Richard Thompson - I Misunderstood Lyrics

She said "Darling I'm in love with your mind
The way you care for me, it's so kind
Love to see you again, I wish I had more time"

She was laughing as she brushed my cheek
"Why don't you call me, angel, maybe next week
Promise now, cross your heart and hope to die"

But I misunderstood, but I misunderstood, but I misunderstood
I thought she was saying good luck, she was saying good bye
But I misunderstood, but I misunderstood, but I misunderstood
I thought she was saying good luck, she was saying good bye

Things I tried to put shine in her eyes
Wire wheels and shimmering things
Wild nights when the whole world seemed to fly

She said "The thing that's so unique
When we're together we don't have to speak
We'll always be such good friends, you and I"

Oh but I misunderstood, but I misunderstood, but I misunderstood
I thought she was saying good luck, she was saying good bye
But I misunderstood, but I misunderstood, but I misunderstood
I thought she was saying good luck, she was saying good
I thought she was saying good luck, she was saying good
I thought she was saying good luck, she was saying goodbye

Oh, she was saying goodbye, oh, she was saying goodbye
Oh, she was saying, saying, saying, saying

How do you do that? The soul?

I saw him perform this song live in concert. The whole show was phenomenal. It was just Richard with his guitar. A concert I'll remember for the rest of my life. If your able to see him you should. You won't be disappointed.

What a beautiful song that cuts deep into the ear bank, and massages the soul!

  4. W.... G....

... one of his best. Feel the power of a really good song - not much more to be said.

  5. D.... H....

    Saddest lyrics ever.

  6. B.... W....

The fact that Rolling Stone had John Frusciante ahead of Thompson in that list has to be one of the funniest jokes of all time...

Beggar Wall I agree with you; however, one has to recognize that there’s an inherent silliness in these “Best Guitarist” rankings. After all, what are the criteria and who makes the determination? I really don’t care who is better than whom. I am going to listen to what I like.

what would be funny is what would happen if you put an acoustic guitar in his hands. a run of the mill jam-band player vs a musician's musician. does he have a signature sound or thing that makes him unique? no Richard Thompson does. does RT fill stadiums? no. does popularity equal talent? no. go see RT with his band, or even a solo show and get back to me. you hear him and there's no doubt who it is. and the qualit8y of his songwriting craftsmanship matters. find me another play that can use a straight pick and play fingerstyle. It opens up possibilities on the guitar that what's his name never dreams of.

    Incredible ;)

Slays me. In a good good way.

47 years since Fairport Convention, and still one of the most articulate guitarists in the world. Keep on playing, don't ever stop, you make this world a better place.

What a glorious tune lyrics and music score.....one of my fave's of this I am sure. Thanks Angel Warrior.  ;-)

Sinatra could not do that song, but that is stating the obvious and that means I'm nervous. I think RT sang that song for Me.

    M.... S....

I think Sinatra's arrangers would have enjoyed "swinging".this and it would have fitted well on one of his early 60s albums.

There's a reason Dylan asks him to play along when he performs... I was lucky enough to be at "Las Leyendas De La Gitarra" in Seville in 1992 when Dylan, Thompson, Les Paul, and that bloke from Pink Floyd (Roger Waters) all performed. Sadly I only had enough money for one night and I missed the Dylan night when Thompson played on All Along The Watchtower. I saw him the next night and he was brilliant as usual. He's worth every word of praise he's received over the years and every mile to see him

    So very, very nice.

you could be right better than dylan he is so good

I always find it amazing people can play guitar (or in the south: That thar GEE TAR)
The ability to move your fingers from one position so effortlessly to another.
*I usually trip when I walk and chew gum. And don't get me started on the tummy rub/head tap thing...I'll only wind up in hospital.

But the ability to play guitar and sing (remembering all the words etc...) that is what astonishes me most about musicians.
Okay, that and female singers who wear spandex one size too small.

    Pre-Internets, yo!

    KnoWUMseyin?

  17. I.... ....

Let's face it. There will only be one RT ... EVER. He makes it look so easy.

  18. G.... V....

    World slack now; sub-geniuses unite!

  20. J.... J....

    Incredible. Amazing art.

  21. M.... T....

    You are so right.

This song. This song played on our local independent radio station just as my alarm went off about twice a week for a month until I became obsessed with finding out just what obscure artist was responsible (pre-internets yo)...only to find the greatest songwriter ever (and a damn fine guitar player to boot!). I say "greatest songwriter" and could argue the point, but it's not a thing to argue about. You can have your opinion if you disagree.

    But you'll be wrong.

  23. P.... D....

Thanks for posting this. I am a new RT fan.

  24. T.... ....

brain to fingers, do you read me?

  25. m.... ....

Best version of this song ever, perfect bare accoustic version!

  26. L.... S....

No guitar pyrotechnics this time around, although Richard is perfectly capable. Instead, simple, perfect, beautiful accompaniment to a lovely song.
