Ray Stevens - Funny Man Lyrics

Look-a there, there he goes
Ha, there goes the funny man
The life of the party, that's me

And they'd never guess
That I had a care
They'd be amazed to see me cry
When the party's through
Cry over you

Talk loud, funny man
In the crowd, funny man
You're in rare form today

Leave em' laughing as you walk away, yeah, yeah
But they wouldn't laugh
If they only knew that I'll go home alone
To cry, cry the whole night through
Cry over you

And who's to know that this clever clown
Is really the fool of a town?
Yes, who's to know the girl I loved
Laughed when she turned me down?

So, tell a joke, funny man
Be gay, funny man
Don't give yourself away, funny man
Pretend you didn't love her anyway

Act as though nothin's wrong
Wear good smile to go alone
Then cry, cry the whole night through
'Cause there's nothin' you can do

Ray Stevens Funny Man Comments
  1. J.... A....

As funny as ran Stevens was this song shows how serious he could be in his songs.

  2. C.... r....

Makes Me think about Robin Williams 😓

  3. M.... C....

At 15, on AM radio, for me this was an opera.

  4. g.... ....

ZERO thumbs down!!   Right on!!! Ray Stevens' BEST!

  5. J.... 7....

I've wondered for years if this is autobiographical of Ray. ???

  6. S.... J....

I could relate to this song, because I was the funny man. I always return to this one, such a beautiful gem

  7. g.... ....

    Best part=1:40 and after

  8. C.... L....

is this a fast version? the one i got is slower version

    C.... L....

+Chevy Levy you have the 1968 re-recorded version. this 1963 version is the best, although the pitch on this is a little bit fast(I have this 45)

  9. D.... B....

I have this on a 45 I've owned since 1963. The flip-side is another great song by Ray, Just One Of Life's Little Tragedies. I met Ray one time at a recording session in Nashville. One of Ray's first records was Sargent Preston of the Yukon. If you're a Baby Boomer you'll remember the TV program, Sargent Preston.

    what a gem

  11. R.... R....

I always found this song moving and profound. Ray Stevens is a lot more than a novelty singer. I have this song on two albums(both bought in 1970).

So memories of my childhood. Ray Stevens was the epitome of talent.

    t.... k....

    Still is :)

  13. D.... P....

When I was a kid this song always made me cry.

This is my all time favorite Ray Stevens song....ever! So deep with meaning & feeling...it tells the flip side of being a "funny man" or comedian. Very touching song! Don't get me wrong, I love his comic songs & his "Everything Is Beautiful" is great....but this song is the heart of the man. I discovered it in the mid 60"s and it has been on my favorites playlist ever since.

  15. C.... ....

    Have you even heard it?

  16. t.... ....

Very likely, and I'm not saying this is a bad song. I am a fan of Ray Stevens, regardless. I am a fan of Randy Travis as well, and one of his earliest albums (under another name) doesn't sound like him either, it could be the recording conditions from that era, I don't know. Basically, I'm just saying that while it doesn't sound like the Ray Stevens I'm most familiar with, I do believe it is him, and think it's a good song. :) Peace

  17. C.... ....

The cover version by Ross D. Wylie absolutely kills this one!

  18. H.... A....

I melt they should put this album on itunes.

  19. H.... A....

  21. S.... ....

I had this album in 1963. Loved it, forgot about, it, loved to hear it again. Thanks!

  22. t.... ....

I fully believe that this is Ray Stevens, but I have to say, it doesn't sound like him! :) Seems to be too high pitched, but again, I do believe it's him. Thanks for posting this
