Richard Thompson - Keep Your Distance Lyrics
If I cross your path again
Who knows where, who knows when
On some morning without number, on some highway without end
Don't grasp my hand and say
"Fate has brought you here today"
Keep your distance, oh, keep your distance
When I feel you close to me, what can I do but fall
Keep your distance, keep your distance
Ah with us it must be all or none at all
It's a desperate game we play
Throw our souls, our lives, away
Wounds that can't be mended and debts that can't be paid
Oh, I played and I got stung
I'm sweeping out the footprints where I strayed
Keep your distance, keep your distance
When I feel you close to me what can I do but fall
Keep your distance, oh, keep your distance
With us it must be all or none at all
Keep your distance, oh keep your distance
When I feel you close to me what can I do but fall
Keep your distance, oh, keep your distance
With us it must be all or none at all
With us it must be all or none at all
With us it must be all or none at all

awesome song such poetry
incredible song, so well done and amazing lyrics
I heard this song for the first time about a dozen years after I had had a similar experience. It is a test of your character and how you relate to the rest of humanity. There is pain, angst, heartbreak, and the forgiveness and wisdom of time in this song, especially for any of us who have been through this.
It does not mean I am not Christain if I find this singer very boring.now remember I belivie in telling you my truth about this singer,And I could not read anything tioll a tutor worked with me as I tryed to rtead'' Winnie the Pooh'' get me a break for once.
Huh? Anyone got a babel fish?
If I cross your path again,
Who knows where,
Who knows when
On some morning without number,
On some highway without end
Don't grasp my hand and say
"Fate has brought you here today"
Oh fate is only fooling with us, friend
Keep your distance, oh keep your distance
When I feel you close to me what can I do but fall
Keep your distance, keep your distance
Ah with us it must be all or none at all
It's a desperate game we play,
Throw our souls, our lives, away
Wounds that can't be mended
And debts that can't be paid
Oh I played and I got stung
Now I'm biting back my tongue
I'm sweeping out
The footprints where I strayed
Keep your distance, keep your distance
When I feel you close to me what can I do but fall
Keep your distance, oh keep your distance
With us it must be all or none at all
Keep your distance, oh keep your distance
When I feel you close to me what can I do but fall
Keep your distance, oh keep your distance
With us it must be all or none at all
With us it must be all or none at all
With us it must be all or none at all
Songwriters: Richard John Thompson
Thank you for typing out the lyrics! Love Richard Thompson
great song--love it
This is that type of song that can be liked by anyone, no matter they are from. :)
"I'm sweepin' out the footprints where I've strayed..." That's real songwriting.
Marvelous! Richard is a musical guru. :)
Buddy and Julie Miller do a great version of this song.
Yes, that's how I know the song. Credit Thompson for a good job songwriting, but the arrangement, vocals, and overall sound of the Millers' version is much better.
@Alan Thomas It's a matter of taste. I find the country treatment and poor harmonies of the Millers version grates.
A familiar scenario that many of us will relate to, with words and music that sum up the emotion perfectly.
He really is the bizboz. Song writing has never sounded so eazy.
New England, U.S. appreciates Richard.
My all-time favorite song from an amazing album. I will. Don't take it for the title just the meaning Girly X
aye but listen to the celtic connections pal
Don’t be absurd. You’d be lucky if you got half a verse from the Beagles that equalled Thompson’s writing.
Seriously? Did you really read what you wrote before hitting reply? Talk about absurd.
Richard now makes California his home.
Whoops, another relationship later, it is New Jersey!
Long may he remain a secret. I want to go to the Barbican - The Royal Festival Hall - for instance and get a ticket! The Man is worth his OBE, Perhaps it will be Sir very soon.
I Love this song ! and this great songwriter ! Simple heartfelt lyrics, doesn't it just make you want to dance ?
That may be the most stupid posting I've ever seen anywhere. First of all, Richard started long before the Eagles. And second, the Eagles would be lucky if Sir Richard let them carry his guitar strings.
Richard Thompson sounding frighteningly like The Eagles.
One of the most obvious songs on Rumor and Sigh (1991).
Ditto Porchdog's comment
Richard John Thompson was born in Ladbroke Crescent, Notting Hill, West London in 1949. His father, a Scot, and was by profession a policeman, and an amateur guitar player
One of the greatest songs ever!
One of my favorite Richard Thompson songs. Thanks so much for posting this.
He's a londoner mate!
I don't know what the fuck they were putting in the water in Scotland in the '50's, but we need some more of it.
