Reckless Kelly - 1952 Vincent Black Lightning Lyrics

Oh says Red Molly to James "That's a fine motorbike.
A girl could feel special on any such like"
Says James to Red Molly "My hat's off to you
It's a Vincent Black Lightning, 1952.
And I've seen you at the corners and cafes it seems
Red hair and black leather, my favourite colour scheme"
And he pulled her on behind and down to Boxhill they did ride
Oh says James to Red Molly "Here's a ring for your right hand
But I'll tell you in earnest I'm a dangerous man.
For I've fought with the law since I was seventeen,
I robbed many a man to get my Vincent machine.
Now I'm 21 years, I might make 22
And I don't mind dying, but for the love of you.
And if fate should break my stride
Then I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

"Come down, come down, Red Molly" called Sergeant McRae
"For they've taken young James Adie for armed robbery.
Shotgun blast hit his chest, left nothing inside.
Oh come down, Red Molly to his dying bedside"
When she came to the hospital, there wasn't much left
He was running out of road, he was running out of breath
But he smiled to see her cry
He said "I'll give you my Vincent to ride"

Says James "In my opinion, there's nothing in this world
Beats a 52 Vincent and a red headed girl.
Now Nortons and Indians and Greeves won't do,
Ah, they don't have a soul like a Vincent 52"
Oh he reached for her hand and he slipped her the keys
Said "I've got no further use for these.
I see angels on Ariels in leather and chrome,
Swooping down from heaven to carry me home"
And he gave her one last kiss and died
And he gave her his Vincent to ride.

Reckless Kelly 1952 Vincent Black Lightning Comments

  2. Mike Marinacci

Ah, the *Mounted Hard Man* -- an archetype that's been setting female hearts aflutter ever since the first horsemen stormed out of Central Asia 10,000-odd years ago. The image just took on new power with the invention of the motorcycle. This is the best cover of the Richard Thompson song I've yet heard.

  3. Amanda Quintal

I saw this live at Helix, OR summer of 2019 and it moved my soul; I haven't got it out of my mind since.

  4. Amanda Quintal

I want to download this to my phone in the worst way, but I can't find this version anywhere 😭

  5. Keith Hart

only 31 made 19 still exist worth 1,000,000 bucks each

  6. Golden Child

    Compare - Sean Rowe's version

  7. skeets

OK I listened to it one time, wont bother again

  8. evan baugh

I grew up with a father born in 45 and built and raced bikes and cars. This song is my favorite song and they give such a good rendition. I cant wait till they come back to north florida, dying to see them live

  9. J -Bar

  10. Peter Simonson

    This version is good too.

  11. TMats100

Reckless Kelly: When are you going to record this one?

  12. jimmy fryer

This is by far the best cover of this song I've heard. Had to miss them live a couple weeks ago, do hope they come back to east central Illinois

  13. Ant Rissik

Sean Rowe - no contest..... all credit to Richard Thompson ;-)

    Phil Cross

Totally agree - Sean Rowe's version is so powerful

  14. Steve Graham

50 years in Idaho. David is the best. Idaho forever.

  15. J W

    Sure miss David Abeyta

  16. Laurent Delacroix

This lacks the sense of urgency and impending doom that this song requires. My opinion.

  17. moecurlythanu

Eh. This ain't it. Search the track title with Richard Thompson to hear it as it should be heard, with amazing guitar playing. I'm not saying these guys suck, but if this is your first exposure, you need to check out RT.

  18. Steve Graham

    David we will miss you.

  19. Jon Chaney

Awesome! How fortunate you are to have legends on your program like these gentlemen.

  20. Ned Kline

i should have said these guys are fantastic

  21. Ned Kline

this guy is fantastic, i like the first one he did , it is rk vbl live. both versions are killers , great guitar and fiddle and harmony. also check out dell mc cory , blue grass style, his high tenor is worth a listen.

  22. Factory Bear

Grandpa had a Vincent Black Shadow after the war. He put a sidecar on it so as to transport my grandma and my mom whilst a child. He then died of lung cancer in 1964 while mom was 9 and grandma 33. Grandma didn't know shit about bikes after he died and sold it for cheap. Poor girl. When I first saw the pics as a teenager, and figured out what I was looking at, I cried.

  23. Scott Sumner

Sorry for those who don’t know what happens here.

  24. Rolly Polly

There’s two kids who do the best version I’ve ever heard of this...

  25. Randall Weaver

Really give it all ya got Hathee Bros. really like being able too understand the singers words...with al;l the r&r in that hillbilly sound...carry on

  26. Tom Seering

In my opion Del Mccoury does this song the best. But that was really good.great job

    Joshua Bunkers

I don't think anything could ever top Sean Rowe's cover of this song.

    Scott Razor

Tom Seering You’re out of your mind, just liked to McCoury, this destroys it.

    Vance Overstreet

Red Molly does a good version but Del Mcoury is best Reckless Kelly is FROSTY

    Tom Seering

Yea ur right but I do like sean rowe version

  27. Rolly Polly

WOW that first three part harmony had me SOLD....send it boys!

  28. Tim Kreitz Adventures

They've been doing this song forever, and it never fails to please the crowd. Leave it to Reckless Kelly to take a uniquely British song about a uniquely British bike and make it into something uniquely Red Dirt. Hats off, boys.

  29. Joejitsuway

Good cover. I still think Robert Earl Keen has the best cover though.

  30. Carbon Crank

This would be just great as an open mic night version

  31. mikesterp

I could listen to this a hundred times and still play it again.

  32. materialclassified *

Sean Rowe does a good rendition ..

  33. jackie newton

This is Brilliant! I have heard a few covers of this and this is the BEST

  34. Howard McKay

I have recorded this on Youtube as "Norton Commando 1972", with apology to RT.

  35. Kassie Dolan

What music is supposed to be! Great song by a Great band! Never stop boys!

  36. Tele Rooo

Del McCoury Band's "Vincent Black Lightning

  37. Beth Steele

I love this version .... a lot of the others are way to bluegrass for my liking. The Reckless Kelly boys rock this song. And i like this better than the Richard Thompson version.

  38. A knife a fork a bottle and a cork.

    Very good.
    But RT is better.

  39. Ed Decker

the best version of a great tune

  40. Nancy H

Reckless Kelly is very underrated. Nice smooth voice, easy to listen to.

  41. Tony Barlow

Ha! I was in the audience during this performance. Cain’s Ballroom, Tulsa OK

    Laurent Delacroix

    America's best venue

did it sound as good on the floor as it does cherry-picked off the board?

  42. fowlesco1

    What a fabulous band

  43. Tom Wolfe

Love it. Great interpretation. To the R Thompson fans who can't see anything to like in an RT cover -- get over it, I'll bet Richard wouldn't be as provincial as you

  44. Keith and Lee Ann Sullivan

    Great arrangement and performance ....

  45. Harley Hauldren

Richard Thompson wrote the song, but these boys owned it tonight

  46. Rick Bullock

    Great Richard Thomas song.👍

    Rick Bullock Thompson, not Thomas....

  47. Yazgersfarm

Richard Thompson would be happy with this rendition ---

  48. Gregory Jackson

Not bad Del Mcoury's version is way better. Check out Jeff Langs version also. But nothing beats the original Richard Thompson! 😎

    Robert Lee Camp

I like this version more than Del's. It is closer to Richard's vocally. And instrumentally. Nice!

    Jared Megan Peterson

    Sean Rowe still my favorite.

  49. Steven Dyer

Hard to top an acoustic Richard Thompson

    John Shotwell

Thompson is one of the greatest pickers ever, and he has his unique style, just amazing!

  50. Clinton

    17 people are fucking retarded.

  51. Steve Pierce Simeone

AWESOME ! beautiful, Love your music , Skippers Tampa FL. 2000 ?

  52. ebt182

    The best, never gets old

  53. Keith Hart

Such poor guitar compared to Richard Thompson his is the best

Keith Hart I don't know that I'd call it poor. They have their own style.

    Scott Saathoff

David Abeyta is a universe away poor on the guitar. Richard Thompson's acoustic work is stunning, no question, but Abeyta does just fine, he's uber talented.

    Spades Great

There is always someone better at everything. This Is great stuff, the whole band. Your comment was good but I have read better. You dig?

    Richard Tuck

Lol why are you comparing them they play it differently, Mark knopfler plays better than Thompson so what

  54. Keith Hart

No one can play this as good as Richard Thompson the master

    Richard Tuck

That's just a matter of opinion, nobody's right and nobody's wrong just different tastes, I prefer this over the original

  55. River Road OliveOil

Here's to being the Redheaded girl & the red Dirt roads... ours is kinda a black dirt road, but still the same! Worked a few gigs at Cains back in the 80's love a great ole music hall!

  56. kopperhed

nothing like a lil Amazing Grace on the intro......

  57. Mike Ward

Amazing version of an incredible song. Love the vocals and drums.

  58. Havoc Man

.....still searching YT for a cover that can even come close to Sean Rowe's

    This aint it

These guys are good, but Rowe crushes this tune like no other

    Daniel Wolfe

Havoc Man wasn't impressed by Sean Rowe's. Love this version. All preference I suppose.

styles & opinions vary........ bet you'll see more chicks dancin' to this one.

    Daniel Wolfe

    kopperhed hahaha perfect 👌🏻

Gotta get to a Reckless show mate, be there, feel it, breathe it

  59. Eli Sancere

Holy shit ! I smell a revile . This is the shit

  60. Toni Francis

Hey, Red Dirt Nation, give the credit to Richard Thompson who wrote the song!

    Michael Condran

Totally right - this cover is ok, though nothing like the RT original. IMHO.

    Gregor Miller

@Michael Condran Sean Rowe gives this song justice in my opinion, take a listen if ya haven't already:)

    Beth Steele

I like this Reckless Kelly version more than the original Richard Thompson version. Sorry.

    martin sanders

@Gregor Miller Have to echo this comment about Sean Rowe's cover of this song, as it leaves reasonable versions, such as this, in the shadows. Really worth catching up with.

  61. Mike Snyder

true c/w. not that Nashville BS

  62. djbadlt

Ten people got robbed to pay for James' Vincent

    1-Shot slinger

He robbed my Harley Sportster money from me ! I still miss him though !

  63. Jeremy f

Love these guys! In fact wearing their t-shirt now. It cries FREEDOM!! Sean Rowe does an at least equally awesome version. Check it out!

  64. Howlin' Donster

    A timeless tune.....

  65. Tom Sexton

I have been encased by this song and RK's versions of it since the first time I heard it . Now a huge RK fan and Texas Red Dirt. Nn'duh- folks who don't know about Red Dirt, welp, they don't.

  66. BR 549

seen these guys 11 years ago at a little seafood joint that had a stage outside off Nebraska Ave in Tampa FL. Man, we got hammered drunk and they kicked ass!

    Harold Delk

    Skipper’s Smokehouse?

Funny Seeing this comment here as I don’t live too far from there 😆. YouTube is a small world it seems.

  67. Garrett Scroggs

These guys are incredible. Have great original material and knock every cover they do out of the park!

  68. Loading-Stuff

    Wonderfull video thanks

  69. Kalamity Fame

Damn Cal Ford, Thompson and all the others....

  70. Roger MacDanold

Best rendition I've heard. Guy's got a great voice. Throws that gravel in like Mickey Newbury could and often did do.

    Gary Wiedeman

I kind of like this guys voice too, but he is no Mickey Newbury.

    Donald Shipman

Check out Sean Rowe's version... Unbelievable

  71. idridcole

Goddamnit these boys get after it, right? Not many get it. No one knows, it seems, but we all meet at the shows...

    That Underground Studio Channel

idridcole Yes! Wasn't sure if that was the same fiddler until they went close up, is. Jammed with him in the parking lot of a club called the Varsity in busted flat Baton Rouge, La. right beside their bus.

    Frank Lyons

No need to damn God about it

    Shane Becker

Best damn band that nobody have ever heard of. Incredible musicians and vocalists.....

    Z. S. N.

Awesome dude. Here's to seeing you at my next shindig.

    Z. S. N.

    I mean goddamn.

  72. admiralcatfish

Every bit as good as the original.

    Graham Cox

    bradj568 I don't think so.

    Damian Thielemier

Better, IMHO. This version has David Abeyta, Joe Miller, Jay Nazziola, Willy Braun, and my personal favorite, Cody Braun.

    Biomed Aggie

Much better than the original! They’ve helped this song reach it’s full potential.

    Gregor Miller

@Biomed Aggie please check out Sean Rowe's version if ya haven't already:)

    Samantha Williams

@Biomed Aggie Agreed; much more energy and life (despite the irony of the song ending in a death), and having multiple singers gives it a fuller, richer sound that a soloist just can't bring to bear.

  73. Anders Blomster

    "I luv it!"

  74. jeebiss jeebiss

    luv the arrangement. well done.

  75. Marc Miner

Hey, amazing vid! I'm pretty sure you will love my video, so check it out and leave a comment! Have a great day! Love, Marc

  76. J&C Music

    Bad ass song!

  77. Conscious-Type Person

Around 5:30 there are shades of Moe.'s "Rebubula." I wonder if that was intentional.

  78. sberrens

Seeing them 8/6 @ Nashville North,  Idaho Stateline!

  79. jlaleknas

    This is fucking amazing.

  80. skycaptain mungo

I'm pretty shore my mum's cousin did this

    Garrett Tacha

    +Red Dirt Nation
Definitely. I finally got to see the Motorcars and Reckless just a couple months ago. They definitely know how to put on a show.

    skycaptain mungo

@Garrett Tacha is actually in the band

    Garrett Tacha

    +Rachael Long
    Nice! Which one??

    Christophe Carpentier

Well if you're so shore, sandy, you must be a beach.

  81. Taco Gillespie

Always been a damn good band. Used to go see them back in 1985-86 in St Louis.

    Garrett Tacha

    +Taco Gillespie
This band didn't form until 1997....

    Rory Macdonald

Saw them as kids in Challis Idaho in early 80's

The Braun bros are from Stanley, ID, where they performed as the Braun Brothers in the '70s and '80s. It's difficult to pin down whether Reckless Kelley was formed in Idaho or in Bend, OR. Whichever it was, Reckless Kelley was formed before they moved to Austin in October 1996. Or was it 1997? They have an unfortunate way of giving more than one answer to the same question.
