R.E.M. - Catapult Lyrics

We were little boys, we were little girls
It's nine o'clock, don't try to turn it off
Cowered in a hole, ope your mouth

Did we miss anything, did we miss anything
Did we miss anything, did we miss anything
Catapult (catapult), catapult
Catapult (catapult), catapult

We were little boys, we were little girls
It's nine o'clock, don't try to turn it off
Cowered in a hole, ope your mouth
We in step, in hand, your mother remembers this
Hear the howl of the rope, a question

Did we miss anything, did we miss anything
Did we miss anything, did we miss anything
Catapult (catapult), catapult
Catapult (catapult), catapult

March could be darker, March could be darker
Catapult (catapult), catapult
Catapult (catapult), catapult

We were little boys, we were little girls
It's nine o'clock, don't try to turn it off
Cowered in a hole, open your mouth
We in step, in hand, your mother remembers this
Hear the howl of the rope, a question

Did we miss anything, did we miss anything
Did we miss anything, did we miss anything
Catapult (catapult), catapult
Catapult (catapult), catapult

R.E.M. Catapult Comments

This song reminds me of how stupid I was to be following mainstream music when gems like this resonate.

  2. N.... S....

It seems the lyrics to this one are wrong pretty much everywhere you can find them. Stipe's mumbling is hard to decipher sometimes and incoherent in the early days, but this song actually makes sense with the correct lyrics: "Opie mouth" should be "open your mouth" as confirmed by Stipe, and my best guess for the bridge ("March could be darker") is "The porch could be a target / the barn should be a target," which makes it pretty clear this song is about a childhood memory of playing with a small catapult, or maybe just a slingshot, but "catapult" sounded cooler. "9 o' clock" is bedtime, "did we miss anything" refers to targets missed, etc.

  3. S.... ....

I think this song is about reincarnation!..
    Catapult back into life!

Guy Garvey's Finest Hour brought me here

Now I know I wanna get this album just for that track alone, because it's the kind of track that says "play 20 times in a row"

    b.... ....

I've listened to this album more than all others, and I started listening to it in '84. It's magical.

The intro sounds a lot like Joy Division Ceremony

  16. j.... d....

This song alone smokes almost anything they did in the 90's.

    j.... d....

+toyoscio Not to mention Man on the Moon.

I agree that many songs of their 90s albums are better than Catapult. But the ones you mentioned are among their weaker stuff.

    j.... d....

Agreed! This song is one of the strongest on the album, and this is their best album by a long shot

Without a doubt, MURMUR is REM's best album. Some of the best written and composed songs in their extensive history. Yes, Automatic for the People was good but Murmur is an album that has aged quite well and the four piece lineup sounded the best on this recording. Peter's jangly guitar sounded so good on this album especially in Catapult. I personally think nothing they did after Murmur compares to this album. I love all the IRS stuff the best in comparison to their WB work but Murmur for its time is so landmark. I was in the 10th grade when this was released and nothing else at this time sounded like Murmur. Long live BERRY BUCK MILLS & STIPE. I always used to get a kick out of how this was written on all the IRS albums.

@Vutraitojeto This is an excellent song-but the song before this "Perfect Circle" I believe is the best song they ever made.
