R.E.M. - Mine Smell Like Honey Lyrics

I would dare you, but I know I don't need to
You're going to do just what you want to
You're going to take the leading chair at the fairground
You're going to sing the praises of your fruit

Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like hu- hu- hu- honey, uh!

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper!
Dig a hole! Dig it deeper, deeper!
Track a trail of honey through it all

If the end comes faster than we had expected
And predictions lead us to the final fall
If the flowers crack the grave and leave the pattern of the pavement
I can hear you shouting over it all

Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like honey, uh!
Mine smell like hu- hu- hu- honey, uh!

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper!
Dig a hole! Dig it deeper, deeper!
Track a trail of honey through it all

Dig a hole, dig it deeper, deeper!
Climb a mountain, climb it steeper, steeper!
Dig a hole! Dig it deeper, deeper!
Track a trail of honey through it all

You track a trail of honey through it all
You track a trail of honey

  1. 1.... ....

Wow that video was so homo. Still a good song - best played extremely loud.

  2. t.... ....

    Team building exercise.

  3. 1.... ....

My fave album is Fables of the Reconstruction. Other top albums:
    Green
    Life's Rich Pageant
    Automatic For The People
    Murmur
    Monster

I have not bought Around the Sun and Accelerate. I sampled them but was disappointed.
As to all their other albums, there might be a few light-weights. But the magic of REM was their tunefulness. They could not make a bad song. Much of this is due to Mike Mills who does bass and piano. And, of course, Mr Stipe. This guy could move you singing the dictionary aloud.

  4. B.... B....

    If I'm a gold digger...
Why did I volunteer for free on your oyster boat when everyone else got paid?

  5. M.... J....

This song makes my heart ache... 😢😞

  6. B.... B....

You don't have to date losers to appease anyone...

  7. B.... B....

This is my baby when he's sour

  8. F.... O....

As a forever R.E.M fan I have to say, this song is just lame, bland and embarrassing even with its interesting chord changes and existing melody

  9. k.... i....

This sounds like a TV sitcom opening credits song.

  10. B.... B....

    Musical chemtrail

  11. b.... B....

    Pretty gross.

  12. A.... F....

    it's for kurt!

  13. D.... G....

    Another great song.

  14. W.... D....

I wonder if they rolled him -down- the stairs and played it backwards.

  15. R.... G....

Wow, Michael really went thru it on this one. I hope his back is ok after all that.

  16. C.... K....

    I love this song!

  17. J.... K....

    honey, huh?

  18. J.... K....

    honey, huh?

  19. M.... ....

    I LOVE YOU MICHAEL STIPE!

  20. P.... B....

I miss REM more and more with the swiftly passing years. What an album to finish on. Up there with New Adventures and Automatic in my opinion.

    P.... B....

We share the same opinion. Collapse is in my too 5 REM albums alongside New Adventures, Automatic, , LifesRP and Murmur

    P.... B....

...and i also miss them a lot. They broke up on an all time high creatively. Pity, as i still crave new material from them.

    P.... B....

I agree George. But now I have accepted that as a band with integrity, they won't formally get back together again. So we won't get one of those embarrassing only for the money tours. But I am sure they will do something, sometime....

    P.... B....

    Let's hope they do :-)

  21. D.... S....

thank god they broke up before embarrassing themselves even more

    D.... S....

+d. smith too bad you don't do the same before dying.

    D.... S....

  33. J.... F....

No no nooo xq c desintegraron :'( noo esta canción es buenísima q grandes sonnnnnn(Y)

  34. J.... ....

    I agree.

  35. T.... ....

Mine smells like the birds & the bees. I guess if you put that equation together, your answer is honey!

  36. p.... ....

Yeah, I think Accelerate is ridiculously underrated. Probably my 4th favourite behind Automatic, Murmur and New Adventures. Collapse Into Now had some great stuff too, though it felt a bit "it's good, but we've been here before".

  37. D.... ....

You saying Michael is old makes me feel old.

  38. h.... ....

What is this song talking about????!??!?!?!? i need it urgently for a project.

  39. d.... ....

My girlfriend's pussy smells like honey.

  40. j.... ....

Neat trick. 30-year bookend to "Radio Free Europe." Perfect career symmetry.

  41. i.... ....

    Mine smell like cabbage!

  42. G.... S....

hell, rem aren't going into space, I have a feeeling we're gonna hear a lot more from these gentlemen than we might think. HELL! They haven't been split up for a month yet and they're already releasing 3 new pieces? I'd say that's a record!!!! HA!
    anywho
lOVE yA mICHAEL!!!!! tHIS vIDEO iS aNOTHER cLASSIC Masterpiece, godamn cap locks...

  43. i.... k....

    @deloreanized oh shut up.

  44. S.... ....

Thank you for always being there R.E.M. I love you and I'll never forget you.

  45. r.... ....

@GAdawgsfan93 Ok... If I live in Alpharetta GA how do I get to see REM again? I know they play once in a awhile in Athens, but still. Man, I really need to see REM one last time,

  46. d.... ....

I'm sad about the disband of R.E.M., i loved most of your songs!!!

  47. D.... ....

Goodbye R.E.M., you just give me a wonderful music since I am 10, I'm 17 now, and I just wanted to say : Thank you. Love from France.

  48. r.... ....

Please... One more show in Atlanta... PLEASE!!!

  49. K.... V....

@deloreanized let's face it though there's been a gazillion songs written everything is going to sound like something else, especially when you're only using 3 or 4 chords.

  50. f.... ....

sooooooooooo sad now they decided to "walk away" :'( your music still remains in our hearts, don't worry!

  51. D.... ....

    rock is not dead!!!!

  52. E.... ....

    @deloreanized

I hear the similarity, but it does not sound note for note. Same intention, tempo, and style, yeah.

  53. a.... ....

i wonder what the meaning of this song is

  54. d.... ....

The chorus sounds like a xerox copy of THE CURE'S JUST LIKE HEAVEN. Chord by chord. Note by note. Same tempo. Same intention.

  55. M.... L....

    He's a fuckin' boss

  56. v.... ....

I like the new record. I still like Automatic and Monster better. I like songs on all their albums, but Hi Fi, Up, Reveal, Around The Sun, and Accelerate have some boring moments that none of the 80's and early 90's albums didn't have. Also..."Shiny Happy People," is not their best song, but it is not the garbage some say it is. It is cut from the same cloth as "Stand," and it is a commercial song. Nothing wrong with that.

  57. S.... ....

when you are from rem ppl make you go up stairs you dont have to make any effort :U

  58. 6.... ....

@tommyrock69 mmm no automatic and new adventures were better than cin....song like everybody hurts, man on the moon, find the river ,leave, how the west was gone,e-bow and some others are cleary betters than the new material....is objective;-)

  59. J.... B....

    ART never dies,only Evolves

  60. R.... K....

@jollygiant9 Yep. Better than New Adventures. Automatic for the People came out 20 years ago. It's a hint. Good night and enjoy.

  61. R.... K....

@Syrus2006 Perhaps I should have said, "When they started out brilliantly." Lyrics can be re-written or just mumbled I suppose. ;)

  62. S.... ....

@tommyrock69 WHEN they were brilliant he says.

Don't get me wrong I agree with you 100% though. XD

  63. m.... ....

The real beauty is...reading the comments here, then suddenly realizing that these fans are intelligent well-spoken fans. Not anything like you would find say around...ah, maybe each one of you could fill in the blank here. R.E.M. wonderful.

  64. R.... ....

    @ThePufferFash interesting...

  65. R.... ....

@ThePufferFash I don't think I drew the walls- I think they exist. I'm guessing it's an ideological, maybe a moral division. If they did not exist there would not be this intense dislike of republicans vs. dems, and vice versa. Just one issue- abortion rights- and there are few who can say it's NOT divisive. That's only ONE issue, (imho- the main issue) but many, many more- which is why the walls truly exist.

  66. R.... ....

@tommyrock69 I like the comment but you can not deny that R.E.M. has gone WAY too political in their rocking. I used to buy their stuff without thinking but now I'm wondering- how can I put up with the bulls**** of them telling ME how everything non democratic is inherently evil???!!!! Their music rocks but their pulpit is reeking of liberalism and left leaning b.s. Sorry- you guys lost me when Billy Berry left the group I guess.

  67. B.... A....

Ha Ha!! That Sarah Palin comment is hilarious. Time to get a life.

  68. G.... L....

Is saying "mine smell like honey" a good thing or a bad thing. Is it just part of human nature? I guess.

  69. t.... ....

Could this song be about Sarah Palin and her inflated sense of self? He would dare her to run for Pres. but knows he doesn't need to because she's such an egomaniac that she's going to do what she wants to do anyway. Everything around her is a train wreck, but she continues to see herself as superior despite ruining everything she touches (hers smell like honey). In the meantime, her delusions of grandeur could be the end of us all because her mindless followers could make her President.

  70. j.... ....

At face value, lame, but as an insight into us humans, awesome.

"Mine Smell Like Honey." A testament to how at the end of the day, no matter what you achieve, sometimes it's the little things you say and do that you're remembered for most.

"yeah, he found the cure for cancer, blah blah blah...but what i remember most about him, was the fact he used to sing the praises of his food"

Sure, a song about farts. But delivered with relish.

  71. t.... ....

@thomasmoredamian "Mine smell like honey," sounds like something on a greeting card? Where are you getting your greeting cards?! :) Also, the lyrics on this album are generally very affirmative, optimiistic. I have no idea why you think otherwise.

  72. T.... M....

Hate to say it, but so much of this stuff sounds like something you'd read in a greeting card or on some old lady's living room's coffee table, that I can't figure out if these guys want it to sound like that, as some sort of "statement", or whether their poetic/suffering sensibilities have just gotten outta hand. Will somebody PLEASE try to cheer little Michael up? Please?

  73. T.... M....

These guy are so full of themselves, and still so rooted in college-art-school sensibility that it is hard to listen to more than thirty seconds of their new stuff. (with the exception of UBerlin, which is a masterpiece, thank you Michael) Now that Stipe has been deified by the press and has only Bruce and Bob to contend with as lyricist of the century, his angst and poetic sensiblity is getting a bit hard to take...but I do give him props for trying hard. The getup he wears in this video is ?

  74. t.... ....

This video is similar to Drive insofar as Michael is being moved by the hands of others. Drive was a reflection on their advancing age and their growing age difference with their fans. I wonder whether this video represents a reflection on the smaller, older fan base that carries them upward today...

  75. c.... ....

    one awesome band
    one stupid song

  76. t.... ....

Go on, keep making a fool of yourself. If anyone bothered to track the inanity of this exchange it would be evident to all who is manifesting "imbecile qualities." You've created a record of your meager intellect, and of your immaturity, for all to read for themselves here. Nice attempt at revision though. Now go stomp your feet and have a temper tantrum on someone else's time.

  77. c.... ....

@theyself ok, now you're just making me laugh. You have these...whats the word..these imbecilic qualities which im afraid you have no idea are there. Who is a complete bitch like you to know what a "real man" is. That pretty much seals the deal about you. Yes i knew what you meant, becuase linear minds like yours are transparent, and any "real" man will have a lot of fun toying with imbeciles like yourself. And i'll take that as a BIG no to your little tits.

  78. t.... ....

@codern I'm afraid you have no idea what a contradiction is, much less are you capable of recognizing one. My claim about you not being a real man is based on the evidence: a real man does not allow himself to get so upset over a criticism. Your claim about "a real woman" is based on nothing. Moreover, do you think you belittle anyone other than yourself by disrespecting women everywhere by asking about my "big tits"? It's time for you to go away, little boy.

  79. c.... ....

@theyself seemingly articulate disposition and complete pseudo-intellectual approach..i.it makes me have enough respect for you to ask you the following question...do you at least have big tits?

  80. c.... ....

@theyself so says you..someone who has proven to contradict themselves on every merit. And now you're rambling and once again i prove my point. A real man? What are you talking about "a real man"...therefore i can entertain the same argument that you're not a real "woman". I have a dick, therefore, im a real man. Now what are my threats. You are increasingly sounding like a dumb university student who is completely deluded, missing every point, unreasonable, disingenuous with your

  81. t.... ....

name calling and stupid, childish threats. If you cannot respond like an adult maybe you should give up your internet privileges.

  82. t.... ....

@codern As if to provide further evidence of your immaturity your last remarks drain even more from the maturity pool. A real man wouldn't get so easily flustered over any of this; and over what, exactly, are you so exercised? For truthfully being called out for rambling? The fault lies with you, not the messenger. You could easily have averted any further response by saying, "Oh, I can see why you'd consider those thoughts disconnected. Here is what I meant?" Instead, you resort to

  83. c.... ....

@theyself not be "miz Maturity" so i conclude 2 things...1st..you are full of shit, and 2nd. you are indeed a pseudo-intellectual (who really doesnt even qualify for that.)

  84. c.... ....

@theyself its not so much name calling, rather a precise term that best describes you. If there was a more tasteful word, trust me, id use it. You must be a woman, only a woman can reply so tastefully sarcastically and sound like a complete bitch although konwing they can get away with it becuase a man can't fulfill their urge by decking you..which btw, you clearly deserve for turning this into a potential youtube war..which i am pumped for! So bring it. Any1 who even lets it get to this can

  85. t.... ....

@codern Childish name-calling is the only recourse of the childish mind. If this is the best your "education" could produce you might consider filing a lawsuit to recover your losses.

  86. c.... ....

@theyself I would love to know just exactly how it wasn't enlightening or thorough. I am "conversing'' who clearly has no clue what I was trying to say. I am in the industry and I have done articles on the entertainment and music industry throughout its "evolution". I explain it more or less the same way every time and people easily understand and appreciate it. You are the only i've encountered (albeit in the online world) who hasnt. Coincidence? Or just a reflection of your pretentious and

  87. t.... ....

@codern Your point was neither thorough nor enlightening, and the fact that you cannot recongize this is all the evidence I need not to waste any more time on this "conversation." Maybe if you get an education you'll be able to recognize the difference between intellectual and pseudo-intellectual.

  88. C.... S....

    mine smell like honey... :-)

  89. c.... ....

@theyself Excuse me professor but I made my point thorough and enlightening. But perhaps it was just a bit too enigmatic for your literal mind. And yes, that is indeed why you should write an article. I think it does warrant such an "expenditure" of your time, esp. since I know your gonna expend more of your time making another pseudo-intellectual reply.

  90. t.... ....

@codern Well, since I grade writing as part of my career I can tell you that you weren't being clear. If you expect a response, then you should write in a way that invites one rather than making someone wade through disconnected thoughts. "Go write an article"? Why? Because I think you're wrong about dismissing this album? That hardly warrants such an expenditure of time and effort.

  91. c.... ....

@theyself 1) I simply read differently 2) I think i was being very clear, thorough, elaborate and fair. (And as i recall, i wasn't insulting.) 3) If this is so important to you then go write an article. Hows that for concise

  92. t.... ....

@codern I've read the comment, made by Buck, that it's their best album in 20 years. It is not a reference to Out of Time. It is refering to Automatic and the comparison being made is exactly the one I already stated. As for the rest, you're rambling and not making a clear, concise point.

  93. c.... ....

@theyself if it were in fact as good or better than REMS Automatic...becuase you dont know me or my history..so once again, a new band...no wouldnt go down like that.

  94. c.... ....

@theyself becasue, when you think of another band making this same album, you're still really thinking of REM...if it were another band, than no1 would know them for their history of being a great band and creating a chemistry. I can tell you i have written songs that ARE easily right on par with Automatic and you (generally speaking) would 1st doubt it, then even if you heard it, you'd think its good, but becuase im REM, my music (no matter how good) wouldnt have the same effect on u...even

  95. c.... ....

@theyself well it certainly wouldnt be regarded as bad music...but a new band would never put out an album like this, this album oozes a veteran band...no new artist would have the audacity and nervy confidence to write a song called "mine smell like honey"..in terms of music itself, a new band couldnt get an album to sound as sonically produced and professional cause they dont have the resources...in terms of songwriting alone, it would get camouflaged with several other bands..reason:

  96. c.... ....

@theyself back to my initial statement, they've just lost their magic...but who cares, the magic still remains when you listen to their old and "good" stuff, where the magic was captured.

  97. c.... ....

@theyself Well Automatic was clearly their masterpiece. But they were comparing it to Out of time. There was actually a youtube thing about it. And i remember a reference to "me in honey" and "mine smell like honey" (which im sorry, but i feel lame just saying that) IN any case, its always subject to argument..but i thin their last best album was 'Reveal" and after that they started dragging, lost chemistry, trying subconsciously (imho) to recapture their youth and sound "modern"..so i come

  98. t.... ....

@codern A rabid base of fans and critical acclaim, even if this base is small, is still far different than the luke warm reception Collapse has received because it was by a band of R.E.M.'s stature. I do think that if this album were made by a new, unknown band it would have had this kind of wildly enthusiastic critical reception and, perhaps, small but rabid fan base.
