R.E.M. - Oh My Heart Lyrics

The kids have a new take
A new take on faith
Pick up the pieces
Get carried away
I came home to city half erased
I came home to face what we faced

This place needs me here to start
This place is the beat of my heart

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(oh my heart)
Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(oh my heart)

Storm didn't kill me
The government changed
Hear the answer call
Hear the song rearranged
Hear the tress, the ghosts and the buildings sing
With the wisdom to reconcile this thing

It's sweet and it's sad and it's true
How it doesn't look bitter on you

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(oh my heart)
Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(oh my heart)

Mother and father
I stand beside you
The good of this world
Might help see me through

This place needs me here to start
This place is the beat of my heart

Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(oh my heart)
Oh my heart
Oh my heart
(oh my heart)

  10. b.... ....

Strange. I know the words but have no idea what is it about. English language is really hard.

    b.... ....

It is about New Orleans after it got struck by the Hurricane Katrina.

  11. M.... C....

Lovely song from their last album, quintessential REM, unfortunately they couldn't sustain one last great album, and what is the point of REM of they can't make great albums?

  12. V.... ....

I know what this song is actually about. But for me it’s a song about how vulnerable we really are. It’s something I always wanted to cry out… Oh my heart… it's so special, it's so true.

  13. G.... ....

This has a strange Bob Dylan/Johnny Cash vibe to it... dunno if I like it or not.

  22. T.... ....

Heard this song in a commercial for the University of Georgia, was very nice.

The most amazing thing about this tune..
Its written for New Orleans with katrina etc... Hell of a way to retire R.E.M. We the fans will love your music for the REST of our lives!

  27. M.... ....

great song... fits the strange times we are in. All my friends want to leave seaking of a better future. I wish them the best, with this song. It's bitter, it's sad, but is true~

  28. L.... H....

Those 16 dislikers were crying too much about them having split that they accidently clicked thumbs down...

  29. S.... ....

I change my mind, its a very good song.
I think i was kind of unfair before.

  30. A.... ....

R.E.M, this music world still needs you here!

  31. A.... ....

@John1MN But this is also sad, because you want more of it :)

  32. t.... ....

this place needs me here to start
this place is the beat of my heart
this is how i see this song :)

  33. c.... ....

Been together since they were kids, they must have had there up and downs like most folks growing up,and yes all good things come to an end one way or another, they were unique and were very good,my bro was into them in the early 80s,me the last 10 years,i thought they got better with age, them and their music.thanks for the music and the memories,REM.great last album by the way.

  34. J.... ....

It's nice that R.E.M. ended with a really solid album.

  35. f.... ....

@doped1 Some of them are lyrical, means exact translation would not make a sense, like all poetry one have to feel thru it.

  36. n.... ....

Thank you R.E.M. I will never foget you!!! What wonderfull 31 years!
'the skill in attending a party is knowing when it's time to leave.'
    Leaving R.E.M never easy,
I saw the light fading out.
Find it in your heart, it's pulling me apart,
Find it in your heart, it's pulling me apart.
I told you, forever, I love you, forever, forever, forever...

  37. V.... ....

WOW.... it´s a great great song! I hear it AND I feel it! Awesome.

  38. F.... H....

...I randomly typed "oh" in google search to check if i had internet connection. This was one of the suggestions. This is awesome. :D Google ftw~.

  39. C.... C....

@doped1 early rem albums are notorious for inaudable and cryptic lryics but they are (coindidentally or not) the best, the aptly titled murmur to document. modern rem sounds much more obviously politically motivated to me but for this song you have to have heard accalerate's houston where that song referanced katriona this is a followup and a return to the city. you can hear the similaraties

  40. K.... ....

out of curiosity, i'm not a native english speaker, was REM's songs ever supposed to make sense, or is it mostly gibberish word mish mash. I never though they'd made much sense, but that's not to say it doesn't..

  41. d.... n....

    Lubię, lubię, lubię ;D

  42. 1.... ....

    The best.....

  43. s.... ....

Okay I will not be bitter, but it is a close call. If Michael can keep bitterness away, I will try. I need this community too.

Love R.E.M and you all as well. Or maybe it is just the Oxy today.

  44. s.... ....

The song doesn't mean a damn thing, so why do I cry each time?

  45. E.... V....

Top ten bands of all time! Where are u Bill Berry?

  46. M.... ....

This is a very good song, reminds me of old R.E.M when they were at their peak.

  47. s.... ....

    @top20modernrock
You are absolutely correct. I think the Prince show was probably the best halftime show ever. I was a big Prince fan back in the day and I was hoping his show at the bowl would show everyone what a great performer he is and he did exactly that. Other bands I think deserve a shot at playing the bowl are COLDPLAY and MUSE. Also, LIVE if they ever decide to get back together again. I saw them about 10 times over the years and their shows always are great crowd pleasers.

  48. s.... ....

    @top20modernrock

I agree. It's funny because I was just thinking the same thought this morning and then I saw this post. It is only right that REM gets a chance to do this. I have followed them since the beginning and they will always be on my favorite bands list.

  49. B.... C....

    Great video! Keep 'em coming...

  50. B.... H....

    loves R.E.M <3 <3 <3

  51. B.... ....

    @top20modernrock

don't get me wrong but u just got what i hate bout your country. superbowl? how could you ever think of such a shit while listening to this bad ass tune? nothing in common...is this all bout football and burgers?

  52. d.... ....

    @alidadban

I agree it's an ace song i cant believe they haven't released them as cd singles they'd have sold more.

  53. A.... D....

    Great lyrics and great music

  54. s.... ....

"storm didn't kill me, the government changed"

  55. a.... ....

@katjagorius , has he seen the message ?

  56. D.... M....

I like this song, however, you can't deny that it's "Sing for the Submarine" (from Accelerate) twin sibling. Even some of the words are similar at one part. Great CD though.

  57. T.... ....

Oh my heart... This song is in my heart...

  58. s.... ....

    rem class

  59. L.... C....

channeling late johnny cash, i love this.

  60. M.... ....

This is on par with Automatic for the people, wich i found to be the first album of any kind of music with a whole cd with not a single average or bad song.

  64. t.... ....

@top20modernrock who gives a SHIT about the super bowl

  65. A.... L....

This makes me think of the situation in Japan, somehow.

Also, it just wouldn't be an REM ballad without that "tierce de picardie" at the very end.

the storm didnt kill me and the government changed

from that other song where he says if the storm doesnt kill me, the government will :)
i love it when they do that in songs :D

  73. p.... ....

    @cooldude10200 hey totally

  74. H.... ....

Thank you Scott McCaughey for adding the accordion part to this beautiful song!

  75. B.... S....

Ohhh, I LOVE them and you!

  76. R.... G....

Awesome... very reminiscent to Antony and the Johnsons style.

  77. P.... ....

Sounds a lot like "Disappear" (2001 - Reveal), but sounds fine!

  78. M.... M....

The more I listen to this song the more I feel touched with a knot in my throat. Mike Stipe is a great poet besides a powerful rocker...his voice is dark and warm so that every concept and word is underlined with strenght. The most genial phrase is the one referred to "Houston", as other people already said, "the storm didn't kill me, the government changed". I'm looking forward to buy the new album. Saluti dall'Italia...

  79. F.... O....

The melodic manner with which the music coalesces with Stipe's incredible singing is unrivaled. That damn mandolin touches my cerebral senses in places I never knew existed. This is music. Welcome back REM - we missed you!!

  80. R.... ....

    impresionante !!
    maravilloso!!
    exelente!!
    ellos son mis REM

  81. T.... B....

@themooddisorders most of their stuff is that way :-)

  82. e.... ....

great! this place is the beat of my heart...

  83. D.... B....

I finally figured out the lyrics. It has an obvious meaning and an intellectual meaning

  84. P.... ....

    Missed u!

  85. c.... ....

    perfect

  86. K.... P....

" mine smell like honey ... UH mine smell like honey ... UH UH " kinda hot huh guys ...

  87. E.... ....

    fantastico...!!

    increible!!

    espectacular cancion!!!

    -_O

  88. J.... K....

    Another great one!

  89. J.... K....

    Another great one!!!!

  90. s.... t....

I hated this song when I first heard it but it's been growing on me. This happens each time R.E.M. releases a new album. One great thing about their music is you often have to invest some time, occasionally dozens of re-plays until you "get it". The pay off is much more rewarding than the instantly catchy, radio friendly crap, that the legions of suburban American zombies seem to enjoy feeding on. The radio stations would go out of business if the had to play legitimate music like this!

  91. A.... F....

@rollthebones18: I was thinking the same thing about this one. It's "Houston Part II." Especially with the "storm didn't kill me, the government changed" line. But I agree, I think it works well. Eagerly awaiting the release of this album. I thought Accelerate was REM's best album since Automatic, but it seems like Collapse picks up where Accelerate left off, but adds the dimension and depth that Accelerate was missing. This will be their best record in 20 years. Can't wait!

  93. h.... ....

The start of the song reminds me a lot of the start of Disappear, which isn't a bad thing since Reveal was a great album. Looking forward to this one!

  94. A.... B....

Thank You Michael for Your voice.

  95. e.... ....
