REO Speedwagon - Dead At Last Lyrics
Alas, stars are falling
While they're drawing a card of death
Torn velvet curtains
Of our living shows no less... ahhhh!
Something has brought me here
Silent eyes are staring
Voices calling me to be free... ahhhh!
Freedom! [x35]

REO Speedwagon Dead At Last Comments
Just think, if Gary hadn't chased Terry out into a field naked one drunken and stoned night, we might all have been spared a 70-year-old lead singer in spandex and scarfs prancing around today like some kind of mutant goofy wrinkled old teenager.

Best song they ever did. They could have entered the pantheon of the great Prog Rock bands had they kept this up. Golden Country was another outstanding work.
Richrath and Luttrell <3
Fuckin great drum solo too btw.
All of you gays and lesbians read the KJV book of JUDE! This is your final judgement if you do not repent this day and except what Jesus Christ laid down for you which is His life!!! Can't you be a true friend to OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST!!! Why can't we all be his friends he was tortured to hell and back for all of you!!! God damn it!!!
Proselytize somewhere else. You have your forums. And it's His friends, not his friends. Jesus forgives "gays and lesbians". You should follow in His stead and act like Jesus would. Not condemn. Jesus said it is not your or my place to judge. Follow The Word and quit cherry-picking His words to spread your hate.
Saw them play a high school gym back in the day. In Belleville, Illinois no less. Where one band member had relatives living there. A girl who went to Belleville West High School had her dad hire them for a gig there. Around the time just after this first album. We had no idea as high schoolers that someone could just plop down a couple of grand and have a great band like REO Speedwagon, one of our favorite bands back then, play some girls birthday bash at the local high school. Probably saw them play a dozen times back then and each time was better than the last. Tune a Piano was probably their best of the last of that type of sound. They then went the Journey/Steve Perry route and ditched the harder sound for poppier bubblegum sounding yuk. The first couple of albums were more political and radical.
RIP Gary.
R O C K ON ! ! Sounds as good as it did back when I first heard it in '75. This song totally ROCKS, especially the first four minutes. REO did nothing like this ever since. (This song must have inspired Tom Sholz of Boston.) REO, thank you guys so much for this memory. I still have my 69 GTO that me and the guys cruised around listening to this song CRANKED!!!
Not quite dead, yet.
The first three albums were like this. But then came Kevin and his glammed up pop style. I like Kevin's voice. Couldn't have had a Golden Country without him. But yeah, most bands are young and they do their best work before they sellout for the big cash.
R E O before they sucked. Their first 2 albums were great.
Heck all their 70's albums were great, it was in the 80's that they started to take a turn for the worst.
Cronin is annoying and his voice sucks. Kinda like Geddy Lee.
A song for my funeral maybe? ;-) Considering the title..
Definitely. Metal as all hell.
saw them in a bar Roch, NY
was a virgin to everything... but for $5, I guess it was really worth it
New REO is not my bag
Don't know great music. A lib supporter I am guessing.

F off with your political division bullcrap already.
Sheer passion without the Fucking commercialism.
RIP Keith Emerson.
I used to own this on lp..exellent recordings on this ..I listened to this for hours upon hours.
great song
it's rock
아름다운 시절들이 간다. 음악을 들으며 긴시간 잊혀진 얼굴들이 생각난다.
I can't believe that this is REO Speedwagon. It's funny how certain bands were better before "selling out". Peter Green and Danny Kirwan era Fleetwood Mac comes to mind, as does the previously mentioned Journey lineup without Steve Perry. Also, the old Scorpions with Ulrich Roth were amazing.
@thomasjarvis
I got the vinyl when they released it in the 70's
yeppers
I was referring back to Benjamin's Wright's above statement "It has long since been unavailable on LP", as it was re-released by Yellow Label on vinyl in 2013, and I figured that him and many others may not be aware of this fact and would appreciate knowing it. It's never a bad idea to purchase mint and sealed back-up copy especially when I've seen new pressings go for as low as $16.00!! It's awesome that you got your copy back in the 70's and have managed to keep it in good condition all this time. Unfortunately I was unable to acquire my own copy in the 70's as wasn't born until 1976. But I've adored REO since I was a child and just recently I've been getting back into them and enjoying getting acquainted with the Terry Luttrelland and Mike Murphy albums which are fantastic as I'm sure you know...
Benjamin Wright I Agee with you 100%
@Benjamin Wright
I miss Thin Lizzy..RIP P.L. I have that REO Speedwagon Record. I have a Techniques SL 1300 direct drive turn table that still works.
luttrels voice is much better than Cronins. in factvthe best REO vocalist was Michael Murphy.
Gary chased Terry out into that cornfield, half mad. The rest is history. lol RIP Gary.
rip gary
wierd song from REO SPEEDWAGON but i like it
I remember when this came out. I was at my friends house and she gave me a joint then put some headphones on me , wow. Never found it again til now . Thanks
+renelle evans Their best recording..
This is "The Best REO album ever....you are right kathy....Lutrell.....ROCKS....
This song has a Jethro Tull kinda to it - awesome song
Lutrell Rocks!
No shit you've got the first Doors album, Chicago Transit Authority,Allman Brothers,Journey,Reo Speedwagon,ZZ Top,Black Sabbath and more.
I agree about the debut albums, but I think the reasons are that they've had longer to write it, they haven't made it yet, and still have passion. A bit cynical perhaps, but let's face it - how do you write about angst when you're a millionaire?
When you're hungry, you're sharper in whatever you do.
thealbumcollector I don't think they wrote over along period of time Richrath joined the band in 1970 and it was recorded in 70 and released in 71
This was a regional release mostly, this first album. Hard to find outside of the Midwest at the time of it's initial release.
Yes if forced i would take Perry over Cronin, you sound a lot like me my friend at the risk of sounding arrogant you have great taste in music. Im 32 myself but realized about seven years ago what the best kind of music is and when it came from. 1967-1979. The music of today is shit that is painfully obvious. Whenever im unsure of a band i always listen to their debut album. Chances are it has better songwriting the players have attitude and the music is less commercial.
I liked Rollie, too; but, I didn't mind Perry as much as I do Cronin. I shared this song on Facebook, and one of my friends told me that he liked Luttrell's voice. I have no idea why others don't. I'm not that old, but musically I am stuck in the past. I absolutely detest Rap, Hip Hop, Techo, House and even what passes for metal these days. The last time I turned on the radio and heard a new song that I liked for the first time was at least 25 years ago.
I imagine it was sort of like being a tenured professor for Rollie. After years of trying to front it for the band, he stepped back from the limelight and just started raking in those fat paychecks.
Are you serious for god sake as a music fan and as a bit of a critic Terry Lutrell's voice was better than Cronin (Not An Opinion) he had a more pleasant tone to his voice. Cronin's pitch gets on my nerves quick i cant stand him. Am i also the only person you know who thinks Gregg Rollie fronting Journey was better than the Steve Perry era. Im not your typical mindless music fan the RADIO sucks and ruins bands.
While I agree that early REO is far better than the "sellout' era (Hi Infidelity and later), you are the only person I've ever heard of that preferred Luttrell's (two 't's) voice over Cronin's. In fact, other than myself, you're the only person that didn't outright say that he sucked. But, he had to be replaced because he refused to tour. If Gary had been allowed to retain creative ownership, their music would have been better, but their pockets emptier. More's the pity.
Id like you to name a Kevin Cronin sung song that kicks as much ass as this does. Terry Lutrell is the vocalist here and has a nicer voice than Cronin. Kevin Cronin has that whole high pitched nails on the chalkboard voice that you can only stand for a song or two. Steve Perry of later Journey was the same!!!!! this song rocks hard
Lightning, Son Of A Poor Man(Cronin Version of course), Being Kind Can Hurt Someone Sometimes, Heavy On Your Love, Lucky For You, Easy Money.....all of those songs rock as hard as this one, and Kevin sings them all! Kevin's voice is definitely more nasally, but it fits REO better. This guy sounds just like every 70's singer, Doobie Brothers, Joe Walsh, Foghat...etc, they all have this sound, it's not terrible, but it's plain.
Infernus Rex Funny that the next band Terry Luttrell would join, Starcastle, he would change his voice to sound exactly like Jon Anderson as that band sounds a lot like Yes. You really can't tell this is the same vocalist as in Starcastle.
Reo 2nd album w Cronin on it is really good. That is just as hard as this album
Terry went on to be in Starcastle, for those of you "REO" fans who weren't along for the ride from the groups beginnings, which were much more radical, lyric and music wise:

decent, rawer, but kevin cronin is reo
utahan15. Richrath was REO
uuu, like it, so strange and deep minded of the band...Good music, as all R.E.Os.
