R.E.M. - Cuyahoga Lyrics

Let's put our heads together and start a new country up
Our father's father's father tried, erased the parts he didn't like
Let's try to fill it in, bank the quarry river, swim
We knee-skinned it you and me, we knee-skinned that river red

This is where we walked
This is where we swam
Take a picture here
Take a souvenir

This land is the land of ours, this river runs red over it
We knee-skinned it you and me, we knee-skinned that river red
And we gathered up our friends, bank the quarry river, swim
We knee-skinned it you and me, underneath the river bed

This is where we walked
This is where we swam
Take a picture here
Take a souvenir

Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone

Let's put our heads together and start a new country up
Up underneath the river bed we'll burn the river down

This is where they walked, swam
Hunted, danced and sang
Take a picture here
Take a souvenir

Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone

Rewrite the book and rule the pages
Saving face, secured in faith
Bury, burn the waste behind you

This land is the land of ours, this river runs red over it
We are not your allies, we cannot defend

This is where they walked
This is where they swam
Take a picture here
Take a souvenir

Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone
Cuyahoga
Cuyahoga, gone

Listen to the lyrics. The words are so true.

  2. G.... S....

Probably my favorite REM song. Not for the verse, but for the chorus with the excellent Mike Mills singing harmony. Cuyahoga, a river in Ohio so polluted it caught fire. A song that harkens back to 1986, a time when the political left stood for something other than intersectionality and oppression studies.

  3. D.... S....

Lifes Rich Pageant is an incredible album. It's truly one of the best albums of the 80s.

    g.... ....

Without a doubt. Top ten for me, probably.

  20. L.... M....

I just had to school a Youtube shill on REM on the reason and history regarding this song. Sorry, but today's generation is pathetically lazy and uneducated. I miss good college bands like this

  22. D.... B....

    My favorite R.E.M. album.

  23. D.... S....

    Great album!

  24. t.... ....

    Woke me up in highschool

  25. t.... ....

    This is their best song.
And that is saying a lot.
"Let's put our heads together , and start a new country up"

    t.... ....

When this band were at their best, they were untouchable. This is as close to perfection as any rock song has ever managed.

    t.... ....

    Right on.

  26. T.... W....

is everything fixed going to be destroyed? Will the rivers burn again under Trump?

    T.... W....

the fucking scumbag doesnt even care about the environment sadly

    T.... W....

Thomas Wells. Or they could burn with the enriched uranium hillary sold the russians...or the corpses of the now 37 people who had dirt on them and mysteriously died..or the women her husband grabbed that she silenced..or the illegal child sex ring they operate..or all the illegals they just want to let in the country to kill us..take your pick...

    T.... W....

Steve Ala Take your hatred an conspiracy theories someone else. People came here to enjoy a song that intelligently addresses the issue of the Native American genocide and how the white settlers took the land. It refers specifically to the Cuyahoga River as well, which was massively polluted later on.

    T.... W....

Also, immigrants are among the hardest working people in this country. Facts don't care about your hateful feelings.

    T.... W....

Steve wound up on this page somehow. He misspelled Ted Nugent.

  27. M.... ....

I grew up in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. They pronounced Cuyahoga wrong (the "cuy" rhymes with "buy") but the song still touched a chord with me.

    M.... ....

i was just thinking that! Thank you. The white man is saying it wrong. They aren't even native here, they dont get to say what is wrong or right.

    M.... ....

@lizett Alvarado You are one seriously small minded person.

    M.... ....

@DTOM, ¿eStamos? lmao but it is true...

    M.... ....

@DTOM, ¿eStamos? so I am small minded because I am saying natives pronounce it the way he is pronouncing it? It is true that white people white wash everything, die mad about it, bitch.

    M.... ....

@DTOM, ¿eStamos? your white fragility is showing..

  28. T.... ....

    What
    a tune!

  29. A.... U....

keep it in mind somehow. Youtube will die soon. Myths are that kind we will not - we cannot - get rid off, they'll keep us social once democracy is gone.

  30. A.... ....

"Our father's father's father tried, erased the parts he didn't like."

    A.... ....

    What a beautiful lyric.

  31. M.... S....

    This song is incredible.

  32. A.... G....

God Bill's drumming on this is so amazing.

    A.... G....

Yes totally agree! Very underrated drummer,; never gets enough props. I drum in a REM tribute band based in ATL (only a 3-piece band) and I had to really focus to learn his style and personality on drums. He plays his own way and I dig it! We only play songs from Chronic Town to Green and we sell 200+ tickets every time we play. Most attendees are 35 -55 yrs old. They freak out to all their old stuff. Have to say we do it very well....

    A.... G....

    Webb Vandiver.
I am in ATL, when next do you guys play ?

    A.... G....

this song is perfect and i agree

    A.... G....

I believe Kenny Aronoff, drummer for John Cougar, worked on the sound with Bill Berry. I find the pop of their snares to be quite similar. Great drummers.

  33. C.... D....

Probably one of their better songs....

    C.... D....

Well at least we agree on that.

    C.... D....

In my humble subjective opinion, one their best ever songs.
