatic stress , they lived with it and most took their memories to the grave with them. To all veterans,,, May God Bless and thank you for your service!!!!!

  74. R.... T....

As we age this song becomes more and more a reality with each passing day.  The man who wrote this song said he left it to others to record and sing.  Now he has Gone Home as well.
Precious old song with a precious promise of hope.  I once listened to a testimony of an elderly lady.  She said when it came time for her funeral she didn't expect many people to show up for it. Reason being, she had outlived all her family and most of her friends. That testimony broke my heart when I realized there are so many old folks who don't have any of their close friends and loved ones around anymore.  No wonder so many of the older Christians are looking forward to that time of blessed reunion.

    R.... T....

Jennifer Blake I'm truly very sorry for what your father went through, and it sounds like he might have wondered the same thing. Our God is a just and merciful God who puts meaning into things and people and actions otherwise meaningless and whose mercy is infinite.

when I heard it originally I thought it was about those who have passed and gone to heaven, but you have given me a new perspective. May the Lord our God bless you in your endeavors

    R.... T....

Thank you for your reply. We do have a just and merciful God. I know my heavenly Father has his hand on this earth and all that dwell in it. I became a Christian after my father died and I now know there is a purpose in every thing. All part of Gods plan for us. God bless and keep you also. In the precious name of Jesus

    R.... T....

True words Rick.   I'm from South Africa - simply love Blue Grass.   Ricky and band are great musicians and understand how to play this music.   This song makes me long for my father in law - he would have loved this song.   Fought in Italy in WW II.

    R.... T....

Yes sir, Mr. Bill wrote heartfelt songs as well as funny ones.

    R.... T....

I am now 67. Look back to your early years and remember the following periods of your life. You will see that there were reasons for things happening. As I look back, I now see why I lost my young wife; from her being with her parents and sister in heaven, to me marrying again to a good wife that needed help with her troubles and family. She picked herself up and has made her a good life. My son is a man's man now for not relying on other's to make all decisions in life and doing it himself. He has a good wife and family now. Rely on GOD to guide you and trust his decisions, for he knows your needs, if you believe in him.

  75. H.... ....

    good on you. well done.

  87. b.... ....

Thank you for remembering them here.

  88. G.... W....

The Vietnam War was a bitter time for all of us alive then we spent a lot of time trying to figure this war out. I would like to memorialize, here, the three young men who died in that war. They came from Lyons & Muir Michigan, adjoining towns. The population combined of Lyons and Muir couldn't have been more than 900 people so I think we paid disproportionately in lives lost. The three are Terry Simon, Neil Potter and Herbert Loucks.

  89. b.... ....

Thank you for commenting; and even more so thank you for serving.

Love tat you shared this.... God Bless.

  97. b.... ....

You're welcome. My father would have never called himself a war hero either.

  98. T.... ....

Many of these men are of my dad's generation, grew up during the depression, and fought in WW2. Dad would be 98 if he was still around. I'd say he was a war hero, but he'd say no, the heroes were the ones that didn't make it back. I guess it's like the bumper sticker, "All gave some, Some gave ALL" Many thanks to all who served. And, thanks for the video!

  99. b.... ....

    You're welcome!
