Richard Thompson - Time To Ring Some Changes Lyrics

This old house is a-tumbling down
The walls are gone but the roof is sound
The landlord's deaf, he can never be found
It's time to ring some changes

They'll arrest you son if you just stand still
They'll ask you to pose with your hand in the till
They'll ask you to die when you've written your will
It's time to ring some changes

It's time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes

O the politicians they look so smug
You say tell the truth and they give you a shrug
You might find the truth swept under the rug
It's time to ring some changes

You pay for your money for your daily bread
But the bread's gone up so you need more money
The money's gone down, better borrow instead
It's time to ring some changes

Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes
Time to ring some changes

O you fall in love with the girl you've seen
Diamond studded on a TV screen
But the change in your pocket won't buy you a dream
It's time to ring some changes

So you steal a car and you go for a ride
You end up sleeping with some girl guide
And everything you do leaves you empty inside
It's time to ring some change

Time to ring some changes...

Love this song! great performance !

I dare anyone from Keith Richard to Dave Gilmour to Jimmy Page to play guitar with this level of skill.

    Fully agree!

Dave V I agree that mr Thompson is very special but daring an apple to be an orange just won't work. The beautiful thing about music is the wonderful amount of space there is for so many forms of expression. I don't want to sound like a 'man-splainer' but it's too easy for us to compare rather than to simply enjoy. Enjoy! Nice taste by the way!

You are right, of course, I tend to compare musicians as if it is some kind of competition and I really shouldn't. I think it goes back to my teenage years, when all of my friends used to do this. I guess what bothers me is that a musician's musician like Thompson gets relatively little attention when in fact he is every bit as good in his own way as some of the so-called heavyweights that I referenced. And, if only people would broaden the scope of their listening to include the kind of music he creates! Cheers.

Dave V, I try to keep in mind what Muddy Waters said about competition among musicians, or music fans who put down other people's favorite music and musicians: "you can't be the best, you can only be a good 'un"

They're all different players. I enjoy each of them for the unique things they bring to their music. Thompson is awesome, no doubt!

I have heard various different versions of this great song, both musically and especially lyrically. Check out the online lyrics and compare them with this YouTube version and you'll see what I mean! I busk a slightly different version anyway...

That's just too amazing, plus RT with a (almost) full head of hair. He looks much different today. I wish that he would lose the lid already, he and Roger McGuinn. Come on, guys, let it shine! Ain't no shame in a chrome dome.

  8. f.... ....

It amazes me how He can flat pick and fingerpick at the same time so perfectly.
