Rich Mullins - Screen Door Lyrics

It's about as useless as a screen door on a submarine
Faith without works baby
It just ain't happenin'
One is your left hand one is your right
It'll take two strong arms to hold on tight
Some folks cut off their nose just to spite their face
I think you need some works to show for your alleged faith

Well there's a difference you know
'Tween having faith and playing make believe
One will make you grow the other one just make you sleep
Talk about it
But I really think you oughtta take a leap off of the ship
Before you claim to walk on water
Faith without works is like a song you can't sing
It's about as useless as a screen door on a submarine

Faith comes from God and every word that He breathes
He lets you take it to your heart so you can give it hands and feet
It's gotta be active if it's gonna be alive
You gotta put it into practice
Otherwise

It's about as useless as a screen door on a submarine
Faith without works baby it just ain't happenin'
One is your right hand one is your left
It's your light your guide your life and your breath
Faith without works is like a song you can't sing
It's about as useless as a screen door on a submarine

In the early 1960’s there was a competition for comebacks that started “You’re about as funny as…” They would end with something like “a fire in a match factory” or “a flood in a Fizzies factory”. I had just read a story about submarines in the book "They met Danger" about Medal of Honor recipients. When I pictured a submarine, and looked at the screen door in my house, I thought how useless a screen door would be as the main hatch of a submarine. So, originally the saying was "about as funny as a screen door on a submarine". The comeback also became "USELESS as a screen door on a submarine". Every joke or expression was first told by SOMEONE. That one bubbled up from my brain. Thanks for making a song out of it.

Abby Davala you always have that one person that goes on the comments just to troll. They have nothing else better to do and probably pull up Christian songs just to post nonsense.

For those still curious, the man singing lead is Mullins, yes. The people singing the background harmonies are his band (and possibly some relatives/friends). Not really in the style of Take 6 necessarily, as the latter was a jazz group, but similar in the sense that it's an a capella track (and a very well arranged one at that).

No, it's probably just him on a backing track and/or backing singers, but it's definitely Take-6-style acapella. :)
