Ricky Nelson - It's All In The Game Lyrics

Many a tear has to fall
But it's all in the game
All in the wonderful game that we know as love

You have words with him
And your future's lookin' dim
But these things your hearts can rise above

Once in a while he won't call
But it's all in the game
Soon he'll be there at your side with a sweet bouquet

And he'll kiss your lips
And caress you're waiting finger tips
And your hearts will fly away

I'm a Ricky Nelson fan but this version is a disgrace--Tommy Edwards rules this song

    P.... M....

Far from a disgrace...but Tommy does own that song.

  7. D.... M....

Oh, Ricky! I still get chills listening to you sing. What a gorgeous voice and such a handsome man. I still cry thinking of your terrible plane crash. I hope you are in Heaven with your family now. Love, Diane

I don't know where the attribution to Jerry Fuller comes from. The lyrics were written by Carl Sigman in 1951, and the melody is from Charles Dawes back in 1911-12. Dawes would later be Vice President of the US under Calvin Coolidge (1925-29). He was also a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, a US military general, a banker, first US budget director, Ambassador to the UK, and is known for arresting the German hyperinflation after the first World War as leader of the Dawes Commission (1924). On top of that he wrote music. Pretty fascinating guy.

I saw Ricky in 1967,at the fair in San Diego. The greatest music, Ricky was shy on stage.
Love his music, all of it.

    c.... G....

i was born on 1967 but i wish it was earlyer. the music was from the heard . not today from the money

    c.... G....

What was he wearing? And what were you wearing?

  20. m.... ....

    "COOL"...

  21. j.... ....

Laughable compared to Tommy Edwards.  Classic example of white covers of black songs.

    j.... ....

Attaboy, find a way to make a racial remark. FYI, the song isn't a "black song", it was written by a couple of white guys (Carl Sigman, Charles Dawes) and recorded by all sorts of singers, like Dinah Shore. Tommy Edwards had the best success with it, but he wasn't the first. My favorite is Nat King Cole's. Ricky Nelson's is a whole different treatment, but certainly valid.

joewhlm. LOOOL! IGNORANT REMARKS COMING FROM AN IGNORAMUS. NOT ONLY DO YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS SONG, YOU HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF MUSIC HISTORY.

WHEN SECOND CONTACT WAS MADE WITH NEGROIDS, THEY HAD ZERO MUSIC, AND LIMITED SPEECH. WHITE MEN INTRODUCED THEM TO MUSIC. FOR 500 YEARS THEY HAD DULL DROLL EXPRESSION. NOW, EVEN WITH AN AVERAGE OF 25% WHITE ADMIXTURE, THEY HAVE UNREFINED PHRASING, LACKLUSTER INTONATION, AND LITTLE FINESSE.

POOR LYRICISTS, IRREGULAR MUSICIAL PERFORMERS, AND VULGAR STAGE PRESENCE ARE COMMON TO THE NEGROID. FAULTS TO OVERCOME. BUT WITHIN THE WHITE MUSICAL WORLD, SOME MANAGED PASSABLY.

AS WHITES ARE MUSIC ITSELF, IT WAS AS NATURAL TO THEM AS BREATHING. AND BEING CREATIVE, THEY CONTINUED TO DEVELOP THAT WHICH WAS NECESSARY TO KEEP MUSIC BLOSSOMING AND CLIMBING TO HIGHER AND HIGHER STANDARDS.

OTHERS BENEFITED FROM THEIR INGENUITY AND RICH CULTURE. SOMETHING CALLED ROCKABILLY (AKA ROCK) STARTED IN BRITAIN AND AMERICA, AND, VOILA, ANOTHER GLORIOUS WAVE OF FRESH WHITE MUSIC SWEPT THE WORLD.

THE ROOT OF ALL AMERICAN MUSIC IS GAELIC, AND ANGLO SAXON. BLUES, GOSPEL/CHANTICLEER, JAZZ/TAP, SOUL, RAP AND ROCKABILLY (AKA ROCK) ARE JUST A FEW OF THE GENRE ROOTED IN WHITE MUSIC. THE IRISH WERE KNOWN FOR THEIR MASTERY OF RHYMING AND INSTRUMENTATION. THE METER FOR RAP COMES FROM SHAKESPEARIAN BRITAN.

NOT ONLY THAT, WE CREATED THE FIRST INSTRUMENTS AND MOST OF THOSE WHICH FOLLOWED. A CONCISE HISTORY OF MUSIC. MUCH MORE AVAILABLE.

    j.... ....

Agree that Tommy Edwards version was far superior but this was not an example of "white covers of black songs"--although that certainly did occur--ie--Pat Boone, Elvis, ect

  22. D.... D....

Saw him in Vegas about a year before he died.  Great show.  Not a great actor but a great singer and so handsome.

    D.... D....

I liked his acting . . . Rio Bravo. He did great pistol twirling in that movie too

  23. y.... ....

    Where's James Burton?

    y.... ....

Was wondering the same thing myself.

    y.... ....

To the right of Ricky, Rickies left. On the guitar.

    y.... ....

    not James

  24. M.... C....

    He sure was talented.

  31. R.... R....

Rick Nelson sings this extremely well, oddly enough I never heard it when it was released 50 years ago.
Very glad I caught it this time around and was able to order an MP3 copy.

  32. M.... S....

My dad never met Dawes. The day he handed in the lyric, Dawes died, prompting the publisher to wonder whether my dad's lyric killed him!

  33. R.... R....

    Majorsongs,

Your dad has written so many wonderful songs, for "All In The Game" do you know if he actually met and collaborated with Charles Dawes?

Thank you for identifying yourself as being related to Carl Sigman

  34. J.... S....

Not bad at all. The man could sing.

  35. P.... ....

    That's so interesting!
