I think I first heard this song on Jerry Lewis' Labor Day Telethon when Helen Reddy performed a couple of songs on it. This one and "Mr. Bojangles"

Heard this on the radio in the car with my dad when he picked me up from work. Not at all my normal music genre but this song was amazing enough for me to look it up to put on my Ipod.

On this day in 1975 {August 15th} Helen Reddy was the host on the NBC-TV musical variety late-night program 'The Midnight Special"...
At the time her "Ain't No Way To Treat A Lady"* was at #62 on Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart, a little over seven weeks later it would peak at #8 {for 2 weeks} and it spent 16 weeks on the Top 100...
And on September 26th it peaked at #1 {for 1 week} on Billboard's Adult Contemporary Tracks chart...
On the Canadian RPM Singles chart it peaked at #2 {for 2 weeks} on October 11th, the two songs that kept it out of the top spot were "Third Rate Romance" by the Amazing Rhythm Aces and "I'm Sorry" by John Denver...
While in her native Australia it only reached #94 on the Kent Music chart...
Between 1971 and 1981 she had twenty one songs make the Top 100; six made the Top 10 with half of them reaching #1, "I Am Woman" for 1 week in 1972, "Delta Dawn" for 1 week in 1973, and "Angie Baby" for 1 week in 1974...

As a young kid growing up in the 70s and 80s I never could appreciate the smart lyrics and rich music it accompanied. Now 40 years later I finally can, and this song has held up so well!

It is a wonderful song! I can understand why is not longer played on the radio! Helen Reddy was one of the top singers of the 70 and now is almos forgotten! It is not fair!

@Carlos Jorge Stöckel I agree 100%! Helen had so many big hits AND great records. The 70's are my favorite decade in popular music and she's a huge part of it. This may not have been her biggest hit (#8), but it's one of my 2 faves of hers.

In my humble opinion, Helen had to pay a high tribute in the ultra conservative USA of Reagan; Although she was a talented singer,she fell in disgrace and was simply outcasted!

One of the greatest female voices of the last century. I always thought that. I hope that she understands how good she was.  She really changed the dynamics of men and women.. who cares about her persuasion?.. she was simply a wonderful , wonderful and powerful contemporary singer who  was able to break  though the miasma and earn her rightful place in the world of music. Saw an interview of Helen with Marie Osmond recently that was brilliant. She's back living in the US (her daughter lives in LA) and touring a bit now. She sounds even BETTER NOW than she did then if that's possible. This is my favourite HR record - it just goosebumps from start to finish and isn't that what pop is all about. She's so real and so cool too.

She has a naturally beautiful voice and soul, but I have never heard her voice before on television or on the radio. She has a very simple voice, but it captures you. She doesn't get the credit she deserves.

Zorn Wyche Helen Reddy was on the radio all day and night throughout the 70s and into the 80s. Along with a lot of other awesome singers of awesome music...that are sadly, largely unknown to younger people today through no fault of their own.

If you want to find other gems, just google the top 40 Easy Listening, Rock, Pop, Rhythm and Blues (R&B), Soul, Country & Folk music from the 50s through the early 80s, but especially during the 60s and 70s.

Then systematically go through and look up and listen to the songs one by one, and have a website with the lyrics handy when you do, because that will often transform the song in a good way for too, since the lyrics often had layers of meaning that songs simply do not have today.

This in depth level of personal project would probably take you years to get through...and provide you with a musical background similar to the Baby Boomers (I'm Gen X myself). If you enjoy this then, there are additional awesome songs that never made it to the Top 40 of any genre, but are still leaps and bounds better than anything of any genre today.

Point is, there is a huge catalog of awesome music available to the young people of today, and almost all of it, like this wonderful song, will be guaranteed to be "new to you"...and far better artistically and in every other way, than the musical swill that is being forced on you by the music industry today.

I love this song. Helen's voice is lovely. I recently saw her on youtube singing this and she sounded exactly the same. She still has this wonderful sound and is still a lovely lady. Bravo to Helen.

My 2 favorites were Helen Reddy and Petula Clark. Both have a great voice. When I was stationed overseas in the military I often spent hours off duty listening their records.
