Regina Spektor - The Light Lyrics
The light was shining in my eyes before I closed them
And all the dreams I had the night before came back
The faces that I'd seen looked so familiar
But they're just strangers, I haven't met them yet
I know that wrong and right can sometimes look the same
So many things I know, but they don't help me
Each day I open up my eyes and start again
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light comes shining in my eyes
So many stories I want to tell you
You and your daddy, you both look like poets
Your eyes are open wide while you are in a dream
I know the morning is wiser than the nighttime
I know there's nothing wrong, I shouldn't feel so down
So many things I know, but they don't help me
Each day I open up my eyes to look around
The sun comes shining in my eyes
The sun comes shining in my eyes
The sun comes shining in my eyes
The sun comes shining in my eyes
Are closed now
Count the stars inside your mind
Count the breaths, count heartbeats
Count the sounds of life
The light was shining in my eyes before I closed them
And all the dreams I had the night before were gone
The faces that I'd seen looked so familiar
But I forgot them all when I saw the sun
I know the morning is wiser than the evening
I know that all of life just happens in between
So many things I know, but they don't help me
Each day I open up my eyes and it begins
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light comes shining in my eyes
The light, the light, the light, the light
The light, the light

We have no choice but to love.
This song is about the wake-live-sleep cycle of daily life and the sad feeling of forgetting the people and places you see in your mind’s eye while dreaming.
This song is a masterpiece...

This song is beautiful,🎶💙💙
I think this song is about her baby with a few shifts of view-point throughout the song. The "I"s and "you"s are sometimes herself, and sometimes her baby. When I look at a baby I kinda feel the same way: the right and wrong seem so vague in their world, while my own faults and profits seem like a faraway dream. As they develop their cognitive function, open up their eyes to look around each day, forgetting and remembering people around them, you want their future to be so beautiful, but also hope they stay just the same - with stars and dreams in their heads. This must be how your mom felt when she looked at you, and how you (will) feel looking at your baby =D. (Also a great birthday gift if you have a friend who works in optics!)
Lizzy Bohne I interpret the song as something sadder. A woman who is suffering with memory loss. Each day she meets her loved ones and she feels entranced by them and wants to hold on to these moments but the next day she forgets them and has to start all over.

Just got back from hearing her sing this at Saltair on the shores of the Great Salt Lake. Performance of a lifetime. I'd heard she is great in concert, but wow. What a beautiful, sweet, talented, caring woman. Pure perfection.
Jane Warner i feel the same

I've pretty sure I've commented on almost all her videos that they are my favorite from this album... this one though is so lovely. makes me happy to reminisce about sad times❤
I keep listening finding something great....yes this an excellent album
My favorite on the album! Reminds me of what I've lost in the most beautiful way. <3
I just bought her album and this is my favourite atm. Though I don't really know what it's about, it makes me feel thingsss:') I would love to know others' interpretation of the song!
The lyrics:

Paper Heart I think during second verse, she's speaking to her child (she had a baby last year), hence the "you and your daddy" line.
Something about its melody is so sad yet hopeful my god it's so beautiful when I listen to it Idk if i wanna smile or cry
Both. Like S&G's "Only Living Boy in New York."
Completely agree. This song *always* makes me tear up, but it's so comforting at the same time. I love that Regina has this power to make us think and feel so much.
I know it's so good, she is a great songwriter, she has so many good songs. I'm so happy I can know from her :)
For people reading this who know a tiny bit about music theory:
I think it's because of how she uses sixths. It's such a special and uncommon interval (compared to the other diatonic ones), and she litters them throughout the chorus while keeping the verses stepwise.
Regina Spektor is a musical and emotional genius. :)
Possibly my favorite from the album as of now because of the feeling it evokes. I've been trying to figure out what it's about. I think it's addressed to her son? Particularly the second verse.
Perfectly, beautifully creepy after watching Westworld ('16 series, '73 film)
First hear, this song always playing in my head
My husband and I listened to her full album yesterday (three times mind you). We both agreed this song was our new favorite by her. So somber and moving.
wow, wish I had a gf to listen to nice music with. Eh, we all win some and lose some.
