Regina Spektor - Call Them Brothers Lyrics

That's it, it's split, it won't recover
Just frame the halves and call them brothers
Find your fathers and your mothers
If you remember who they are

Over and over they call us their friends
Can't we find something else to pretend?
Like nobody won and we're safe at the end

In the darkness the film machine's spinning
So let's leave it on
We'll be out in the street
Before anyone knows that we're gone

That's it, it's split, it can't recover
Just frame the halves and call them a whole
And chip at the bricks and fill up your pockets
With the pieces of the wall that you stole

The hunt is on, everyone's chasing
Everyone's chasing a shot
A shot rings out, nobody wants it
Nobody wants it to stop

That's it, it's split, it won't recover
Just frame the halves and call them brothers
Find your fathers and your mothers
If you remember who they are
If you remember, if you remember,
If you remember who they are

This makes me think of Roman and Remus from Sanders Sides. They split during Thomas's development, thus "That's it, it's split" and they can't go back to being a whole thus "It won't recover". They were framed good and bad, friendly and intrusive. "Frame the halves and call them brothers". Roman and Remus are technically brothers, almost twins if not for their separate and different roles.

I was thinking the exact same thing!! Roman and Remus really do fit!!

This is about Germany. The wall split them, so call them brothers. When they tore down the wall a people filled their pockets with the peices of the wall that you stole.

  23. A.... G....

    this song is a masterpiece

  24. A.... G....

I've been in love of this song since 2012.

  25. F.... A....

    So short; so sublime.

  26. M.... B....

I know it's probably obvious, but I think this song is about the Soviet Union. Specifically, a family split up by the East Germany West Germany divide, and not being able to connect again when the Berlin Wall falls. "That's it it split it came recover- frame the halves and call them brothers" is both figurative and literal....and whatever. I hope that made sense.

    M.... B....

You know I truly didn't think about it, I just love her voice and really enjoy singing along and I didn't think about the actual geographic divide, so thank you for the perspective I feel a little dim for not realizing that sooner

    M.... B....

hm maybe you are right, but we will never know, Regina intentionally keeps her songs meanings in secret.
"fill up your pockets with the pieces of the wall that you stole", "the hunt is on" and "everyone's chasing a shot"... it could be about Berlin

    M.... B....

Regina and Jack were born in the USSR (Russia).
Pictures show Moscow and a young couple of 70-80's. The girl has a mink hat and astrakhan coat. The guy has a funny Russian fur hat. These are memories of parents when they were young, about their previous life, which was destroyed by migration. The relationship between children and parents was changed. All this has nothing to do with the German Berlin Wall. This is a nostalgic song.

  41. T.... L....

I just found you and this song as I listened to about 5 of your songs so far....you are sooo AWESOME! I don't like most songs and music...
My brother died not to long ago, and I was looking for something...that connects to him and our life. This is strange, because we do not know who are parents are...and we have this bond and we has a sorrowful unusual life as also our adoptive parents partially and off and on tried to get rid of us and separate us..and we sought each other out and a few others tried to keep us together. Needless to say ..most of these other songs don't fit our life...BUT THIS IS IT
    I love your songs...

    T.... L....

Ruby Levingstone You’ve failed at life if you forgot regina spektor lol

    R.... L....

    @Polarwhisper6 that is so true

  45. N.... S....

i think the song is about how war changes lives...like in the start they were enjoying themselves and then the war starts and things start getting dark and serious..."find your fathers and your mothers if you remember who they are" this line basically points to the future generation who lost parents in the war

    N.... S....

It's about the split of Communist Russia

did you remember palestinians are brothers too when you decided to support Isarel's terror on them ?

  53. L.... L....

    i love the song
but I don't understand wut the video about

    L.... L....

+Lala Leamon Sorry if I'm a little late, but since their married, I'm pretty sure it's just supposed to be home video footage at the beginning. Then a war starts and eventually it starts controlling their entire lives (the masks). I think that maybe the shots where Regina is walking around the busts means her husband went to fight the war? At the end, when there are the still photographs, it means that either the war is still on and her husband came back for reasons unknown, or more likely, the war was so damaging to both of them that their once carefree relationship is tainted, constantly proper and uncomfortable and never the same again.

    L.... L....

+Rosi Moone its OK and nice theory for the video

  54. E.... S....

This song gives me chill every time I listen to it.I really love the way Regina sing. its just perfect

    J.... W....

    Yes i think the same

    J.... W....

Just looked him up. He's wonderful! Thank you guys!

  59. V.... S....

Wish I was Jack Dishel. :(

  60. S.... ....

They both immigrated from Moscow and now they're married. The way I see it this song is about losing touch with your roots, or having your life turned upside down, following the fall of the Soviet Union, and hoping for the best. "Find your fathers and your mothers if you remember who they are."

    S.... ....

    🌤☀️🌈✌️

  61. P.... F....

    It's a perfect 🎶

  62. B.... ....

For some reason I think of two children's parents spliting up and the kids went their separate ways and then it's been so long so they don't really know what there parents look like anymore and the nobody wants it to stop bit is about the relationship but I guess that's just my opinion

  63. .... E....

  64. J.... S....

Esta es la razón por la que amo el anti-folk

  65. S.... J....

    whats this song about?

    S.... J....

    thx....

    S.... J....

About coming to see old friends that used to mean so much to you, but now you have nothing in common and it's more like a torture to be together.

    S.... J....

    @hamletub IMHO

    S.... J....

@Stephanie Jackson A lot of people agree that it's about the fall of the Berlin wall. The two sides were separated, most families never got to see each other. 'Chip at the bricks, fill up your pockets' is something that happened when the wall was torn down. It's very Regina-ish to use history to convey a message, but her songs rarely have the same meaning. (: I'm content with just hearing the lovely sounds.

  66. M.... ....

I love your style of video, they're so cool and amazing!!!!!

  67. K.... M....

    that is beautiful wow:)

  68. G.... R....

  85. T.... ....

I believe, but I may be wrong about this, that this is the version on Only Son's album. There's another version on Regina Spektor's album (What We Saw From The Cheap Seats, deluxe edition). I love both of them but the video for this is just so beautiful.

  86. J.... W....

I love this my friend Mikki sang this and it was good

Point made. I don´t think he´s 'as amazing as her'... but I get why he´s an exception ;D
Ps: I quite Dig his band´s work, don´t get me wrong... Just think it doesn´t fill up her shoes.

  92. K.... C....

Regi really looks like my mother when she was younger in that video! She's stunning! And I love this version of the song so so much!

  93. L.... ....

This song always reminds me of my dad. His brother was in the Soviet army during the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He was killed in a fight during the animosity in the leading up the the fall of the wall. This just seems to fit so well

  94. J.... D....

    shut up.

  95. f.... ....

if a only son calls someone brother is he still a only son?

  96. a.... ....

    This is an amazing song.
