Redding, Otis - Chain Gang Lyrics
[Chorus:]
That's the sound of the men
They are working on the chain gang
That's the sound of the men
They are working on the chain gang
They are working on the chain gang
All day long they work so hard
till the sun's comin' down
workin on the highways and biways
and wearin a frown
I hear them moanin' their lives away
and then you hear somebody say
Hear someone sayin'
whoa I work, work so hard
See my woman, who I love so dear,
but I, I've got to work right here.
[Chorus]
My, my, my, my, I work so hard
Give me water, I'm thirsty
Whoa I, I work so hard
You hear them moanin' their lives away,
and then you hear somebody say
[Chorus 2x]

This man could sing the alphabet and it would sound awesome. I'm so glad...so glad....so glad I had the pleasure of seeing you perform in person. Gone to soon. Love and miss you Mr. Redding. GOD Bless. RIP.
Still the greatest soul singer. And that voice! Listen to the groove on the track! And the brass! Best backup band ever!
That's soul music!
Otis Redding was the 2pac of soul
I love both versions
The G.O.A.T
Das bach no es motzart das sam or otis
for ever !
Otis Reddings is a Ledgend
the King of soul
Keyshisa cole
King of Soul 👑🎤
My name is coy Johnson I grew up with my dad teaching me Otis' Redding songs he loved them and I am thirty two and I think I listen more than he did
found a 'best of otis redding' record for 1Euro in a local secondhand shop. This track has been on repeat for 3 days now. Thanks Otis!
I love the way Otis puts his own swing on it! Sam is good but Otis put a touch on it that no one can touch! Otis was truly the man!
@Aj Dontnow Sam's version was released first. But, I've preferred the Otis version since I was probably 3 years old. haha!
Song is written by Sam Cook in 1960 source: Wikipedia :)
who was first with this song otis redding or sam cooke?
Sam Cooke
Sam's Chain Gang was the Original. Otis version built a place as colorful as that show case city of Ashkhabad Turmenistan. My honest feeling is his version is beyond comparison
I like Sam's better, I guess bc Ive grown so much with it
No doubt they're both great! I guess maybe it's just a personal choice
I think they both took it to different places, I listen to Sam's after a long day at work. This is more of a groove.
So true. Otis was amazing too. Right there with Al Green, Marvin Gaye and David Ruffin.
TheFunkologist better then those guys
@HipHop226 yeah
@elamite66 Because Sam is the greatest male singer ever
I loved Otis but doesn't touch Sam's version I remember when I was a kid of 12 in NY at first you could only hear Otis on the NY black stations not until he was dead and Sitting on the Dock of the Bay was released did he have a big hit on the mainstream Rock'n'Roll stations
I love this song..
