Redbone - Jerico Lyrics

There's a neighbourhood on the edge of Fresno
Down by the old state road and the Suday Farm
The people there live in tents and cardboard lean-tos
The babies ain't got no shoes, that's not funny

Jerico, Jerico, Jerico, Jerico

When I was a boy growin' up in Fresno
The place that I called home was Jerico
My mama cooked with kerosene when she set the table
The babies drank bathed-in water, sometimes Kool-Aid

Jerico, Jerico, Jerico, Jerico

Kids would bust your lip if you wouldn't fight
Runnin' with my friends, beggin' and stealin'
We'd hang out by the Honky-Tonk and roll a wino
The people in the church next door singin' "thank you, Jesus"

Jerico, Jerico, Jerico, Jerico

Wee Willie Young taught me to play the guitar
We used to play the blues 'til his life went bad
I started playin' in bars when I was fifteen
My younger brother, Pat, right there with me

Jerico, Jerico, Jerico, Jerico

You think you're kinda rocky if you're Jerico
They are livin' in a hole down in Jerico
Killin' in the valley down in Jerico
All the pigs they're stickin' down in Jerico
And all the rootin', pickin' down in Jerico
And your mama and your papa down in Jerico
And you're here understandin' Jerico
Hippin' and stickin' down in Jerico
An' cookin' and a-kickin' down in Jerico
Cookin' in a chippy down in Jerico
When it was polk and wheat down in Jerico
And all the folk visit the Pen down in Jerico
It was funky as a doggie down in Jerico

I come from a huge family and my oldest siblings and parents were born in Maniwakie Québec
Of course more than half the people are natives !!
I was born in Ottawa Canada so why do I feel I have so much connection with the native ??

Have loved this Band from the first record. Lolly was so handsome! First Native American group to make it big. Then there was the Great Jessie Ed Davis, RIP! What a fantastic guitar player. Drugs ruined him.

I knew this Mexican-American friend who I remember telling me he had gone to school with Pat and Lolly at Edison High. Back then the school was largely African-American. He told me, "Shit, those guys aren't anymore indian than I am."
But, if they wanted to identify as Native-American that's up to them, I feel.

Esta canción es fantástica. ¡¡Guau!!

    Bernie 10 i agree with you 100% 🇵🇷

@ John McCarroll: But they DO belong regardless of being Native/ Indigenous; and it's precisely BECAUSE they are Native/Indigenous that they aren't; you have to address racism; can't ignore it! They belong in RnR Hall of Fame based on their first album alone, much less their first five albums. We are NOT "all Americans;" we have NOT all shared the same lived reality. Native/ Indigenous peoples, Mexicans, African people did not come to Turtle Island to rape, steal, loot, plunder, and commit genocide; that was #wewhitepeople. So it DOES matter that a band who well should have been in the RnR Hall of Fame decades ago still is not, and that that band is Native/ Indigenous. #wewhitepeople have set the terms, stolen everything, and now want to call others "racist" for addressing racism? GTFOH w/ that bullshit. This band had their records banned, John McCarroll, for having the balls to write songs about the 1970 Occupation of Alcatraz Island by the Indians of All Tribes~ while it was happening mind you, (the song "Alcatraz" from their album "Potlatch") and for STILL writing about the liberation struggles of Native/ Indigenous peoples; writing in 1973 about the American Indian Movement's Occupation of Wounded Knee (the song "We Were All Wounded at Wounded Knee") and again the U.S. banning their records. So the band toured Europe and had success their before returning to the U.S. and releasing a hit #wewhitepeople could deal with: "Come and Get Your Love," AFTER five albums of some of the most kick-ass, badass, Cajun funk, Swamp-rock, jazz/ rock etc. you've ever heard in your life. But see, you don't want to know about that; you just want to ignore history so you can "feel good" about yourself. GTFOH John "I want to erase history that makes me uncomfortable" McCarroll. kthnxbye

    B.... 1....

Furthermore @ John McCarroll: this so-called "PC 'nonsense'" will stop when ALL LANDS are returned to the Native/ Indigenous peoples and reparations paid for centuries of #wewhitepeople and the United Snakes gov. committing genocide against Native / Indigenous peoples; it's not "PC nonsense" to address injustice and to demand justice; it's called integrity and balls. It's white nationalist nonsense to act like everything is just fine when it is not. THAT's pusillanimity. What YOU"RE doing.
