What is the secret formula behind this song?! Is it the rhythm that can do without backing track? Is it the lyrics? How about Keith's Vocals?! God damn if it aint the combination of these tracks I swear just one of these layers could hold off on it's own. What's the pattern of the rhythm? Just by ear, there seems to be one. Well multiple that sound like one. Guitar arrangements that is. More than one guitar arrangement. A lead guitar clean tone slowly and periodically licking notes. Keith seems very sad in this song, or is it just me? Almost as if realizing wasted potential. A sort of mourning of missing what could be. But at the same time, there's a freedom in recognition of this. Almost as if classical music has been channeled in this recording session. The spirit of that unique ability to tune into. A spell, even. Getting back to that guitar pattern. The rhythm guitar is not always there. Instead it chooses to "highlight" certain sections with a bright yellow marker. "Cheer up!" It says. "Afterall, YOU ARE THE ONE LOOPING THIS SONG". Well it seems I still have yet much to learn when it comes to song writing. I mean, with this current song I am writing, I wrote a similar riff to Keith's rhythm. 120bpm with lots of half notes spaced with rests and quarter note pattern changes. There's something about the sustains Keith wrote in "Gimme Shelter" that allowed me to listen to the silence within the music. So I was inspired by this for the rhythm section 7th fret B & G string. (Close to a D chord in the key of B). Or that other finger formation might be a better accurate description but frankly it's so weird translating this in a way someone besides me can understand. To anyone reading... note this is where I click "post" -.-.

And this is why Keith has written so many catchy tunes that have spun gold for them and entertained us for so long. He has spoken in interviews about having to know where to use less at just the right moments and he is the master of that for sure. Much of his Xpensive Wino music holds up very well. The deal with the Stones having such a superb rhythm section is has been the royal trinity of Bill, Keith, and Charlie. I heard Bill Wyman explaining it one time that he would be just a moment behind Charlie on timing, and that Keith had to focus on Charlie who was prompting Keith, and that it was always just a wobble moment of falling apart. Coolest explanation ever.

this song is an introspective masterpiece, i'm absolutely sure of that, because as rare as Keith's song's make me want to cry, this tune does just it. the refrain where he sings yap yap you talk too much to his partner , is just plain beautiful.Which makes me wonder, why the hell did keith so rarely want to put his ballads into a more concise,rythmic form,so that they wouldn't just be perceived as unstructured,disjointed,melodyless rants?
