Nice spotting- I honestly never noticed that in this particular song. Pop Song 89 was, at least partly, R.E.M. deliberately doing an equivalent Hello I Love You though. I say 'at leats partly' because it's always unfair to pigeonhole R.E.M.- they have double and treble meanings in their songs / albums. I once got a question to Michael Stipe published in British music magazine Q 'Out of Time was about love, Automatic was about death, New Adventures was about rock and roll. What 's Up about?' It was deliberately reductive- I didn't honestly think that there was a single meaning to the albums - there are loads of overlapping meanings within the albums and between the albums - but Michael Stipe got quite annoyed! Probably not the best time to be simplistic with a rock star genius, after their drummer, source of some of their best known hits Everybody Hurts and Man on the Moon, had left.

Not my favorite band but this song is on my top 10 favorite songs of all time. Thanks for the upload!
