Replacements, The - Don't Get Married Lyrics

You're like a guitar in the hands
Of a man that just can't play
You're like an inmate countin' off the days
You're like a student on vacation
That's waitin' for school to resume
Like a flower in the dark
Never gonna bloom

You're getting married
You're getting married
You're getting married - oh no...

Well, you say that you'll both be real happy
You forgot to tell your eyes
You're like a bird in a cage
Watchin' the flock fly on by
You're like a student who's on vacation
Just waitin' for school to start
I don't know what's in it for you,
But it ain't in your heart...

You're getting married
You're getting married
You're getting married - oh no...oh no...

You're like a guitar in the hands
Of some fool that just can't play
You're like an inmate countin' off the days
Well, you say that you'll both be happy
Hey, you forgot to tell your eyes
You're like a bird in a cage
Watchin' the flock fly on by

You're like a student on vacation
Just waitin' for school to resume
You're like a flower in the dark
You ain't never gonna bloom
If you get married
If you get married
Don't you get married
No, no, no no...

Replacements, The Don't Get Married Comments
  1. E.... M....

I've always wondered if the woman on the screen was Paul's first wife?

    E.... M....

Nope, she's what I found when I searched for "melancholy bride" images. But yours would be a better story.

    E.... M....

    @ih8music Ok, thanks.

A love cut short by one person's perspective. Another's perspective is love- seeking. Then at 3:13 the past is no longer the present. Hang in there, brother.

  3. B.... W....

Moment at 3:13 is for my brother, realizing life has continued even if it went the wrong way.

ayedavanita7 i thought the same thing about bob. his guitar work on this cut is so awesome. the harmonics at the beginning in particular. its such a powerful piece to be left untouched and left to bootlegging.  maybe bob liked it, maybe he didnt. he has the reputation for the whole 'wild man' guitar work, but i always thought  he musta enjoyed sixteen blue given his guitar solo at the end. christ all mighty i can still listen to that dudes guitar work all day long

+Ryan Mclovin I agree with you on Bob's guitar. Strange, that literally from their first rehearsal, Westerberg didn't care for Bob's style/sound and wanted him gone. Chris Mars said that can't happen. There is no
Replacements without Bob's early work. And after he was sacked,
well...it just didn't feel the same. And don't get me wrong, Slim did
his own thing too- just in a different, more subtle way.

Yet they made Tim basically without Bob and PTMM as a 3 piece. The early stuff is fine and I love it, but let's not go overboard.

    R.... M....

No Bob = Not the Mats.

  5. R.... ....

I believe this is from a 1983 radio session they played at KFAI

  6. C.... H....

this is on a bootleg i have called "the early mats" originally printed in italy i believe

  7. M.... ....

    fucking fuck.

  8. a.... ....

    always one of my favorites

After hearing the acoustic demo so many times it's great to hear this. Makes perfect sense in this form. I really wish this had made it onto Hootenanny. Quite surprising they never recorded this for an album. I guess Bob hated it... but then they put Within Your Reach on the album anyway. Oh well. Great stuff anyway.

  10. w.... ....

    thank you

  11. Q.... M....

I actually just got it from the expansive bootleg 'paid in beer' that's been floating around. you have it? is it similar to 'flowers'?

  12. a.... ....

It's on the bootleg "Flowers in the Dark"

  13. K.... ....

    Beautiful.

  14. i.... ....

@digestedlunch honestly, I have no clue. downloaded it off some site ages ago. Happy to put it back up.

  15. Q.... M....

many thanks or putting this back up, my fave version of this track. so raw, and captures Westerburg's emotional voice perfectly. Where did you get it?
