Richard Marx - Hazard Lyrics

My mother came to Hazard when I was just seven
Even then the folks in town said with predjudiced eyes
That boy's not right
Three years ago when I came to know Mary
First time that someone looked beyond the rumors and the lies
And saw the man inside

We used to walk down by the river
She loved to watch the sun go down
We used to walk along the river
And dream our way out of this town

No one understood what I felt for Mary
No one cared until the night she went out walking alone
And never came home
Man with a badge came knocking next morning
Here was I surrounded by a thousand fingers suddenly
Pointed right at me

I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town

I think about my life gone by
And how it's done me wrong
There's no escape for me this time
All of my rescues are gone, long gone

I swear I left her by the river
I swear I left her safe and sound
I need to make it to the river
And leave this old Nebraska town

Yes the mother was an adulterer but the father is just as bad for abandoning that little boy and leaving.

great song,so emotional.I miss old days.

I’ve always loved this song but have never understood the video and story

    b.... ....

The song is a ballad (a song or poem which tells a story). In this case, it talks about a narrator (portrayed by Marx) and a young woman named Mary. Basically, Marx as a child moved to a new town with his mother as a child. His dad was a military man, and so was infrequently present as a result, which left Marx in a vulnerable position. Most of the other townsfolk were prejudiced against him right from when he was a child, hence the lyrics, 'the townsfolk said with prejudiced eyes, that boy's not right'. It could indicate slight mental illness, or someone purely being eccentric.

Mary was the one person in the whole of the town who looked beyond the rumors and lies, and saw who he really was. He befriended her, and they would then spend time together as friends.

One night however, Mary went out walking all by herself and never returned. The next day, she was found dead, lying at the bottom of the river. Since he had a bad reputation at the time, pretty much everyone in the town accused Marx of murdering her.

It's not known for certain who is responsible for Mary's death. The puzzle has deliberately been left unsolved, so that we as the audience have to decide for ourselves who the guilty party is.

Marx himself is one suspect, because he's pleading that he's innocent, and it's possible people could argue that since she's the only person in the whole town who was nice to him, he wouldn't have done it. However, despite that, his lyrics are contradictory, which can possibly indicate that he's lying i.e. he said she went out alone, then said, 'I left her by the river'. How could he have 'left her by the river' if she was alone? However, that could also be taken simply to mean that he was by the side of the river the last time that he saw her before she died.

Another theory is that Mary's lover is responsible. It's possible that he may have been jealous of Mary's friendship with Marx, flown into a rage and killed her. That way, although he would be losing her, at least he wouldn't have been losing her to Marx.

The Sheriff is another suspect because of the way he's seen smirking when the other townsfolk accuse Marx of being the killer, and due to the way Mary is seen running from the police car. (This is the theory that I believe).

Another theory is that Mary committed suicide, although since it's shown that she was lying at the bottom of the river having been strangled with the scarf, this is unlikely to be the case.

Some people may say that it's not possible to tell who is responsible for Mary's death due to a lack of evidence.

There's another version of the video with a few different scenes in it, which you may find useful too.
