R.E.M. - Every Day Is Yours To Win Lyrics

Possibly one of the most beautiful songs of our time: it says that you should just be yourself. Don't put any thought into what anyone else thinks unless it's positive. You are your own person and you deserve happiness, every day. Express yourself how you wish to and be unique! It's the diversity in the world that makes it so beautiful. After all, uniqueness is how heroes are made.

Does anyone have a meaning to this song? I always thought it was about depression, for example, 'The stink and the fight, and the road ahead of you' and 'I cannot tell a lie, it's not all cherry pie' and 'hey yeah, I know' sounds like it could be the writer relating to the situation (depression).
Then "Every day is yours to win, that's how heroes are made" could be advice to whoever is suffering? I don't know. Just my observations

I’m surprised that the like/dislike ratio for this video is about 7:1 which I think is quite low. (For comparison the “Gucci Gang” ratio is about 6:1 and a lot of people hate that song). I guess ordinary people have no place in pop star videos... (To be clear, I've liked the video myself.)

What a great great song. REM, always delivering simple and catchy melodies and deep but not cheesy message. Michael Stipe is probably one of the best lyricists of all time. With many gems that often go under the radar. Like this one.

Years and years passed away, and i didnt know they name, becasue i was really Young, when i listen to they. then i finally found they, i was the happiest people on the world. Am I the only one that sees that satire of the song? Hence the simple chorus that you can't help singing along to: "hey yeah, hey yeah, i know...". Lyrics that have become overused. Plus the people all over the Youtubes thinking that their vids make every day theirs to win. Yeah... probably just me. xD
