Rehab - Advice From Within (Skit) Lyrics

[Quote from Michael Almayreda’s 1994 black and white vampire film "Nadja":]

[Nadja:]
"No. See how you bury the primary pain
It goes underground
It seeps into the water supply
You're poisoned
All your relationships are poisoned
You must dare to dredge up the primary pain."

[Lucy:]
"What good would it do?"

[Nadja:]
"It frees you. For myself, I'm not afraid of anything
It's true, life is full of pain but the pain I feel is the pain of fleeting joy."

  2. K.... S....

    Lmao laurence fishburn

  3. E.... e....

Will Smith rejected play Neo in Matrix, so it doesn't fit for Morpheus.

  4. O.... E....

It took some balls to make this.
Oh... oh... sorry, I meant ovaries.

  5. W.... ....

I'm a black comic book artist/writer, & I didn't know about this cliche. I have 2 main stories, & so far, I don't think I have a black character that fits this. I think the closest is "Pandora Pendulum," who is the best friend to the main character, Dweller Bloodmoon, who yes is white. (technically gray since he's a Flesh Golem, but he was white when he was alive.) However, she's not helping him, it's more like he's helping her get back to her family.

Pandora isn't the main character, but since Dweller is helping her, does that mean she's a Magical Negro?

  6. E.... D....

So he's not going to heal us? Also screw you morbius

  7. M.... B....

"I'm so tired boss". The one playing Oda Mae was spot on. I didnt even realize they were magical negro tropes til now

  8. R.... J....

Lady in wheelchair: "so hes not going to heal us?"

  12. L.... L....

    College humor cameo lmao

  13. R.... U....

3:40 bulshit I live in Detroit
    "You lost white boy?"
    "It's white man"

  14. D.... L....

I love the fact that in these movies they didn't have to hire an African person to play alot or any of these rolls but because they did they're getting shit for it now because it's supposed to be racist but if they didn't they would have got shit for not hiring black people and being racist, so I guess this is a case damned-if-you-do damned-if-you-don't.

    D.... L....

It's a fuckin' sketch! Do you see the real actors who portrayed the characters in this, no. Seems like you're the one that's sensitive. It's just like black people jokin' about blacks dying first in horror movies or white women tripping when the monster is chasing them. It's just comedy.

    D.... L....

@D Solo I don't get "Do you see the real actors who portrayed the characters in this, no" argument, so what if they aren't in it I never said they said their old movies are racist. We live in an age were millennial and younger keep re-evaluate old work to try and make them offensive and that is the problem. Also Where did they make fun of those horror film tropes? Anyway I am railing against the people behind this video because I am certain they are aligned with self proclaimed media critics who love to say every thing is sexist, racist, or homophobic and they need to point it all out, The type that use arbitrary test regardless of whether they make sense or not like complaining that Shaw shank Redemption is sexist because it doesn't pass the Bechtel test. Even though the movie takes place in a all male prison. and yes that was a real argument from some one who is or at least was taken seriously for a time. This sketch is the embodiment of that logic to me

    D.... L....

@Drake Loki This criticism wouldn't be necessary if Black people had a plethora of roles they were given, but they weren't. This sketch is a criticism of the type of roles Hollywood deemed suitable for Black people to play. Rather than be leads, Hollywood was content to have black actors be supporting characters whose sole narrative purpose was to help white people reach their goal and then piss off. Take Scatman Crothers in "The Shining" for instance. He literally shows up on the screen for the first time hearing a little white boy's mental distress (unexplained magical power) and then travels miles and possibly crosses state lines to warn said White boy and die in the process. That is the textbook example of what this sketch is making fun of. Scatman Crothers was a very talented man, but Hollywood only saw him as one thing: A Magical Negro. Even Viola Davis says she regretted ever taking the maid role in "The Help" for this reason, but Davis is now an A List actress who doesn't have to play magical negro roles. We laugh about these things, because it's healing and reassuring to recognize that other people see the innate silliness in this whole thing and we're not crazy for thinking something was wrong with it.

  15. R.... B....

Bruh I died when morpheus was her dad

    So wrong.

  19. C.... M....

I watched this yesterday. This Ish is funny AF. Hilarious!

  20. K.... K....

Really think about it tho... if slavery never happened, then about 95% of the black population in America would still be in Africa. How do you get to that timeline?

  21. G.... G....

This is awesome I can’t wait to binge watch this show 😍

  22. x.... ....

"No negro, you're driving yourself today"
    "No white woman?"
    So true 😂😂😂

    x.... ....

"If I can't drive a white person? We all gonna die today!" 😅😂🤣

  23. J.... S....

I just finished writing a paper about the Magical Negro stereotype lmao thanks Netflix, this helps buttress my argument that the media needs to stop with this tired ass trope

  24. C.... B....

So sickened with blatant black racism. Fuck this show.
I wouldn't support it if it was whites doing it to blacks & it's no difference for black folks. Racism is Racism

  25. G.... L....

They stole this bit from Key and Peele: https://youtu.be/WJfhB3Vj_G8

  26. f.... ....

Key and Peele did the "Magical Negro" Sketch 5 years before they did.

    f.... ....

@E. Rage The core idea is basically stolen from Key and Peele. It doesn't matter if the execution is different

    f.... ....

@Gen. Layabout The core idea is very basic and can be done again and again. By that logic, bank heists movies and love stories should never be told ever again.

    f.... ....

That's like saying you can't make a story or game or movie if it has any relation to another. So no more space movies/shows because star trek did it first. No more fantasy because of Lord of the rings. No more love stories because of Shakespeare.

    f.... ....

@hyperx72 No one said they can't do it, dumbass...we're just pointing out that it's not original. Learn how to read dumbass

  27. V.... K....

I am amazed of how racist this is... :(

    V.... K....

If you saw the movies and read about the "magical negro" trope, you will understand how it isn't.

  28. P.... I....

Way to fuck up a good joke!

  29. D.... ....

    Yooooo this is hilarious!!

  30. N.... N....

  38. P.... B....

1:28 took me TF OUTTTTTTTT 😂

  39. a.... h....

They say white. All these narratives are by Jewish people. Everyone of those films are from Jewish people. In fact most of what we know about slavery was written by Jewish people. So stop just throwing every white person into the same category with the most privileged race in the world. In fact no one is cooned in movies more than the midwestern white guy. Ashkenazi Jews just look white. They’re not.

  40. g.... o....

Yep. This is exactly why Netflix is going broke. They lost over 133,000 US subscribers in the second quarter of 2019 alone. Who do they think they're pandering to, insulting black intelligence like this? Anyone with half a brain knows there is no racial monopoly on these types of characters. Netflix: helping the media divide America, one deceitful incitement at a time :-) Yay!

    g.... o....

    triggered

    g.... o....

    @girlstalkinsmack dereggirt

    g.... o....

You cant be this dense man. Netflix probably lost 133.000 subs because 1. price increases and 2. other streaming services. The magical negro trope is legitimately a thing and so is the white savior.

    g.... o....

@OtakuSamSay Said the man who didn't even comprehend what I wrote, and doesn't know how to use an apostrophe to boot, lol! None of your points conflict with any of mine. Try rereading my comment, paying close attention to contextualized words like "alone" and "monopoly." Better yet, try reading an article about Netflix's decline, its chronology, and its relationship to the matter I discussed before dragging your knuckles across a keyboard ;-)

    g.... o....

@OtakuSamSay I must recommend Bill Burrs take on the white saviour if you havent seen it already :)

  41. A.... ....

It’s Keisha from Keisha and Andrew! 💕

  45. D.... D....

This is funny.. but it's really a reality sad..

  46. I.... M....

    😂😂😂

  47. K.... ....

Who is seated between Oda Mae and John Coffey?

    K.... ....

That's Red from The Shawshank Redemption.

  51. w.... g....

Ive been enjoying Astronomy Club ever since they had a sketch show on-line through Comedy Central. I'm stoked they finally got a full series on T.V

    w.... g....

    w.... g....

@Kimiko Kasai pretty much the same thing these days.

  52. N.... M....

    yayyyyyyy! Astronomy Club...super dope

  53. D.... ....

Why all the dislikes? It's not that funny but it's an ok sketch. Are my fellow white people butthurt?

  54. D.... A....

Could you imagine, I mean could you imagine in your wildness dream of what black negroes would be doing right at this very second to every downtown store and automobile. Now if this was a white tv show full of only white actors an actresses down granting only black negroes. 👎

  55. o.... u....

    🤣😂🤣😂🤣

  56. N.... T....

Funniest shit I've seen in a minute

  57. C.... E....

I loved this, except, I didn't see Aibileen Clark as much a magical Negro as Minny was, I don't care how much she biologically sabotaged that chocolate pie, she still was more about tending to others than taking care of her 5 kids and dealing with the ramifications and PTSD from being in an abusive relationship.

    C.... E....

I have heard criticism that "The Help" be a white savior movie than a magical negro movie though.

    C.... E....

@Lisa H it can be both.

  58. K.... ....

Shit, so that's where all those people went.

  59. K.... O....

Hilarious and too true. Looking forward to the show.

  60. m.... ....

I'm really surprised he made through the white mile🤣🤣🤣

  61. J.... ....

Funny video, but I disagree that Morgan Freeman's character "Hoke" in Driving Miss Daisy was an example of a the "Magic Negro" trope.
The story itself was a parable about racism and discrimination in the 50s and how Jews and Blacks have both faced discrimination, as well as coping with aging and people with different problems being able to help each other.
The film didn't shy away from racism, nor was Hoke's character 1-dimensional.

    J.... ....

@liquidKi I grew up in the 80's and 90's as well. My siblings and I had friend of diffents skin colors, yet when I was 13 a car full of "white" teens drove past me amd my brother and called us Niggers. That was in the early 90's. So I'm not surprised at all that racism is still an issue. It will remain on as long as the people who benefit from it turn a blind eye to it.

    J.... ....

@Mrs. Stewart Thanks for sharing your story. Obviously racism still exists, and it gets a lot worse than punk kids who yell racial epithets out the window of a moving car. I am arguing that the pop media of 2019 often frames the race conversation as if nothing has improved since the 1950s. I think this is a mistake and serves nothing but to stoke racial tensions when in fact I think racial tensions are subsiding if I stop watching the news and start hanging out with the diverse people in my life.

    J.... ....

That's because you don't understand why Driving Miss Daisy is so cringe worthy to Blacks nor do you understand why the movie is in fact offensive to Black people. You have no right to tell anyone something is not offensive to them. But watching a safe emasculated Blk man drive around a White woman maybe heartwarming to you but it is not to us. His character is in fact a classic portrayal of a magic magic negro. Take the time to read about the classic stereotypial characters written by Hollywood till this day Lena Horne never played a maid for that very reason. You have no understanding of the history of movies and race.

    J.... ....

@Mrs. Stewart Well dumb and teenagers will always call black people, the n-word. You can't control what other people do. The racism that needs to be fought is racism within institution.

    J.... ....

@Kayosan Tully Emasculate? Emasculate? That is a misogynist term. Men should be able to act the way they want to act. How does a man act like a man. Emasculate my ass. Black people need to get over this toxic masculinity shit. Yeah nothing is heartwarming to black people. Black and white people being friends. Not heartwarming. Black person driving around a white person. Racist. White person driving around a black person. Racism. Do you just no want black people and white people not be in movies together because regardless if both characters were equal, you will find something wrong with it.

  62. V.... P....

    I love this

  63. V.... P....

No negro you’re driving yourself today! 😂😂😂😂❤️

  64. m.... ....

Morpheus as the dad is crazy. Thank you for this mind grenade.

  69. J.... S....

This was funny...her dad was Morpheus 😂😂

  70. P.... G....

    WTF was that all about.

    P.... G....

I love this skit. But imagine if white people made a similar skit. It would be super controversial.

  71. O.... L....

The funniest thing is all the white people in the comments who are angry that this sketch written and directed by black people about an overused, racist movie trope isn't catering to them!

    O.... L....

At no point in the video do any of the characters "hate on white people." They are merely trying to live their own lives and think for themselves, but I guess that actively makes some folks uncomfortable!

  72. J.... J....

    “DAM” 😂😂😂😂😂

  73. I.... S....

I pissed myself when Bagger Vance moseys on up to the green

  74. M.... S....

Yo this is some funny shit😂😂🤣🤣

  75. A.... B....

Yeah, damn white people, writing kindhearted black folk into their stories.

  76. F.... C....

This is my favorite sketch ever now.

  77. M.... T....

😂 😂 BRUH this is AMAZING ‼️ Great job y’all. The Morpheus part took me out lmao

    M.... T....

"... the goal is to get from point a to point b without hugging the sickness out of a white person ..." 🤣🤣🤣🤣

    M.... T....

That was my favorite part too lol.

  78. K.... K....

Thank God for the magical people they helped me a lot growing up I hope they don't stop helping you racist black lady lol

    K.... K....

@Jeffrey Kitt but why argue here? I fold lol gg

    K.... K....

@Jaybuza Calling someone a cornball is light. I guess we have different interpretations of being a dick. Coming at whole race because they're enjoying the tearing down of a hurtful depiction placed placed on them by an oppressive society to me that's being a dick!

    K.... K....

@Jeffrey Kitt dont kid yourself. It's been torn down for years. Now it's just victim culture. And trust me I'm japanese and Filipino, no quarrel with whites or blacks. However from what I've seen in the modern day, tis no longer a movement. Its victimization of blacks.

    K.... K....

@Jeffrey Kitt just be happy the whites are going through the heroin epidemic. If theres anything a race would deserve for doing something bad yo another race, its that.other than that, get over it IT SHOULDNT BE ABOUT RACE ANYMORE. why am I talking on here?? Im done.

    K.... K....

@Jeffrey Kitt nonetheless though. I like the skit lol.

  79. s.... .....

    this is not woke #cancel

  80. E.... P....

Serpentine!!! Serpentine!!! oh no look out theres a whitey at 1:00!!!

  81. J.... Z....

I saw Astronomy Club in NYC years ago, and their live show at UCB was INCREDIBLE. I couldn't be more excited for this show. They are some of the funniest people performing right now and a true ensemble that compliments each other in every sketch. Everyone should watch this show!!

    J.... Z....

Astronomy Club is live tonight (11/8/2019) in NYC (doors open at 9.30pm) at Chelsea Music Hall!

  85. G.... b....

i like how brennan was just shoved in the end
    hilarious as always

  86. T.... S....

    Hahahahaha

  87. T.... L....

Has Netflix always been so racist, against white people especially?

    T.... L....

@Tj Lily Uh..I am black, what I'm saying is your completely missing the point. And maybe the reason for this is because you didn't grow up with this tired depiction being a good amount of your representation in tv & film. Point out in this skit where it tell's black people or anyone to disparage white people?? These are jokes that speak directly to a part of black experience. Not everything is meant to include you and that's ok.

    T.... L....

    Okay..lets get triggered..

    T.... L....

@Aaron B whites included blacks in... what?

    T.... L....

Seems you don't understand how racism works look up the word a minority cannot be racist in order to be racist one has to be in a position of power. A Black person can be prejudice but they can't be racist. Prejudice and racism is not the same thing. A whole city of Black people can hate a White person and have no effect on their life. 1 White person can hate a Black person and distroy their life with a phone call. Prevent them from getting a job, have them arrested. If you do not believe that you are ignoring and forgetting American history. There is no minority group in this country with power like that except the super rich. In order to be racist one has to be in a position of power. So Black people & minorities can be prejudice but they hold no power. Institutional racism is not controlled or imposed by minorities it is by the majority

  88. S.... R....

I think they're subscribed to Key & Peele also. Still a good skit.

    S.... R....

babes, Magical Negro is a film criticism term. K&P didn't come up with it.

    S.... R....

@alphacat667 Sure but I mean, come on, which skit was funnier? I'm absolutely going to check this out next month to see if it lives up to In Living Color, Chappelle, and K&P, but this skit just went on for too long without any real degree of subversion. Damn near every K&P skit subverted expectations.

    S.... R....

@alphacat667 I get that, but when was the last magical negro skit you saw? Timing is interesting all I'm sayin
