Regina Spektor - Eet Lyrics

It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song
You can't believe it; you were always singing along
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember; you try to feel the beat

Eee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet

You spend half of your life trying to fall behind
You're using your headphones to drown out your mind
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember; you try to move your feet

Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet
Ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-ee-
Eet eet eet

[musical interlude]

Someone's deciding whether or not to steal
He opens a window just to feel the chill
He hears that outside a small boy just started to cry
'Cause it's his turn, but his brother won't let him try

[musical interlude]

It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song
You can't believe it; you were always singing along
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember; you try to move your feet
It was so easy and the words so sweet
You can't remember; you try to feel the beat...

December 2010, 15-year-old me was preparing for a bone marrow transplant as the last step in treatment for acute myeloid leukemia and I stumble across this song on iTunes and I become obsessed with it, listening to it constantly. It just got me "It's like forgetting the words to your favorite song" = being diagnosed with cancer "You're using your headphones to drown out your mind" = dealing with treatment. This song is what I would tell everyone to listen to if they want a taste of what was going on in my head. This summer I was out driving and this song came on, I hadn't listened to it in years, as soon as it started I was sobbing.
I simply cannot describe what this song means to me.

Regina is the kind of artist that can write a song where the only word in the chorus is "Eet" and still make it a masterpiece. I saw her in convert a few years ago and she was so innocent and sweet to watch and listen to 💗 what a treasure.

It's incredibly beautiful how spektor describes the Eet life button to correct what was done wrong and to get back return to the path were we at lost from it's a common community phenomenon in people of the book from about 2000 last year's and god did give them the Eet button in future for the present and past mistakes.

Been listening to you for years: Would recognizance that beautiful voice anywhere! Discovered you “on accident “ and looked it up and my music loving son, Syd fell in love too Coin operated boy for instance. Then music from Orange is the new black. I kept saying, “ That sounds like Regina Spector.” My children argued with me until we saw the credits, I’m 55 you and not well ( children- no one knows for that matter.) Would love for us to attend a concert, if you do them, before I couldn’t possibly anymore. KathiDilorenzo @yahoo.com Currently live in AL. Just thought I’d reach out. Regina, a person does not decide to steal ... puts him in condition his life, go hungry or die.

  43. F.... M....

    Regina, it's ironic?
To understand, "Someone's deciding whether or not to steal"
Sometimes, it costs for your own life, and for your neighbor, look at venezuela. open your eyes... Today is Venezuela, tomorrow another.

"When she describes forgetting the words to a favorite song, its her way of saying she (or the character she’s signing as) has forgetting/losing enjoyment in things dear to her. They’re becoming depressed, and their sudden realization surprises them, since things like music were important facets of their lives, something simple and easy to fall back on, but they now can’t seem to enjoy things as easily. They (the chatacter) are losing control over their method of escape from daily life, and they want to try to find the “beat” again, or more accurately, their rhythm/way of life they had followed so nicely before.

Eet is the backspace of a typewriter, but it didn’t delete letters, it wrote over them. The making character in the song can’t go back in time and erase mistakes/signs of depression/regrets, but they can cover them up.

Then they give background to how important music was to them. It was a method of escapism, a getaway from daily life. It what they would hide behind. Now they wish that could still be enough to escape the sadness they fel, but it’s not, so as they try to remember how to enjoy things again, they force themselves to move forward.

when it comes to the whole “stealing and children fighting outside the window” part, I get a little confused. But I think it’s contrasting a more serious situation of possible planned theft to children being selfish by taking someone else’s turn. It does this to show that samilar problems often exist in youth like they do in adulthood, just usually on a smaller scale, even thought it may feel just as big. This expresses a yearning for these simpler times where whenever you were frustrated you could cry in public and, while not necessarily approved, was more acceptable at a young age.

and some of the words repeat here, emphasizing the sense of loss they feel.

basically, they are falling into a depression, or are just realizing that they have been depressed all along, losing enjoyment in things like music, and they want to go back to how things used to be. they try to cover up any signs/mistakes and move forward, all while wistfully reminiscing of when things used to be simplier."

""eet" is an old backspace key on a typewriter. Rather than erasing, it allowed a typist to go back to where the previous letter was, and type over it. Considering Regina is typing on a typewriter in the video, and pressing the "eet" key, maybe she's hoping for a backspace in life? To re-do parts of her life, or get back to the way she felt before?

For me, this is a song about sadness and depression, losing your happiness and your faith, your sense of being. Suddenly the world has changed, and you can't work out why - YOU have changed, you can't remember who you were, and you're trying as hard as you might to get it back: eet, eet, eet."

"‘Eet’ is an adjective used to describe a feeling equivalent to forgetting the words of your favorite song (as mentioned in the very beginning of the song, ‘it’s like forgetting the words to your favorite song’)

the song is mostly telling the story of losing feeling, becoming numb. ‘he opens a window, just to feel the chill’ it basically repeats lyrics that all lead towards the idea of not remembering being happy, and losing those happy memories/feelings."

"It/Eet refers to passage of time. First she relates it to favorite songs. Second verse she relates it to aging and procrastination. Then she mentions humans using music to make it go by faster. In third verse, she describes a human consumed in a morally ambiguous situation, but he becomes aware of passage of time through his memories. He hears children playing.

It “rhymes” with Eet, the key on old keyboards, as described in the other answer."

That's what I found. That's what it means.

This is all quoted from multiple different people who clearly understand it. Don't bother arguing in this reply section.

I'm still in love with this song 17 now!

  50. P.... ....

I've listened to this album many times and it feels like its actually about a dystopian society. A society that has been split into two. Those that stay in mainstream society and augment themselves with cybernetics and technology (The Calculation, One more Time with Feeling, The Man With a Thousand Faces) and then a group of outcasts who refused all that and live on the outskirts of town trying to live what's left of their lives (Folding Chair, Two Birds).
(Dance Anthem of the 80s, Eet, Machine, and Blue Lips) I think are there to paint an image of this world before, during, and after it was taken over by a new ruling class of futurists and cybernetically augmented people.
I imagine (Human of the Year and Laughing with God) might be about how in that world, religion has been turned into another form of control with Human of the Year created as a way to disquiet problematic people with a seemingly great award that actually holds little value. Laughing with God could be a reflection about how silly and distorted their view of God has become.

Now, I know that very most likely that Regina Spektor was not thinking about any of this or had any intention of creating a Concept Album but I think placing the album and the songs in the context of the rise and fall of a dystopian version of the singularity. I've been thinking about this since I first heard this back about 10 years ago. I really hope I'm not the only one that could interpret it that way :)

I heard this song once like five or six years ago and it kept popping into my mind from time to time, and i never could freaking remember the name or the lyrics. All i could think of was the typewriter and a beautiful lady tapping away on it.

Finally found the right key words to put in to google to get the cideo to pop up
    "Female singer typewriter music video"
It was literally that simple, but it took me several years to figure it out.

It s-alec For get-Ting the words to your favorite: saw. Now: here. I don't have favorites. I love tons of people and sometimes I feel that people need a specific and accountable identifiable person to tell them that they are valued for qualities that people around the truly gifted prefer to aggressively deny and refuse to acknowledge. I don't want somebody with that in them to not have anybody ever tell them that. Explicitly and without any ulterior motive.

    Dear person scrolling through this,
I hope you are having a great day, god loves you, and so do I! i hope that no matter what you know it WILL it be ok, this song helped me through, pretty much my whole life really. I hope if not save someone from taking there life, that I can at least bring smiles to you face!
