Reed, Jerry - Barbara Allen Lyrics

In Scarlet Town where I was born there was a fair maid dwelling
Made every youth cry well a day and her name was Barbara Allen

Twas in the merry month of May when green buds they were swelling
Sweet William on his death bed lay for the love of Barbara Allen

He sent his servant to the town to the place where she was dwelling
Cried master bid you to his his side if your name be Barbara Allen

Slowly slowly she got up slowly she went to nigh him
And when she pulled the curtain back said young man I think you're dying

Oh yes I'm sick I'm very sick and I will be no better
Until I've had the love of one the love of Barbara Allen

Father father go dig my grave dig it deep deep and narrow
Sweet William died for me today I'll die for him tomorrow

They buried her in the old courtyard sweet William's grave was nigh her
And from his heart there grew a rose and from her heart grew a briar

They grew and grew up the courtyard wall till they could grow no higher
Then grew as one to part no more the red red rose and the briar
The red red rose and the briar

I have this 1969 LP. When Barbara Allen came up on my radar and I decided to get the lyrics and add it to my repertoire I did a title search and found there are 476 Barbara Allen videos on You Tube. From Joan Baez to Jo Stafford and everyone in between, but Jerry's version is the one in my memory so its settled.

To me still the very best version of this song ever - thanks a lot for posting!

Yeah...I've been listening and singing this version since I was a young boy. I am pressed to find another version that i like anywhere near as well. In many versions, the balladeer doesn't follow the music in regularity. I think that's why I like this one so much: the music flows and enhances the story, though some might argue that it doesn't tell the whole historic tale.

Also..check out 'Hit and Run', another Jerry Reed classic.

I love this song, the way the music builds with each verse is amazing, and his voice is so beautiful... sends chills up my spine.

Me too! I think there was probably alot of stuff that Reed did that didn't get released. I also wish they'd start by at least releasing every RCA album on cd. Also would like to see b-side stuff like High Rollin' and In Between get released. I've often wondered if he and Waylon did any other songs in 83 when they collaborated on Hold On I'm Comin'.

I agree-re-release the lot.Come to think of it,what about 'Chet Atkins picks on Jerry Reed'?
