Reeves, Jim - The Streets Of Laredo Lyrics

As I walked out in the streets of Laredo
As I walked out in Laredo one day
I saw a young cowboy all dressed in white linen
Dressed in white linen as cold as the clay.

So beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly
Play the death march as you carry me along
Take me to the green valley, they'll lay the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong.

Once in a saddle I used to go dashing
Once in a saddle I used to go gay
First to the courthouse and lay down the roses
But I'm shot in the breast and I'm dyin' today.

Bring sixteen tall cowboys to carry my casket
Ten pretty women to sing me a song
Take me to the green valley they'll lay the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong.

Please beat the drum slowly and play the fife lowly
Play the death march as you carry me along
Take me to the green valley, they'll lay the sod o'er me
For I'm a young cowboy and I know I've done wrong...

Back when county and western music
was worth listening was something I loved !!!
So sad to see what it’s become,
for I’m a young cowboy and I know
    I done wrong.

  7. J.... M....

Just love this, takes my back to my living room growing up In the 1970s loved everything cowboy! A period of NOBLE men, how man should be! Devils among yes but Google men had the balls to confront the likes of them poor lost souls! JESUS IS LORD

I'm now 95 -remember Jim in his very early days-The U K missed out when he was going to tour -The B B C Orchestra went on strike because Jim had brought his own band with him - but he refused to have the B B C play for him-He packed up and went over to Ireland =we lost out in the U K -He never made another visit

    c.... ....

Interesting sir. I wonder if there is any recording or footage of this irish concert. I have also heard that Jim refused to let other performes on the opry or the lousiana hayride or somewhere else use Dean Manuel's piano. Nice to meet you sir

    c.... ....

There was one made -l had a copy on an old V H S Tape but sadly for some stupid reaspn l recorded over it-l have many old C D's-pleased to meet you too

  13. M.... K....

Oh, man. Disappointed.  Oh, yeah, I love Jim Reeves and he does this song credit for certain.  But I saw a picture of John Wayne and thought he would be performing.  I really wanted to hear how he would have done this.  I could just hear him with that slow halting voice.

  14. B.... W....

Today's lousy country singers that you hear on the radio need to listen to Jim Reeves.

    B.... W....

What they call country and western music on the radeo is N O T country and western at all. every durn one of them are the same blasted thing, lets get in my truck, get drunk, and F_ _ K, that is NOT country and western at all

    B.... W....

Peggy, listen to some Andrew Combs. He has real talent.

  15. G.... R....

Great song. Jim and Marty Robbins are the two best versions of this song.

    G.... R....

    You are right. 13.2

    G.... R....

Agreed. I think Robbins is a bit better though

    G.... R....

    I prefer Johnny Cash tbh.

    G.... R....

The newer version on American IV.

    G.... R....

You are talking about the two best singers of the last 70 years.

  21. F.... B....

Beautiful. Missed the great Gary Cooper, though.

  22. t.... ....

All my early hero's, sung by one of my favourite singers, back when gay meant happy! Christ times have changed!
    Ted

    t.... ....

@ted12345ish Ye,s in those days one would not have used 'Christ' as an exclamation.

    t.... ....

It would have been CRIKEY also the f---k word was only used as an explecative-very seldom used outside of the factory

    t.... ....

    Gay still means happy.

    t.... ....

@Blahsheep no it does not. The world has ruined the word

    t.... ....

@Sam Anderson fag has also changed too. Things change. Adapt or go in a cave up to you

  23. G.... ....

I grew up listening to this kind of music. In our house it was considered the only country music. While I'm abit more opened minded its a nice walk down memory lane to home. My mom's records are packed safe an in storage so I don't have easy access to them but they'll be there to pass to my son. Long live the cowboy.

  24. M.... G....

I love Jim Reeve's version of this song. Thank you for posting it.

  34. w.... h....

Soft voice combined with powerful bass tones. High class singer. Thanks for bringing this to the encyclopedia of music (Youtube).

  35. D.... B....

this is the best version. I used to sing this to my daughter when she was little to help her sleep xxxx

  36. D.... M....

Pictures with it are great. Jim Reeves voice not suited for this song although I know he was a perfectionist and did it over and over till he was satisfied.

    D.... M....

Just curious. Do you think this song is better suited for Marty Robbins? Jim, Waylon, Don Gibson, and Marty are my favorite singers.

  37. A.... S....

I have a collection of jim reeves on 1970s vinyl , and they are timeless,I still play them (when i,m allowed by herself ) on my 1974 pioneer hi-fi (which is still going strong),and they just don,t seem to age. lets just hope future generations will be able to hear his priceless voice and songs. long live Jimbo.

  42. C.... B....

Hey bud, we still ride our horses in B.C. too!!! Good on you,WE ARE real and we do exist. Some people should check the next piece of meat when they eat it.It did not just arrive in your store. We have to run with the cattle all day and night when they are birthing AND when you are asleep.

  47. J.... H....

    awesome photos

  48. D.... G....

I'm not sure if I like this version or Johnny Cash's best.

  49. J.... ....

Cowboys represent the greatest myth in American history, there wasn't one of them that wouldn't take it up the ass for two bits.

  50. I.... ....

Does anyone remember the C&W favorite about a " lesson from a little bird"?

  51. w.... ....

    Love all those cowboy heros!!

  52. L.... D....

ONE OF MY ALTIME FAVIORTES, TEARS COME ALONG EVERYTIME I HEAR IT.

  53. J.... C....

jIM Reeves perfoms this classic with a voice of ghostly velvet sadness, magical.

  54. U.... ....

I can't think of a Western folk song much sadder than this one. Or a country song. Or any song. (sniff) WAAHHHHH!

  55. h.... ....

    No one better than Jim.

  56. J.... B....

    Well put.

  57. M.... N....

My heart is with the Buffalo Tatanka good to hear you know this too..
    MN

  58. M.... N....

Winter time we sang lots of song my brother Jim was a gifted singer and had a band in Reno for a while. He passed into spirit two years ago and we sang this song for him, The roots of this song are Irish and it is a death march song. Maka Nupa
Nice to know someone respects the Buffalo. MN

  59. M.... N....

How I miss my home in Upper plains of Nevada no land like that any where. Wild horses still ran the hills back in the 50s and 60s so did we. The ranch was called the Gilmore ranch over 1 million acres of just wilderness and freedom. We ran 10 thousand head of herfords the most wildest cattle you ever saw.
Yes there were cowboys real ones. We hired 26 in the round up time and had 16 on the ranch all the time. Maka Nupa

  60. M.... H....

Best version ,by the best country singer EVER ....

  61. o.... ....

There's a place way out beyond time in Wyoming, the partially decayed steer lies there with his face to the sky, the old horse took me there to visit him so he was not alone - we are there and happy and the steer, his spirit? he's with the buffalo.

  62. h.... ....

Doesn't that prove that nothing has changed apart from the fact that Gentleman Jim has a voice and rap is just (c)rap?

  63. T.... ....

3 ppl are as cold as the clay..

  64. C.... D....

I have been a total Jim Reeves fan since I was in the 3rd grade and let's just say that was a few years back, lol and I don't recall this song. So smooth and great. Sad song done wonderfully by the King of Smooth.

  65. Z.... ....

problem nowadays is that cowboys refuse to admit they're wrong

  66. i.... ....

Does nobody posting here realise this is a song about how "terrible and raggedy ass" (thank you, Steve McQueen) the Old West really was?
It's about a life wasted; a young man killed in an act of senseless violence. It might as well be a rap song about some gangsta getting blown away before his twentieth birthday.

  67. R.... D....

What a voice it will never fade

  68. s.... ....

Dear @rockgor, we are still here, we'll never, never die. We just ain't seen from the highway. Tell you the truth, we don't care if we are seen or not. Come to the Texas High Plains or Wyoming, or the Dakotas or Montana during the cold Winter or the hot sun, we are here. Don't look for cowboys in the museums or the LA suburbs, look for us riding our horses or feeding our few cattle...

  69. L.... w....

Amazing find, so rare and so beautiful. he was a true music artist that spoke to the heart of America, a wondeful find and should be a national treasure.

  70. R.... M....

I haven't heard this version before, I love it! thanks

  71. S.... ....

Oh too be born in those long ago days.

  72. C.... T....

@rockgor Hey sometime when you are in the vicinity of southern oklahoma visit the town of Gene Autry. There is a museum there of all Gene Autry memoribilia. He was from there originally. The original town name was Berwyn, in Carter County. It was renamed Gene Autry January 1, 1942. The movie Cowboy Tom Mix was also from Oklahoma. His museum is in Dewey Oklahoma just north of Bartlesville.

  73. L.... S....

@BettyAlexander Have you ever heard Rex Allen Sr do this sing? He has a great version of this song. I used to think it was the best, but after hearing Jim Reeves sing "Streets Of Laredo", I'll have to say that Jim's version at least equals Rex Allen's. Maybe an edge better. Rex Allen Jr also sings a great version of this song also.

  74. B.... A....

Lelboy: I intended to say Marty Robbins (not Mary) the "t" got left off Sorry. I don't know who first sang tis song, but just commented I liked the Marty Robbins version best on it, but Jim Reeves is my favorite singer of all; just not this one.

  75. p.... ....

    wheres Cheyenne... Sugerfoot.... Broco Lane

  76. L.... R....

@BettyAlexander Who is this Mary Robbins character? Never heard of her!

  77. p.... ....

    omg Roy Rogers

  78. S.... ....

I've always loved Jim Reeves' voice. It's like warm honey poured over chocolate. Oldie, but goodie!

  79. R.... D....

I had the pleasure of traveling with Jim Reeves and the Jackson band (not the jackson 5) in 1961 for a week-end in Michigan and you couldn't meet a nicer man. He deserves the name of "Gentleman Jim" and what a wonderful smooooth voice. BTW, Marty Robbins was one of the first to see Jim's plane go down near Nashville and was one of Jim Reeves' best friends.

  80. 1.... ....

Is that Jesse James at 1:06?

  81. J.... ....

Had forgotten how handsome Yul Brenner was.

  82. g.... ....

    great video

  83. a.... ....

this song is one of the easiest to play on the harmonica : harps.com. tabs
    try it?

  84. J.... D....

Streets of Laredo" is a genuine American folk song. It started out as an Irish drover ballad called "Bard of Armaugh".

  85. A.... ....

Not a Marty R. song. It's been around over 100 years in the US & the tune from Ireland is older than that.

  86. B.... A....

Jim Reeves does pretty good. Didn't think he could do a good job on a Mary Robbin's song but what can I say--it's JIM REEVES

  87. A.... ....

I just heard Claude Akin sing this song on the great 60's tv show The Rifleman...wonderful
