Rick James - Big Time Lyrics

Wanted to be on a stage
Where bright lights shine
On me at Carnegie
Polished up my act
Knew the crowds would see I had the knack
And that's a fact
Glamour and fame
Wasn't much more than a crazy game
I had to play
Now I got my wish
I don't know if I can handle this
But I think I'm gonna win
I'm in the Big Time, Big Time
And I know success is all mine, all mine
Big Time, Big Time
Gonna have the best of time
So now I'm there and an agent handles my career,
Star of the Year
Following the steps of the best
Of Broadway East and West,
I passed the test
It's all too much
With the interviews, reviews and such
I'm very touched
And it blows my mind
All the autographs I have to sign
And there's so little time
I'm in the Big Time, Big Time
And I know success is all mine, all mine
Big Time, Big Time
Gonna have the best of time
I was born to funk
I was born to funk and roll
In the Big Time

  22. The Master E Brooks

Even strongly beneath the influence of heavy street pharmaceuticals luckily it didn't impair his ability to rock the hell out of this groovey song inconjunction with his drug induced upbeat GROOVY ensemble because it hit the radio waves in heavy rotation and surely made you get up and dance. Years later I can still dance to this song this day....

Man. The album that this is off of (Garden Of Love) was slept on. Because some considered it "soft" because it focused a little more of some ballads. But there was definite FUNK on that album. And the ballads were cold.

Not all my childhood was fucked up!

  69. gregory J

    Rick James was COLD-BLOODED!!!!!

  70. ToonieMama

Part of the reason Rick James' music was so good was that he had "good hooks" in his songs. Same goes for Teena Marie; they were both incredible musicians and producers.

    Adonis Sesson

    I agree beautiful 😍

  71. Kim Whitmore

Heeeeey, never knew whose that tall, sexy, in leather drink of chocolate always next to rick james, is that the banging bass behind all ricks songs and its a long bass, it goes good with his height, what's that 6'5"?

    Beverly Robinson

Kim Whitmore That's Oscar Alston, RJ's bass guitar player 😎

    Kevin Gamble

It is a long bass - it's called an Ovation Magnum, and it is indeed longer than an average bass. I used to play one. The shorter upper horn of its body also makes the neck look longer.

    Kim Whitmore

Beverly Robinson, thanks, I think I brought up rick on soul train and Don introduce them.....I always thought he looked good from way back then, and I'm only 20something, believe me

    Kim Whitmore

Kevin Gamble, it a magnum huh? the dirty harry of bass with little force behind it, it will make my day

    errborn

Kim Whitmore his horn player was the finest the finest oh man

  72. Kim Whitmore

Heeeeey, Leroy, Don"soul train" said Rick James change image(clothes) did you do that for this song? its working, its working man, still in big t "p-funk style and success was all his, and some going to you too, yeeeeaaaaaaa, peace, do this look like the funk sign € ? .....maybe little p funk sign.

  73. Kim Whitmore

Heeeeey, big horn sound with Leroy Jackson all up and through this with his team....can I call it team? .....made it set for ...las(not lost) "souls" V E G A S.

  74. misscritique66

    Club Banger rite here.....GET IT!!

  75. IKE FILLMORE

The world third biggest music artist of all time in the Big Time besides Michael Jackson 1, Whitney Huston 2 and Prince # 4. The World 4 Greatest Artists Of All Time RIP... Hands down!

    LawDude777

i AM VOTING HIM #1 BECAUSE MICHAEL JACKSON AND ESPECIALLY PRINCE RIPPED HIM OFF! Prince and Jackson fooled around with gayism and MTV and the white folk love that crap!

    A Matt

LawDude777 MJ did not mess with gayism ... wtf you talking about?

    cartoonworld1000

@LawDude777 bro Michael hung out with Rick James a lot, and patterned a lot of the base funk of the grooves on Off The Wall from his many funk influences, including Rick James. Mike was never gay as well, neither was Prince

  76. stevie kay

Slick Rick is #1 Funkster! Funk Forever!

  77. Derek Owens

Rick was so much better during this era, BEFORE Super Freak garbage.

    RICK JAMES
Our meeting with Rick started simply enough.. at Blank Tapes Studios, making demos.
1979 was coming to a close, when the guys and I were invited to Bob Blank's to work a few more new tunes. This time, the songs were “Once You Got Me Goin’”, “Thin Ice” and “Big Time”. Just simple, stripped-down versions.. bass, piano and drums, with scratch lead and background vocals. Certainly not very polished.. just ‘bare-bones’ ideas. Still, James, Sonny and I were very pleased with the results.
On our way home from Bob’s 20th street studios, we decided to stop at Kenny Morris’ apartment on 57th street… to let Patrick hear what we were working on. Much to our surprise, Ken was being visited by a long time friend of his, Rick James. I was familiar with some of his work (“You & I” and “Mary Jane” particularly), but not much else. I was aware that he was considered Motown’s new “Wunderkind” and as such, was commanding very sizable production budgets. None of that was on our minds.
The ‘real’ reason we stopped at Kenny’s was to procure some of that special ‘inspiration’ which Kenny was able to procure, every now and again. Essentially, to ‘re’-up, flee uptown, chill and vibe out on the work we’d just completed. None of us were expecting to be invited inside, to share a few glasses of wine with everybody. It made me feel very special actually.
Rick was real cool people, it turns out. Behind the bravado-hype persona was an actual musician, an actual talent.. with considerable actual chops. He talked freely and openly about everything.. his composing, his bass playing, his issues with the label, his plans for the next album. And he wanted to hear what we’d been working on. Insistently so. “Big Time” happened to be the first track on the cassette. He never got to the others, as far as I know.
“ I gotta have it. That track is mine.”, was his mantra for the rest of the evening.
The song itself is all about when one achieves the elusive dream of being successful, particularly in the entertainment industry. Of course it emanates from my own dreams.. as well as those of Sonny, James and no doubt Patrick. It fit Rick’s entire persona like a glove. After the enormous success of his debut album, “Come Get It”, the two subsequent albums, “Fire It Up” and “Bustin’ Out Of L-Seven” were not nearly as well received. But he had very high hopes for the forthcoming “Garden Of Love” album.
I’ve always believed that our composition, “Big Time”, helped Rick turn an important corner, creatively. It’s release turned positive attention to him once again… receiving the heavy rotation nod from radio stations around the world. And the album that immediately followed, “Street Songs”, is considered by most to be his breakthrough album. I’d like to think that our humble composition played some small part.

    Alejandra Iniguez

Wow! Personally I think the GARDEN OF LOVE album is the most special album Rick made in my opinion.. That album is just full of deep flowing emotion and the musical compositions on that album played by the stone city band are materpieces!! I especially have a soft spot for SUMMER LOVE.. when I first heard BIG TIME, I always wondered who penned it because not that Rick couldn't inspire a belief of him dreaming about Carnegie cus I'm sure Rick could sell you anything but,.. lol, I just never pictured it..
