Ricky Skaggs - Charlie & Johnny Reb Lyrics

Looking back at a page in time
The year was 1859
We ran deep in the souther pines
'Neath that Alabama Clay

Charlie and Johnny were brothers in blood
Nothing stronger than family love
The cotton was short and times were tough
So they went through seperate ways

Charlie moved north to work in corn
But Johnny he stayed south
And after being apart a couple of years
Civil war broke out

Well both of the brothers they were volunteers
After fighting each other for all those years
But if it came to fighting they had no fears
They had seen their share of fists

Then they got the news how it would be
The brothers had agreed to disagree
Is like taking an axe to the family tree
Never dreamed it would come to this

Charlie put on the union blue
And Johnny the rebel grey
But each one pray his brother'd live
The fight another day

As dawn was breaking on the battle field
Through the canon smoke and the foggy hills
A shot rang out from the cold blue steele
Charlie held in his shakin' hands

And after the fight while countin' the cost
There was more that day than a battle lost
When under a tree line in the moss
Charlie came upon a young man

And as he wiped the mud and blood away
It took more than his breath
'Cause the soldier in his sights that day

Sounds like an irish tune, spancill hill.

    S.... J....

I think Spancil Hill was based off of this

  5. C.... M....

One of the best versions. This manages to sing in a style and with a sentiment that the soldiers of both sides would appreciate. And that's worth a lot.

  6. a.... ....

Is this about Maryes Heights?? Oh lord, such a tragedy! For both sides. Thank god for that Angel who braved the shot and hate!

    a.... ....

    Not hate states rights

    a.... ....

    never assume. know the history

    a.... ....

was no real hate in the civil war, only a disagreement on states rights. both sides were right and both sides were wrong… in the end death was the only true winner.

The great Norman Blake also does this song -- a slower, sadder version -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JY-YotvW8s&list=PL4YraiGM4mAHUO6B-bz4TJiPv3zfNH6Ip&index=5

+hangdogit Thank you so much. I love Norman Blake and his wife, Nancy. They have a song on this album... and it's sad. The Faded Coat of Blue. I have a Civil War Playlist and an Old Timey/Mountain Music playlist if you like this type music. I will check your video out. Thanks for visiting, Moppet

    What genre is this?

    B.... C....

+Colby Hurd I've been gone about a year. So sorry to not see but not here. It's Old
Time, or Old Timey. Some call it mountain music. It's the forfather of
bluegrass and country. It's pre-Civil War. (Not this song, but the
genre). Some call it Americana but that's a "dump" genre with every
thing in it. I have an Old Time Playlist and also a Civil War playlist
if you like this type music. Heard from a musician friend that long ago,
the musicians would have to go to plantations to buy their banjos. They
were made by slaves ... that's where you got your instruments if you
    wanted a banjo.

    B.... C....

+Brandon Costner It's Old Time or Old Timey. It is the father of bluegrass and later, country. It was pre-Civil War. It's not as fast as bluegrass and never
amplified. Some call it Mountain Music. I have an Old Time Playlist and
also a Civil War Playlist if you like this type of music. It's an
    original American genre.

    B.... C....

Mr. Stoßtruppen Thanks for your help. There is a fine line and it IS the father of bluegrass. This is called Old Time or Old Timey music. It's sometimes called Mountain Music. It's pre Civil War and as I said the father of bluegrass and grandfather of country. The playing is slower than bluegrass and there is no amplification of the instruments for purists in Old Timey. It's a true American genre. (the banjos had to be made by slaves on plantations long ago. They brought their instruments from Africa. Musicians looked for the most talented makers they could find.) Thanks again, Moppet

    Traditional Appalachian

@MyMoppet52 I love this music so much, and always have. My son plays old time fiddle, banjo & guitar...
And always corrects me when I call old time bluegrass or vice versa. (I do know the difference but it's fun to aggravate him!)
Love your selection of music-subscribing! Thanks!
